Dodgers Acquire Veteran Ryan Madson

It’s no secret the Dodgers need bullpen help. So today the Dodgers have reportedly acquired veteran reliever Ryan Madson. The 38-year old right hander was placed on revocable trade waivers by the Washington Nationals 48 hours ago. The Dodgers will be sending minor leaguer Andrew Istler to the Nationals to complete the deal. In order to clear roster space, the Dodgers have designated southpaw Adam Liberatore for assignment. It’s unclear if Madson will help the Dodger’s relief corp. It’s also doubtful that Madsen will help the Dodger’s odds of reaching the World Series increase. According to the online baseball betting experts, they still have a good chance.

Madson has been one of the most reliable late inning relievers in the game over the last decade. However he’s had a rough year with the Nationals. The Long Beach native has a 5.28 ERA in 49 appearances in Washington this season. He’s posted an 8.3 K/9 rate while walking 3.0 batters per nine across 44.1 innings pitched. Madson has walked 15 and struck out 41 while allowing 9.7 hits per nine and posting a 4.35 FIP.

The tall right hander has been battling a nerve injury in his back this season which might explain the declining numbers. Last season he posted a 1.83 ERA over 59 innings split between the Nationals and Oakland A’s. In 2016 he recorded 30 saves, and in his final season in Philadelphia he recorded 32 saves. Madson has tallied 91 big league saves over his 13 major league seasons.

Overall Madson has posted a 3.45 ERA and notched 745 major league appearances. That also includes a lengthy postseason track record as well. The Dodgers will be picking up the remainder of Madson’s 1.24 million dollar salary. He’s a free agent at the end of the season, so it’s unlikely we’ll see him back in Dodger blue in 2019. While Madson is old, and nearing the end of his career, I think it’s a good idea for the Dodgers to bring in a fresh arm. Reports also indicate that Madson is still averaging 95 MPH on his fastball throughout this season.

  1. Well, Kemp is sitting again. After 2 hits last night Dummy sits him. Does does not help Kemp maintain consistant hitting. I contend that he does it on purpose to keep Kemp from getting hot.

    1. Wrong. He does it because both he and FAZ have the IQ of a lightning bug…Or to put it another way: If brains were gasoline, they wouldn’t have enough to drive a piss ant’s go cart around the inside of a Cheerio!

    2. He doesn’t care, just following orders. For which he will be eventually fired. He and FAZ are both brainless. If brains were gasoline, they wouldn’t have enough to drive a piss ant’s go kart around a Cheerio.

  2. Joc Pederson (L) LF
    Justin Turner (R) 3B
    Manny Machado (R) SS
    Cody Bellinger (L) CF
    Yasmani Grandal (S) C
    Max Muncy (L) 1B
    Brian Dozier (R) 2B
    Yasiel Puig (R) RF
    Hyun-Jin Ryu (R) P

    1. Seems like a weak lineup to me. I would expect a lot of runners on base left stranded.

      Turner must ignite.

Let’s see what Madson can do for us. With the batters doing their normal shit, he won’t help much. It all depends on the hitting with this team.

      1. And, Turner does ignite!!! Wins the game.
Kike, Ryu’s new best friend, saves the loss. Ryu pitched well
Jansen hangs tough to get the save. Roberts had balls to let him pitch

Pederson and Hernandez both with rbi’s. This is why we need players like this. Kike a PH HR! Utility men. Now, let’s get Verdugo and Toles up here to compete for the playoffs. Get the OF jump started. Get a good hitting catcher.

Dodgers got David Freese from the Pirates! A 3B. Can he play anywhere else?

  3. Istler was 4-4 at Tulsa. Brewers picked up Gio Gonzalez from the Nats who have unloaded 5 players in the last week. Guess their retooling is underway. Liberatore DFA’d. He has not pitched a lot this year and all of a sudden the last 2 seasons he has been injury prone. Not sure what Kemp’s career numbers are against Greinke, but I am pretty sure they are not great or he would be starting. Of course Doc’s excuse would be that he is trying to get Pederson on track again. At least the human whiff machine is sitting. Taylor has been stinking up the joint for a while now. Made me sick every time I heard Davis say that he was showing signs of coming out of his slump….hell, all he did was run into a couple of pitches and got a homer and a double. If he was coming out of his malaise, he would be squaring balls up, not whiffing like some Dutch windmill.

  4. Yeah, and if you magnified his brain a billion times, shook it around, it would be like a beebee in a boxcar.
