Dave Roberts Lost Game 2 for the Dodgers Before it Even Began

There’s plenty of debate over where to place the blame for the Dodgers’ loss of Game 2 – was it Clayton Kershaw‘s fault, or the offense?

Actually, it was someone else’s fault. Dave Roberts lost this game before it even started.

I was born in the shadow of Dodger Stadium and immediately drenched in Dodger Blue. Chavez Ravine is my baseball cathedral, Vin Scully was the golden voice of summer all my life, and Tommy Lasorda remains the greatest Dodgers manager ever. My favorite things are coffee, beer, and the Dodgers beating the Giants. I also blog about my baseball card hobby at All Trade Bait, All the Time.

  1. Oscar
You could not have said it any better. The two best pitchers should have been put out there and years ago that is what would have happened. Koufax and Drysdale are proof. Thanks for your take. It is the best one I have heard you do.

  2. Such bullshit. Dave Roberts didn’t hit, catch or throw a ball in the game. He started a three time Cy Young Award winner at home to give him his greatest opportunity to excel. His plan to start a strong Cy Young Award winner on the road was/is solid so that Kershaw could pitch in relief in a Game 5 if necessary – “All hands on deck” as the saying goes. Kershaw had a very rough 2 innings and the Dodgers swung at balls instead of strikes. That’s what happened and blaming Dave Roberts is just venting frustration that’s warranted but at the wrong person. Team sport, team loss. Yeah, it kills me too.

    1. Sorry Dan, you gotta call a spade a spade and Oscar did just that. I guess you think that Roberts can do whatever he sees fit and if it does not work. Blame someone or the entire team. Guess what? Dummy plays a role too. In this case Oscar is right. Going into Washington up 2-0 would have been too hard to overcome for the Nats. Now it is anyone’s series which could be disasterous for the Dodgers.

    2. Go Granny, Go Granny, Go Granny, Go!
Dan you want to give your take another shot? You really want to base your take on standing by a pitcher’s past, years past in fact, who has proven to be a very mediocre performer in the post season, in your defense of a bonehead decision of the manager. Okay, hopefully what I said has stirred your mind into a more reasonable and sensible place, so give it another shot now, tells now what you think, you have got to do better with another stab at it, I hope.

“Dammit kids, stay off my lawn!”

  3. How do you know that the decision, didn’t come from upstairs…or the analytics department? That’s been par for the course, since Friedman arrived.

    1. I too believe that a bunch of statistics (pressure) is handed out from the front office to roBERTs. They hired him to carry out their wishes and strategies. It’s won for them in the regular season and it’s fallen short every post season. So there you have it, they can get to the dance but they never leave with the girl from the dance, so I guess the front office is a major Cock Block to Bert.

I am concerned this is going to be a 5 game series. At least the bullpen of the Nats is pretty poor if it is anyone other than Sherzer (?).

The Dodgers win tonight (sorry for the definitive speculation Michael) behind Ryu.

  4. Kershaw pitched to his post season average in game 2.
I was expecting disaster but he kinda got out of it
If the dodgers score 10 runs, everyone is feeling great.
At this point, Ck isn’t that shut down pitcher in the post season that we were all hoping for.
If he was, he would have at least 3 rings by now.
We need to accept that and adjust accordingly.
    Dave’s in a tough spot.

I’ve always said,ck should he left off the post season or moved to the pen.

  5. Folks, did any of you see the Astros vs Rays game last night? Did ya see how the Astro hitters kept PUTTING THE BALL IN PLAY? Can you just imagine if Dodgers somehow got to the WS and had to face this Astro team? After striking out 17 times on Friday I don’t even want to imagine what might happen facing Verlander and Cole. As far as CK goes, yes he gave a few up early but somehow he gets a little credit for at least keeping the ball in the yard. But that poorest offense made me sick to my stomach. And can only say too that Roberts and his decision making can affect the game’s outcome
