Brock Stewart vs. Tyler Anderson in Battle of Rookies

Brock Stewart

The trade deadline is over and the Dodgers fell flat in the 7-3 opening game loss of their three game series at Denver against the red hot Rockies. The Rockies have very quietly snuck into the wild card race by going 13-5 since the all-star break. Will they be able to keep this kind of play up without their star rookie shortstop Trevor Story?

(Update)-the Dodgers made about several months worth of roster moves all within the last half hour.

First off, Julio Urias and Josh Fields were recalled while Adam Liberatore and Louis Coleman were placed on the DL. Liberatore had that sore knee and Coleman has a shoulder injury. The offical announcement has Liberatore with a sore elbow. We’ve known about Liberatore’s knee problems, but this is the first I’ve heard of Coleman’s injury and the first wev’e heard of Liberatore having a sore elbow.

Not only that but they optioned Andrew Toles back to OKC. All so Kike Hernandez can continue to stink up the lineup with his terrible hitting. Toles was actually playing well, batting over .300 (12 for 38) so I don’t understand why he was optioned. Clayton Kershaw was transferred to the 60-day DL and is not eligible to return until August 27 at the earliest.

These moves are perfect examples of why I can’t stand the front office. Thank god Los Angeles has some bona-fide superstars like Jesse Chavez and Josh Fields. Or hitting wonders like Kike Hernandez. Total incompetence. Total betting dominance at top bonus za rejestrację bez depozytu 2022

Brandon McCarthy was atrocious on Tuesday and the Dodger bats were unable to hit Jon Gray. Newly acquired Jesse Chavez looks like another brilliant reclamation project from the front office. Josh Reddick made his Dodger debut batting cleanup and going 0 for 4. However he did make a couple of nice plays in right field. I tell you this though, if you have to use Luis Avilan in the fourth inning of a major league baseball game then you are probably going to lose.

Brock Stewart-0-1 vs. Tyler Anderson-3-3

Game Time – 5:40 PM – TV-SNLA

The series continues on Wednesday and hopefully the weather will be better at Coors Field tonight then it was on Tuesday. The Dodgers (59-47) will give the ball to rookie right hander Brock Stewart while the Rockies will counter with rookie lefty Tyler Anderson in a battle of rookies. Which rookie will come out on top?

The Dodger’s rotation is so screwed up at the moment. Everyone is hurt and the starters that are available are unable to pitch past the fifth inning. They sent down Ross Stripling to make room for Reddick and I have to wonder why they think Stewart would do a better job than him pitching at Coors Field? Perhaps it’s because they think his fastball has some sink and might be able to keep the ball in the park more than Stripling? I don’t know.

Bud Norris is back in Los Angeles getting his back examined and who knows how extensive his injury is. Rich Hill is having his blister examined as well. The Dodgers need starting pitching. You can’t win without starting pitching and you can’t have the bullpen pitch 5 innings every game. This is simply not a sustainable strategy for winning.

Stewart is making his second MLB start. His first start was back on June 29 in Milwaukee. He allowed five earned runs on eight hits over five innings and struck out 7 in a 7-0 Dodger loss. I have a bad feeling he’s going to get hammered in the rarified air of Coors Field.

As for Tyler Anderson, he’s a 26-year old left hander from Las Vegas and a former first round pick by the Rockies. He’s made 9 starts this season and is 3-3 with a 3.33 ERA. He’s tossed 54 innings and struck out 46 and walked only 10. Anderson has struck out 7.7 per nine and allowed 9.8 hits per nine innings.

He’s limited left handers to a .226 average against and is 3-1 with a 3.47 ERA at Coors Field. According to the scouting reports Anderson is more of a deceptive hurler that uses a 88-92 fastball and changeup to go along with a curveball, slider and cutter. Apparently Anderson has also had elbow and shoulder problems in the past. Sound familiar Dodger fans?

