Dodgers Get Much Needed Sweep

Justin Turner

A bloop hit last night by Justin Turner salvaged a game for the Dodgers which Kenley Jansen almost blew. So today the Dodgers put Hyun-Jin Ryu on the mound against left hander Robbie Erlin. The Brewers, Phillies, and Snakes all won today. The Rockies lost. The Dodgers had a chance to gain more ground. In the top of the 2nd. Franmil Reyes hit a solo shot and the fathers had the early lead.

In the top of the third, Will Myers hit a triple. Hunter Renfroe singled him in and the Padres led 2-0. The Dodgers needed a spark. With two outs in the bottom of the 5th, Hyun Jin Ryu singled and had two hits on the day. Brian Dozier then worked a walk. Justin Turner then doubled in two runs and the score was ties 2-2. Manny Machado hit a two run shot and the Dodgers took a 4-2 lead and chased Erlin from the game. That was Machado’s biggest hit as a Dodger.

In the bottom of the sixth, Yasmani Grandal walked. Joc Pederson then came to walk. Both runners moved  over due to a wild pitch. Justin Turner then singled in two runs and the Dodgers led 6-2. Ryu went six innings. In the bottom of the 8th, Max Muncy walked. Justin Turner then doubled him in and the Dodgers led 7-2. Dylan Floro pitched two scoreless innings. Yimi Garcia came in to the pitch the 9th. Hunter Renfroe greeted him with a solo shot and the Dodgers led 7-3.

Dodgers are 2.5 back of the Snakes for the division. The Dodgers are 1.5 back of the Rockies. They are also 2.5 back of the Brewers for the second wild card spot. The Dodgers have the day off tomorrow. The next two are against the Rangers in Texas. The Dodgers are 17-18 since the All-star break.

  1. While I wasn’t able to watch the game, I see the heart and soul of the team (Turner), once again, leads the charge. 5 rbi’s. Clutch, clutch, clutch. Turner has been locked and loaded and looking as healthy as he’s been all season. He is simply unafraid of the ball and sees it like no other Dodger, IMO. He also feels it as I don’t recall a player who gets hit at the plate more than he does.

Nice to see Ryu continue the good pitching he’s capable of and get the run support that all pitchers need. Nice and needed sweep. Let’s do it again in Texas. Get Muncy back in the leadoff spot.

  2. They beat a team they should beat. But other than Friday’s blowout, they did not dominate San Diego. Saturday’s game was close, and was this one until the late scoring. As it was, the Padres had runners on every inning. They had 15 hits, but just could not get that clutch one. It was more of the pitching staff getting out of trouble than anything else. Machado getting that go ahead homer was nice to see. He might be figuring out that at Dodger Stadium, you need to pull the ball a little more rather than hit it towards CF. Thanks to the Birds for beating the Rocks again, they inch a little closer to 2nd. He is an oddity, the Dodgers are pretty much the only contending team without a 10 game winner. But considering that they have used a ton of starting pitchers, that is not all that weird. Stripling with 8 wins leads the team. Verdugo had 3 hits in OKC’s 3-1 win to raise his average to 335. But Farmer’s 2 run dinger was the game winner. Rancho won their 81st game, and 6th in a row. Dodgers could use a run like that…..they are halfway there. Farmer played SS and 3rd in that game. Will Smith’s average at OKC now stands at .136. Slipping on the old depth chart there.

  3. Who thinks they make a deal before the Sept 1 deadline? I am not so sure they will. The DL guys, except Fields, are close to returning. The September call ups are just around the corner, so both the pitching staff and the offense will have some reinforcements. They have Stripling, Urias, Cingrani, Goeddel, Rosscup, Axford and Chargois off the DL soon, with Stewart and Liberatore, remember him? Down on the farm. Utley will probably come off the DL after September 1. Farmer, Toles, Verdugo, Locastro, all on the 40 man and could be recalled when the AAA season ends. Not sure FAZ will use a trade to fix that black hole that is late inning relief. Renfroe has mad power. He hit one in SD off of the warehouse down the left field line.

  4. Urias will soon be available. Maybe he can join Ferguson and Maeda for the much needed help in innings 6-9. We all hope Jansen will get his collective stuff together, but if that doesn’t happen, Roberts has to figure a way to stop adding to that BLSV stat. We’re at 25 now. That is an insanely high number. What’s interesting is, SF, LA and Colorado are 1,2,3 in that stat. Arizona has 17, which is why they still lead the West. Plug that hole and we will catch them in September.

We have the bats to compete with anyone – when they hit. The inconsistency of this offense is maddening.

Not that anybody cares, but Zach Greinke is 13-8, 168.2 innings of 2.93 ERA. If he was still here…….

    1. Yeah, and guys who were available in trade or as free agents doing well too, Gerrit Cole and AJ Happ. I read that the plan was for Urias to be a 2-3 inning guy. They do not plan to have him be a starter.

  5. Hey, MJ, Urias is going to be pitching at Cucamonga sometime this week. treat yourself to a game there and tell us about it.

    1. Jonah

The first time I told you I lived in Rancho you had me look at this video.

I had no idea Cucamonga was the big joke, or stop in movies.

I only remember Jack Benny talking about Cucamonga when I was a child, and that is why they have a street in Rancho, for Benny.

