Corey Seager Begins His Awards Season With Two Wins

Everyone in the Dodgers Nation knew Corey Seager was an outstanding rookie – It turns out all of his peers in the National League thought so as well.

Yesterday Seager was named the winner of the 2016 Players Choice Award for National League Outstanding Rookie. This award is voted on and presented by the players themselves. It’s one thing to have the sportswriters to give an award, but it’s absolutely something else to be recognized and awarded by your peers. The other two finalists were Trea Turner (Washington Nationals) and Aledmys Diaz (St. Louis Cardinals).

In news that broke an hour ago, Corey Seager brought home a Silver Slugger award. He is the first Dodgers shortstop to win the SS award, and the third Dodgers rookie to win one. Fernando Valenzuela (1981) and Mike Piazza (1993) were the other two.

Seager’s production at the plate for 2016 was .308/.365/.512 with 40 doubles, 26 home runs, 72 RBI and .365 OBP. In the postseason Seager’s bat cooled off a bit. He hit .205/.255/.364, but he also powered one double, two HRs and four RBIs.

Corey Seager is also named as a finalist to win the NL Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player awards.

I was born in the shadow of Dodger Stadium and immediately drenched in Dodger Blue. Chavez Ravine is my baseball cathedral, Vin Scully was the golden voice of summer all my life, and Tommy Lasorda remains the greatest Dodgers manager ever. My favorite things are coffee, beer, and the Dodgers beating the Giants. I also blog about my baseball card hobby at All Trade Bait, All the Time.

  1. Attn Wondering (and everyone else who would like to add images to comments.
I’ve added a plugin that allows you to do that. You can see the option to add an image at the bottom of comment section.
As far as blocking posters, I’m not aware of a plugin that allows that. Open to suggestions.

    1. Thank you, Oscar. Here are some references for more interesting additions:
      1. Ignore list: An ignore list allows members to hide posts of other members that they do not want to see or have a problem with. In most implementations, they are referred to as foe list or ignore list. Usually the posts are not hidden, but minimized with only a small bar indicating a post from the user on the ignore list is there.
2.Private Message: A private message, or PM for short, is a message sent in private from a member to one or more other members.
      3. Emoticons:An emoticon or smiley is a symbol or combination of symbols used to convey emotional content in written or message form.

        1. I have one….little smaller than that thing though. That’s the Red dog after his attack. He has maybe a 3″ by 2″ gash under the bandage.

          1. Michael

You didn’t say your dog was attacked.

But I am glad he is ok.

            Did another dog attack him?

Give Red a big hug from me, I sorry he got hurt!

  2. JT has been on 570AM. He said the Dodgers are high on his list. Acknowledged they were the club that allowed him the chance to be where he is now. He also said that the Dodgers were the first team to contact his agent. He would be happy to return to the Dodgers. Letting his agent handle it.

Rumors have the Dodgers talking to Tigers about Verlander. What would be people give up for Verlander and Kinsler? The Dodgers could use Kate sitting behind home plate. It would look much better than Larry King ans his suspenders.

    1. Letting his agent handle it. What could go wrong with that? (Insert lawyer joke here)

Great season by Corey. I doubt we win the West without him. He did fade, but that might be expected with a young player carrying such a heavy load. And the fading is why it will take a couple years for our other young players to get accustomed to such a long season. Urias and De Leon, Bellinger and Verdugo, not much should be expected from them until they are strong enough. 2018 and beyond.

Verlander? Really? 34 year old owed over $100 million? That doesn’t sound FAZonian. But, nothing should surprise me now. Kinsler is 35 next year. Is picking up players years past their prime how we expect to get it done now?

And just think Corey didn’t have a great first month, because he missed most of spring training.

He would have had even better stats.

He did admitt, that he tired out, toward the end, so you are right.

He had so much mental stress all year, from everyone’s big expectations, to just hitting at the top of the order, in his first major league year.

That has to be even more tiring then the physical stuff.

I don’t think Bellinger is ready for next year, after watching him, and reading his scouting report.

He still has a lot to learn, and he is the top prospect, so I totally agree with you.

He strikes out way to much, and I think major league pitchers, would make him sit down, pretty fast.

    2. Hawkeye

Kinsler is only a rental so he won’t cost that much, and the Tigers are trying to bring there payroll down.

Kinsler hit 28 HRs, and hit just under 290, and hit in over 80 runs, he would be a upgrade, that is for sure.

My only reservation would be, will it take him a while to adjust to National League pitchers, and will he hit as well, in our line up.

Because the Tigers have a good offensive line up.

  3. Verlander would cost at least 1 top 10 prospect and probably a couple of lower tier guys. They might try their 3 team wizardry again…..Happy Veterans Day to all my brothers in arms.

      1. It is a Cuttbow. Caught at Lake John Colorado this summer,…His brother got caught too. This one was 3′ 12 Oz.

  4. Seager was way better than advertised. I would expect him to continue to improve, with more power. No telling where his ability will take him. Who are the best shortstops with HRs in the last 15 years? Tejada? ARod? He could be a 35-40 HR guy. I hope we can keep him and he’s wearing a ring or 2 before he is done. The free agent situation is not good. We have to keep what we have. Hill. Turner.Jansen. That qualifying offer of 17 mil sounds pretty tempting. Even for one year. Jansen might be smart to take it. Next year, the market for him will be better, assuming he has a comparable season. Not so tempting for Turner.

  5. The Phillies have acquired infielder/outfielder Howie Kendrick from the Dodgers, per a club announcement. First baseman Darin Ruf and second baseman/outfielder Darnell Sweeney will head to Los Angeles in return.
