Dodgers Bullpen Drops Third Straight

The Dodgers bullpen had blown two straight games. The first was courtesy of Pedro Baez. Last night was because of JT Chargois. Both should never be put in a high leverage situation again. This afternoon the Dodgers look to bounce back with Rich Hill on the mound facing Chad Bettis. The Dodgers have a lot of issues to work out if they plan on making the playoffs. I didn’t understand why  Cody Bellinger wasn’t in the lineup yesterday instead of Max Muncy. Today Justin Turner was on the bench. Two guys who have been hitting well.

Brian Dozier led off the game with a single but was stranded. In the bottom of the 1st, Chris Taylor misplayed a ball hit by Charlie Blackmon who reached on an error. Then a passed ball by Grandal moved him over to 2nd. D.J. LeMahieu then hit a ground ball to move the runner to third. Trevor Story hit a sac fly to score a run and a 1-0 lead. Dodgers defense of late has left little to be desired. D.J. LeMahieu then doubled in the bottom of the 4th.  David Dahl singled him in for a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the 6th, Charlie Blackmon hit a solo shot and the score was 3-0 at that point. Dodgers got runners on and have been putting them in motion lately but hitting with runners on has been a big problem, as well as hitting against left handers. Yasmani Grandal walked with one out in the top of the 7th knocking out Chad Bettis. Justin Turner then doubled of Jake Mcgee to move Grandal to third. Brian Dozier then hit a single to score two runs and the score was 3-2 Rockies.

In the top of the 8th, Yasiel Puig led off with a single. Cody Bellinger then singled off the wall moving Puig to third. Cody Bellinger stole 2nd. Matt Kemp hit a sac fly to score a run to tie the game at 3-3. John Axford who had a bad outing his first time around has pitched well the last few times and pitched two scoreless innings. Dodgers stranded Brian Dozier at third in the 9th inning. Chris Taylor needs to have a seat. Manny Machado and Matt Kemp need to snap out of it and start getting the offense going. Stop sitting guys who have been hitting.

Dylan Floro came in to pitch the bottom of the 9th, I would rather have Scott Alexander. D.J. LeMahieu hit a single which turned in to double due to an error by Puig. Trevor Story then struck out. David Dahl was walked. Ian Desmond grounded out. Ryan McMahon was walked so he couldn’t be a hero again. Nolan Arenado didn’t play most of this series. Chris Iannetta who has been super cold gets walked by Floro and the Rockies win the game. Dodgers are 11-12 since the All-Star break. They have lost three straight and are in 2nd place one game behind the snakes.

The Dodgers could’ve buried the Rockies in this series but now Colorado is only a 1/2 game behind the Dodgers.  Although the Dodgers still lead the season series. The Dodgers will activate Alex Wood and Hyun-Jin Ryu to join the rotation. Ross Stripling and Kenta Maeda are moving to the bullpen. Dodgers play the Giants at home tomorrow.

  1. Another super frustrating loss.

I feel like team is just being showcased as a grand SABR experiment to show that the 2012-2015 SABR system still works (ie to disprove that the up to date SABR systems of Astros, Red Sox, Yankees are not all that).

Instead of learning from other teams and establishing some consistency in order for this team to try to win once in a while.

  2. So tired of having to be so negative, but sometimes the truth hurts, so here goes. 1. Machado not the same guy since the trade. 2 Muncy and Kemp not the same since the all-star break. 3 Bullpen without Jansen is lousy. 4. Offense has become more inconsistent since the break. 5 Who would have thought that Dozier would have more HR’s and more RBI’s than Machado in less time. 6. Can Grandal’s defense get any worse than it is? He had bad plays in every game of this series that he played. Most leading to or involving the Rockies scoring a critical run. News: Maeda and Stripling to the pen. Ryu and Wood back in the rotation. Venditte will no doubt go down. Who else bites the dust? The lineups Roberts tosses out there every night, not necessarily the best chance to win. Hottest hitter sat today. Defense suffers with Muncy at 1st. Why was Taylor wearing sun glasses and not using them? Taylor striking out more and more and making less contact.

  3. Earlier in the year when the team struggled offensively I knew they would begin to hit. And they did. I’m not as confident now, and I’m not exactly sure why. Oh, I think they will have their moments, but guys like Taylor and Barnes, significant contributors last year, just don’t look the same. Kemp hitting .350 wasn’t going to last, and Muncy wasn’t going to hit over 40. Bellinger? Who knows. As for Machado, we’ve seen bats come to LA to die, though I do believe he will hit better. It feels like Kershaw has seen his best and now is just another decent but fragile starter. I don’t know where this goes but it feels nothing like last year.

  4. Well, sign-in is a little different now but at least it remembers our name. But in the process, we lost the little plug-in that allowed us to post pictures. I’m sure Scott or Oscar can fix that easily enough…

    1. You think?

Just checked yesterday’s okc box. Brock Stewart and Stetson Allie? Sure, why not. Stewart didn’t look good here before but is pitching well in Oklahoma. Allie at 6’2” 230 looks like a Rams linebacker. He’s striking out a lot of guys. Fresh meat. Throw him in there.

I’m still having a couple issues on sign in from my iPad. It won’t autofill and on this post I’m having trouble clicking on email and name. Didn’t remember me.

      1. Perhaps your Ipad is different than my computer. On my computer, under the comment is a small rectangular box with the instruction “Leave a Reply” above it. That’s all. When I click my cursor in the reply box, my avatar and the following line appears: ( Jonah: You are commenting using your WordPress.com account.) ( Log Out / Change ) No email, no password, just that. Underneath, a checkbox to notify me of new comments by email and a “Post Comment” button. Quite adequate, I would say.

        1. Package

Remember Roberts consults with our front office, days in advance, on all of these line ups, and days off, for players.

And with what pitchers will be used in the bullpen, from game to game, and probably in what order.

And remember Roberts bench coach, is also consulting with Roberts, what moves need to be made, during a game.

And Roberts always consults with Honeycutt during games, on which pitchers should be used, that day.

All of these decisions are not made by Roberts alone, and he didn’t construct this team, or the bullpen.

That is on our GM, who learned the ropes, from Billy Beane, himself.

And our GM was the one that said, the only problem with our offense, was that they were not hitting enough HRs.

That is not a smart remark, because this team needs to be better, when runners are in scoring position.

Because it is harder to get a hit in those situations, then hit a solo HR, when no runners are on base.

And not many HRs are hit, against good pitching!

And most of these pitchers in the bullpen, came from the trash heap, not from a good trade, or from our farm system.

    1. YF is right!

Because this team has not evolved, like the Red Soxs, the Astros, the Yankees, and the Cubs.

This team is constructed, and ran, much like the A’s, and that is not surprising, since our GM, is from the A’s!

Look at the line up, it is a bunch of average hitters, with pop, and that is why most of the players on this team, can’t get important hits, when runners are in scoring position.

But if one of these average hitters, hits one out, they almost all, will hit one out, just like the first game in this series!

Joc hit the first one out, but immediately, Muncy came up, and hit one out.

And three more players came up to the plate in that game, and hit one out.

And this all happened, after the Rockies took out their starter!

Because the Rockies have a terrible bullpen, and we don’t have Kenley, to close out games!
