It All Began With a Simple Twitter Poll

There are almost as many ways to watch our favorite team as there are fans. Some of us catch the game at the local sportsbar, some on the widescreen at home with family and friends. Some of us watch on our phones while at work, while others are forced to watch pirate streams on the internet because the Dodgers aren’t available on home television to about 50% of the LA market.

And then you have the folks who watch the games while interacting with fellow Dodgers fans on Twitter, some of whom are tweeting live from Dodger Stadium! Scott (@ladodgerreport) and I (@omsports42) often join that crowd. It’s fun and interactive and a great way to make new friends who are fellow fans of the boys in blue.

Joe Davis has inherited Vin Scully’s seat as the primary Dodgers television voice, and Orel Hershiser gets the lion’s share of time in the broadcast booth as Joe’s color man. Occasionally Nomar Garciaparra will sit in when Orel is away. That happened during last night’s game against the Rockies, and I found myself favoring Nomar’s down-to-earth sincerity over Orel’s constant towing of the company line.

That led me to create a quick 24-hour Twitter poll which asked the question:

Would you rather have a beer with Orel Hershiser or Nomar Garciaparra?

Folks enjoyed the question and that sparked responses with suggestions for drinks one might want to share with the other Dodgers announcers. Here are a few:

@peelerjim thought Orel might prefer wine.

Tequila shooters with Joe Davis came from @GJOH29

Tequila was also suggested by @mikearmenta1 for sharing with Fernando Valenzuela, who is in the Dodgers’ Spanish broadcast booth.

Vin Scully calls for a bit of class and champagne, so mamosas were suggested for good time with him.

We thought Dieter Rhuele might be a vaping kind of guy, and Tommy Lasorda might be favoring Ensure lately.

I thought “The skipper”, Kevin Kennedy, would be the kind of guy to sit with and break out a premium single malt scotch.

It was all in good fun and the kind of thing to lightly discuss among the Twitter bunch while your team is steamrolling over every opponent in sight.

If you’re wondering about that poll, as of 5 pm PST, there are just four hours remaining, and Nomar is currently ahead with 64% of the vote.

I was born in the shadow of Dodger Stadium and immediately drenched in Dodger Blue. Chavez Ravine is my baseball cathedral, Vin Scully was the golden voice of summer all my life, and Tommy Lasorda remains the greatest Dodgers manager ever. My favorite things are coffee, beer, and the Dodgers beating the Giants. I also blog about my baseball card hobby at All Trade Bait, All the Time.

I have liked Nomar better, because he will truly say what he believes.

And Nomar is not constantly talking during the broadcast.

Orel tries to candy coat everything.

And Joe and Orel both over do that, and because of that, they are to much a like.

And I find that Orel and Joe over do it with some players, as compared to the other players.

I notice almost every time Hill pitches, Orel over does it with Hill.

He is constantly making excuses for Hill, or he touts some of Hill’s stats, that are positive, but I don’t know where he finds positive stats,, for Hill.

But I don’t think these guys are working for the Dodgers.

I think they are working for Charter now, since Charter bought out TWC.

But I bet the Dodgers to have a lot of say.

    1. No, the Dodgers hire and pay the announcers, Charter just buys the “feed”.
Sounds to me like Orel has developed quite a taste for the Kool Aid. The boy’s going places. Honesty is good, good luck to Nomar on his next job…
I always think of Orel as “Oral Horshitter”, good alliteration on his name.

  2. Nomar by a long shot, but if we are talking real time here, I prefer Rock Monday to both. Insightful, not afraid to say what he feels. Monday has both the chops and the knowledge that a kid like Davis needs in the booth. He see’s both sides, Orel tends to sway to pitchers and Nomar the hitters. Monday is a nice mix of both. As for Orel, I do like the guy, I just think he over thinks stuff too much. Davis is slowly growing on me, but I would rather see more Joe Davis in him and less Joe Buck. They both tend to drone on. Steiner tonight since Joe is calling the national game in Boston, Angels vs Sox.

  3. Dodgers signed a handful of their draft choices today….#1 still not signed. Vogt and Norris both DFA’d by their teams. Yankees signed Peralta.
