More Annoying Injuries For The Dodgers

Brett Anderson

This has been a miserable spring for the Dodgers, and it keeps getting worse. The reason for the misery has been a slew of injuries. Now the Dodgers have three more injured players to add to the growing list. The severity of these injuries is yet to be determined.

Outfielder Yasiel Puig is reported to have left hamstring tightness and was a late scratch from Saturday’s game against the White Sox. Apparently Puig felt the tightness on Friday night. The club feels the injury is not serious and Puig wanted to play. However the club felt it would be better to be cautious and decided to sit him. The club said Puig didn’t feel the tightness until he woke up on Saturday. He was removed from Friday’s game accompanied by a trainer. The club stated that he was removed from Friday’s game because he would “double back” for the day game. Whatever that means. We know the truth. He’s injured, and naturally the Dodgers didn’t want to announce it because they know everyone would freak out.

The reason for the freak out is understandable. Nobody on the club can stay healthy. I wish I could explain this, or find a reason for it. I can’t. I guess it’s just one of those things. The injuries just keep piling up every day. New injuries are reported almost daily. Reliever Yimi Garcia has a sore knee.

I guess he threw a bullpen session and reported no pain. That’s a good sign; however he is behind and probably hasn’t built up enough arm strength to open the season. My guess is he starts the year on the disabled list.

Scott Kazmir has an injury too. He felt some kind of abdominal pull during this afternoon’s game against the Mariners. He was supposed to throw five innings, but was removed after four frames. Kazmir insisted to the media and to the club that he is healthy. The club said he was removed early as a precaution. Who knows?

Here is a list of all the Dodgers who are injured.

Hyun-jin Ryu (Shoulder)

Brett Anderson (always hurt)

Brandon McCarthy (Tommy John)

Howie Kendrick (calf tightness)

Corey Seager (Knee)

Andre Ethier (fracutred tibia)

Brandon Beachy (tendinitis)

Scott Kazmir (maybe)

Yimi Garcia (knee)

Mike Bolsinger (oblique)

Yasmani Grandal (Forearm)

Alexander Guerrero (Knee)

Kike Hernandez (Hip)

Welp that’s everyone.

It’s official. The entire team is injured. My best guess is most of the roster will be on the disabled list by next week. I guess we’ll just have to see how all of these injuries play out. Nothing new for the Dodgers. Every year more than half of the roster is on the disabled list at some point. It’s rare that it’s this early.

Fortunately the Dodgers have great depth. The tough part is no team can perform well with this many injuries. At least I don’t think so. This is quite a test for the Dodgers before the season even begins, and presents some tough decisions about how to build the roster. Regardless, this spring training has certainly sucked. Thankfully opening day is close.

  1. Enrique Hernandez (bruised hip) hasn’t played in 3 days & Alexander Guerrero (sore knee) hasn’t played in five days

  2. Maybe in the turnover of the trainers, there was a gap in time, where on one was really working with the players, to get them ready for the season.

And many players came in to spring training, more raw then normally.

    1. I have no real idea how our injury rate compares to the league average. It just feels like we have more. And as long as we do the idea of depth is an illusion. Every organization has the same number of players as we do. Are ours better? Who knows. I guess we’ll see.

      1. Badger, for the life of me, I cannot recall any other ST or even regular season that has gone like this year so far in 2016. The saving grace is it’s still march but time is running out.

  3. And the injuries just go on and on and on and on and on. Who’s next?????????????????
    but this says it all—-

    1. I don’t think it’s outside reasonable parameters to make a connection between signing older guys, some with injury history, and injuries. We deal in high risk players. I’m thinking, hoping really, that this trend is temporary until FAZ have in place the roster they really want. I believe they will eventually balance youth with experience, but experience means little if the guys can’t play. That’s why I believe they aren’t really targeting this year.

I don’t know I see the depth some do. As Rick pointed out a few days ago, an abundance of fragile players isn’t depth, it’s a problem. That’s why I’ve said since last July – let’s go ahead and start the youth movement. Heck, trade Kershaw to Texas now for their top 5 prospects. Shed some salary, get younger and more interesting.

  4. These are Scott Van Slyke’s numbers so far in ST;
We are talking BA, Slug. OBP, and OPS
    421 .511 .763 1.274
Now is there anyone here still feel he should be platooned just because we are stuck with Crawford and his $$$$$$$$$$? or maybe SVS has EARNED THE LF STARTING JOB OUTRIGHT AT LEAST UNTIL ETHIER RETURNS
