There Have Been 301 Players That Played For Both Dodgers and Giants

Brett Butler

Now that Sergo Romo is officially a Dodger (the deal has yet to be announced by the club, so not officially official) we can finally stop talking about him until the season starts. I feel like we’ve been talking about Romo so much around here of late that we should change the name of the site to SergioRomorepport. Romo now joins a long list of former Giants who ended up playing for the Dodgers, and vice versa.

That got me thinking. There have been a lot of players who have played on both sides of the rivalry. I’ve always wondered exactly how many, so I looked it up. There have been 225 position players to play for the Dodgers and Giants, and 79 pitchers to take the mound for both clubs. This long list dates all the way back to the beginning of the century and into the late 1800’s. It’s quite an extensive list. Check it out for yourself.

Oyster Burns was one of the first players to don both uniforms. Burns played for the Dodgers from 1888-1895, and then played a partial season for the Giants in 1895. Back in those days the Dodgers weren’t called the Dodgers. They were the Brooklyn Bridegrooms. The grizzled ball player was an outfielder, but originally began his professional career as a pitcher.

Burns was one of the better hitters for the Bridegrooms and the National League back in those days. Burns led the NL in home runs and runs batted in during the 1890 season. He batted .355 in 1894 for the bridegrooms. He was also known as a loudmouth and troublemaker during his playing days. He once shanked a teammate with a penknife after discovering he had fallen asleep in center field during a double-header. He only played 33 games for the Giants in 1895, and batted .307.

John Montgomery Ward was actually the first player to play for both clubs. He played for and managed the Brooklyn Bridegrooms from 1891-1892, but he also played for the Giants from 1883-1889, and then again from 1893-1894. Let’s not forget about infielder Jimmy Knowles who played 46 games for the Dodgers in 1884, and then played 16 games for the Giants in 1892.

One of my favorite Dodgers who came from San Francisco was center fielder Brett Butler. The career lead-off hitter was a masterful bunter and one of the best base stealers of that time. As a matter of fact Butler finished with 147 career bunt hits, and stole 558 bases. He was caught just 257 times.

Butler played with the Giants from 1988-1990, before signing with the Dodgers as a free agent in 1991. Butler played with the Dodgers from 1991-1997 except for the 90 games he played with the Mets in 1995 when the club mistakenly traded him. Butler was a career .290 hitter and a terrific center fielder. If you remember he ended up getting throat cancer and eventually retired soon after ending a 17-year major league career.

Former Dodger outfielder and current Washington manager Dusty Baker played the most games for the Dodgers of any of these players. Baker played in 1,117 games for the Dodgers from 1976-1983 and then played 100 games for the Giants in 1984. Other notable players include, my beloved Orel Hershiser who played for the Giants for just one season in 1998 (we forgive you Orel), Daryl Strawberry, Brian Wilson, Manny Mota, and Derrel Thomas.

Jeff Kent played in 521 games for the Dodgers hitting 75 home runs and played in 900 games for the Giants slugging 175 home runs for the pumpkin colored foes. Duke Snider played one season for the Giants in 1964 after hitting 389 home runs for the Dodgers from 1947-1962 during his illustrious career.

Juan Marichal pitched in two games for the Dodgers in 1975 after winning 258 games for the Giants from 1960-1973. Only 3 pitchers appeared in over 100 games for both sides. Freddie Fitzsimmons, Guillermo Mota, and Matt Herges were the three hurlers who accomplished the feat. Interestingly, John Ward, Brett Butler, and Bill Dahlen were the only three players to steal 100 or more bases for both sides. Sergio Romo becomes the 80th pitcher to toss for both clubs.

  1. I actually did not realize there were that many. But some who came here from SF, or from NY when the team was in Brooklyn were hated. Maglie for one was totally hated by the borough of Brooklyn. He had quite a few run in’s with Carl Furillo. Marichal was vilified and most Dodger fan’s hated his guts. We all know why. Kent was not well liked, and neither was Dick Dietz. But they played in the blue. Candy Maldonado was traded to the Giants, a move that worked out pretty well for them. Candy was a decent player. Snider went to the Giants from the Mets, who I believe and always have, did that just to snub their nose at LA. I saw Duke hit a HR at Dodger Stadium off a guy who went to my high school. Joe Moeller.

  2. Of course, two all-time Brooklyn Dodger greats refused to play for the Giants. Jackie retired after being traded by O’Malley, and Dolph Camilli refused to report, going back to the minors rather than play for the hated ones.