Thanks for reminding me about this song!

  6. Bottom line, Turner is the reason we won that game!

I don’t know that Manny hits that one out, if Turner doesn’t change the momentum of this game, and ties the game.

And Roberts was really lucky we did win this game.

Because the players at the bottom of this line up, didn’t do much, although Kike did have three hits.

Puig struck out three times, and left 6 runners on base yesterday, and that can’t happen, if the Dodgers want to make the post season.

Ryu also played a big part in this game too.

Although the Padres got an early lead on Ryu, he pitched tough for almost 6 innings, and kept the Padres from scoring again.

And he had two hits, and his second hit is what started the rally, that the Dodgers took the lead with.

Roberts can’t continue to play these same players at the end of the line up against lefties and expect to win.

Non of these players including Kike, are hitting lefties well this year, and Muncy should be in every game we play against a leftie, because he is not only hitting better then these players against lefties, he is OPSing in the 900s against lefties.

  7. YF

You are right, it is depressing watching this team not doing very well against the Padres, especially the back of the line up that flailed in almost every at bat they had, against the Padre’s pitchers.

I don’t think we will be facing a leftie in this next series, unless they bring one up from their farm system, because Hammels was traded.

When Hammels was traded to the Cubs, I thought of you!

Last year it was Verlander, that you wanted the Dodgers to trade for, and this year it was Hammels, and although Hammels is no Verlander, I heard he is doing a really good job for the Cubs since he was traded there.

That is two in a row for you!

    1. Lost opportunities.

Had we gotten Verlander last year the FBZ would have been forced into not picking up Forsythe’s option. And picking up Forsythe’s option essentially killed our chances for picking up Cole Hamels as the mandate was to stay below the lux tax threshold. So instead of Verlander or Hamels, we have Forsythe for another half a year of uselessness. Athletes who outperform in their contract years are always suspicious to me. Proven winners on bad clubs, who would give anything to win again, are the sure bets, at least to me.

It’s not September yet but according to USA Today, Cole Hamels is having one of the best career renaissance of any pitcher in the last 100 years. Yes he’s not Verlander but he may surpass him in his impact on a subpar Cubs rotation.

      1. YF

You are so right about Forsythe, and players in their contract years.

I think the Forsythe contract also cost us a good arm for the pen too.

But that decision was such a bad decision, and there is no defense for that decision, especially with all the second baseman we have on this team, especially when money was so tight!

And then there is Bryce Harper.

  8. No matter what Manny may do, I remain firmly against rentals. No matter what they may do, the team could still lose, and they usually cost too much. Dozier may or may not end up as a rental but I see that transaction as a positive, no matter what Dozier does. Forsythe was a mistake and the longer he was here, the more he was pulling the team down, both in performance and psychologically. Trading him was a positive move both for the team and for him. Glad to see he is over it and doing well elsewhere.

    1. Jonah,

Why would you be down on rentals? And, in particular, these latest trades of ours, Machado and Dozier? Machado is a top 15 player in the MLB. At $16M, he is cheap. Of course, next season, he will not be cheap, but we off loaded one of the heaviest anchors on the team, Forshyte, got a great hitting/fielding player, and we get to audition him first before buying. Seems perfect for this team who was going nowhere. Add Dozier to cover Forshyte’s position and who is a high OBP player and hustle defender with some power and history of playing well in the 2nd half of seasons, and this is a win/win for us. Whether we retain them or not, it puts us in a good position to push for the playoffs now, and talk later.

  9. “I remain firmly against rentals”

“Dozier may or may not end up a rental, but I see that that transaction as a positive”

Translation: “I’m firmly against rentals unless I’m not.”

Rentals are a part of the game and can work out on occasion. I’m all for the Manny move. I’m all for the Dozier move. I’d like to have seen reliever move too, but I like our lineup a lot better now.

      1. “Man who contradicts himself in the same paragraph might be an oxymoron” – Badgerdamus 2018

Sometimes I feel like I’m the only guy here wha wants the Dodgers to win. I don’t anticipate this FAZ model actually working but I hope it does.

Hamels and Murphy currently look like better pickups than our guys.

    2. Once again you have displayed a weakness in understanding sentences and paragraphs. My two sentences are not in conflict and everyone else here figured that out. Your loss.

  10. Kelvin Herrera is down for the year. He is a free agent this fall and the injuries will hurt his marketability. Maybe his price will fall low enough to interest FAZ.

  11. The #Dodgers have signed veteran right-handed reliever Zach McAllister to a minor league deal and he has been added to the @okc_dodgers roster.

McAllister was a mainstay of the Indians’ bullpen the last few seasons and put up some pretty good numbers.

    12:59 PM – 27 Aug 2018

    1. This year he is 1-2 with a 6.20 ERA. He does have a decent strikeout to walk ratio, almost 4-1. But to be on the active roster, someone would have to come off the 40 man.

      1. Yeah, McAllister is a no news signing. Herrera appears useless too.

Weakness in understanding sentences? Man, what’s happening with you Jonah? You’ve become prickly all of a sudden. I understand sentences just fine. And I’m just busting your chops old friend. Sorry to have upset you. I’ll be more careful from here on. No teasing of Jonah. Got it.

  12. When we played the Nats in the post season, Murphy scared me far more then Harper, when he was up at the plate.