With a left hander on the mound we can fully expect the usual all-righty lineup. So expect for most of the offensive threats to not be playing. Don‘t be surprised when Kike Hernandez is batting lead-off, A.J. Ellis is catching and maybe Chris Taylor is batting cleanup. Yuck. The Giants lost again last night in Philadelphia, so the Dodgers are still 2 games back in the NL West.

Go Blue!

  1. It’s too early to tell how this trade will work out…but to say in the same sentence we are an improved team AND tonight’s starter Brock Stewart sounds hilarious. Oh well. Come on kid show’em what ya got!

    1. Whoops, am570 was wrong. Our lineup tonight according to dodgers dot com is:

      Howie
      Seager
      Turner
      SVS
      Agone
      Kike
      Joc
      AJ
      Stewie

  2. Last time the all righty line up won big.

I do not know why I even come to this sight to read about the Dodgers. It is all negative including Scott. Badger, you certainly know how to throw cold water on any positive comments.

    1. You’re the only one sounding ngative and taking everything so seriously Idahoal. Meanwhile everyone else is having a good time. Don’t rain on our parade and don’t take the internet so seriously.

        1. Bobby
I hope this game isn’t going to be bad to watch, like last night’s game.

It took them so long to hit and score runs.

And I hope they can win and make ground on the Giants.

But I don’t know if they brought anybody up for the pen.

    2. Nobody is forced to come here, we all come here for different reasons, and it’s alright. Even if you only come here to complain that the rest of us are idiots, it’s OK. If you enjoy yelling and disagreeing with others opinions here, it’s OK. Just don’t forget they have as much right as you to state that opinion. I strongly suspect some people even “color” their opinion a bit just to make others angry. This is the Internet, nobody owns it.

  3. Wow, Anderson’s averaging six innings per start? I notice he went to the same high school as Greg Maddux. And he was taken 20th in the 2011 draft after we got Chris (grrr) Reed. Bears a resemblance to Kershaw in his photos–hopefully it doesn’t carry over to pitching tonight.

  4. Everyone I just read this, Libertore and Coleman are on the DL list now.

I believe Libertore is on the DL for elbow iratation, and Coleman is on DL for shoulder fatigue I believe.

  5. Making out my Christmas list:
1.Mark Trumbo for first base. Maybe Agon can be traded in August or the off-season for something useful.
    2. Ian Desmond for… I wanted him this year as an infielder but the “brains” went with Howie Kendrick. Desmond was a pretty good shortstop, now he’s a dang good centerfielder. He could replace Pederson if they give up on him or switch to one of the other outfield slots. Or if Turner leaves, he could play third or even shortstop with Seager going to third where he is more suited.
    3. A second catcher, perhaps Norris or? Grandal is hitting well enough to retain his job and Ellis is quite obviously done.
    4. Chapman. Or Jensen as second choice.
    5. Any other good starters or relief pitchers we can afford.

    1. Badger
This front office created a on going catastrophy with the pitchers they signed, and brought to this team.

And I do blame them for Kershaw to, because he took it on himself, to make sure he can pitch close to nine innings, almost everytime he pitched.

Kershaw did this to insure at least a win, when he pitched.

Because remember how lopsided the numbers were, when anybody else, pitched besides Kershaw.

And Kershaw also did this, to help save the bullpen arms, on that one night night that he pitched.

  6. Meanwhile, Los Angeles transferred Clayton Kershaw to the 60-day DL. That’s largely a formality to clear a 40-man spot, as it was already clear that he’d miss at least that much time, but the placement certainly doesn’t change the increasing perception that the game’s best pitcher may not be able to continue what had been his greatest season as a professional. Indeed, it still seems that he has yet to begin throwing.

  7. Tyler Anderson strikes out six over six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and a walk to even his record at 3-3 “It depends on the hitter,” when asked about his go-to pitch in big spots. “Some guys, it’s fastball, some guys, it’s cutter, sometimes it’s changeup.”