    1. Yes, I remember that well. Duke really had no choice and it always irked me that Bavasi traded him basically for roster fodder. The reality and the story goes that Duke pissed Alston off during that 62 playoff disaster with the Giants. He berated Alston because he thought he made a dumb move bringing in Williams. Big D told Walt he could pitch but Alston said he was saving Drysdale for the opening game of the Series. If you remember, Koufax was down for the year with a circulation problem in his finger. Alston forgot, you have to get there first. We all know Williams gave up 4 runs and blew a 4-2 lead in the 9th. Duke went to the Mets and then retired after the 1964 season. Always thought he would have hit more HR’s had the Dodgers pulled the RF fence at the coliseum in a little. I saw him hit a lot of balls to the warning track there.

  3. Great story. Brett Butler was also one of my favorites.

How about managers? I know Durocher managed both teams, not sure about anyone else.

      1. Scott did a lot of research to come up with that. Casey Stengel manged the Dodgers and the Mets, but never the Giants and the answer is……John Montgomery Ward. Managed both teams in the 1800’s he and Durocher are it.

  4. All I can say is, if Romo does pitch well for us, it is always sweeter, if we can use a former Giant, against the Giants, especially in AT&T park.

And this isn’t a bad deal, even if Romo doesn’t work out.

Like Bluto, and most baseball people say, a one year contract, is never a bad contract.

And a one year, 3 million dollar deal, is a pretty good deal, in baseball today.

Especially after what we paid Brian Wilson, for the second year, of his contract.

And I am sure Romo will have a chip on his shoulder, when he pitches against the Giants, this year.

And at least this signing won’t make us have to depend on Baez, or Hatcher, to get us to Kenley.

And it will be fun to watch Romo’s family, in Dodger stadium, finally get to see there son pitch, for the team, they love.

  5. Thanks Scott – this (long) list was a nice find! I really enjoyed Brett Butler’s time as a Dodger too. A classic lead off hitter and center fielder.

I did not like Kent much. I thought he was just surly and not much of a motivator.

A few more names: Eric Davis and Daryl Strawberry. And David Roberts!

  6. Bum

I guess it isn’t just you and I, that think Stewart, is a keeper.

They had a article on him, in Fangraphs today.

It is called, Meet the Dodger’s right handed, Skyrocket.

    1. Liked that article.

      Spin rate. Exit velocity.

Those seem to be key metrics to Honeycutt and the staff. Hill also mentioned them prominently in a recent interview.

  7. Yes MJ, that was a good article. The author thinks a lot of Stewart. Hope they are right. He has three good pitches and good command. He does a good job of missing bats. The farm system has been producing. Pederson, Seager, And Urias. We may see Bellinger and Stewart soon.

    1. Idahoal

And that fact he doesn’t have a lot of miles on his arm, makes it even better.

He sure looked good, against the Cubs last year.

    2. I like Brock’s demeanor. He just seems like he’s buckling down and working. He’ll be a good innings eater for us once we get rid of the deadweight “bridge” contracts. This generation’s Tim Belcher I hope.

      1. YF

I just read an article about Kazmir, earlier today.

And Kazmir said he is feeling healthy, and he wants to prove his worth, and be at the top, of the pitching rotation.

I will believe it when I see it.

Kazmir was complaining, that he wanted to be on another team.

And after reading that, I really felt even more negative, about him.

        1. The story today said he wanted to be in LA. It is good when a player has a chip on his shoulder and the Dodgers have a few of those, Puig, Kazmir, Ethier, and Hernandez. I bet SVS is raring to go too.

          1. Michael

Yes Kazmir apparently said that last year, when he was out.

I am willing to give Puig chance, and see if he can make me, a believer again.

And Scott is due, to have a healthy productive, season.

            And I never under estimate,
            Ethier.

It is a fact that we hit better against lefties in 2015, and we still almost have all, of those same players, this year.

I wouldn’t want to be Roberts, with all the decisions he is going to have to make, with all of the depth in the starting pitching, as well as the depth, in the outfield.

  8. If you you start from 1900 and assume 30 different players per team per year then it’s
    301/(30x117x2) = 4%.

But we known it’s off because we have to go earlier than 1900 to include Oyster and Wee Willie. And 30 players per season is too small a # (particularly with FAZ’s penchant for having spectacular # of relief pitchers).

So maybe it’s more like 1% of all the players who played for one team actually played for both teams. Pretty exclusive club. Get booed by both teams’ fans.

  9. There’s only one Dodger that I ever rooted for while he was in a Vagiant uniform and that was my man Reggie Smith who was by far the best hitter in those 70’s lineups. The man had an over 1000+ OPS season for the Dodgers one season.
