Dodgers Give The Ball To Mike Bolsinger To Continue Home Cooking

Mike Bolsinger

The Dodgers will go for their sixth consecutive home win tonight against Colorado as the Rockies come into town for a three game series. The Dodgers completed a sweep of the Braves on Sunday afternoon with a 12-6 win. The Dodgers slugged another four home runs on Sunday. Corey Seager blasted two more long balls to give him 14 which leads the club. The Dodgers are now 16-12 at home. They closed the gap to 3.5 games in the National League West with some help from the Cardinals who defeated the Giants on Sunday night baseball. Mike Bolsinger will take the mound for the Dodgers tonight, as Colorado will give the ball to right hander Tyler Chatwood.

The Dodgers have faced Chatwood before many times in the past. The 26-year old Redlands native is having a solid year. Chatwood is 6-4 with a 2.99 ERA in 11 starts. His strikeout rate has decreased from 7.4 in 2014 to 5.7 this season. However he’s allowed only 8.4 hits per nine with 44 strikeouts in 69 innings pitched. He still has good control as he’s posted a 2.5 BB/9 rate and has a 1.212 WHIP.

Tyler Chatwood-6-4 vs. Mike Bolsinger-1-2

Game time – 7:10 PM – TV-SNLA

The Dodgers beat him back on April 23 at Coors Field. In that start he allowed three earned runs on six hits over four frames. He lost his last start to the Reds when he allowed 5 runs, (four earned) on 8 hits over 5.2 innings. Chatwood is 3-5 with a 3.68 ERA in 8 career starts. He’s pitched very well at Dodger Stadium though. At the Ravine he is 2-2 with a 1.44 ERA in 4 career starts.

Chatwood has limited the Dodgers to a .234 (15 for 64) average against with a .674 OPS. A.J. Ellis and Adrian Gonzalez have hit home runs against him.

Bolsinger’s last start was a bit shaky in the early innings against Chicago, but he eventually settled down to allow two earned runs on two hits over five innings of work. He struck out six and walked two and took the loss by a 2-1 score because the Dodgers couldn’t score any runs for him. Bolsinger has made 4 career starts against Colorado and is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA. He’s 5-4 with a 3.92 ERA at Dodger Stadium.

The current Rockies are batting .274 (17 for 62) against Bolsinger with a .732 OPS against. Cargo is batting .455 (5 for 11) with a home run and Charlie Blackmon has a career .364 average against Bolsinger.

  1. These are the NEW Dodgers. Carl Crawfish is gone! I understand you are only supposed to say good things about a person once they are gone, so here goes:

    He’s gone! Good!

Turn the page. Move on – there’s nothing to see here folks. It was addition by subtraction. I do think the mindset of the team has changed. Let me tell you a story. A few years ago, Roger Dodger and I were having a conversation about Pete Rose with Former Commissioner Faye Vincent at Vero Beach. Of course, I was arguing that Pete should be re-instated. Roger was against it as was Faye and I’ll never forget what Faye said (although I don’t agree):

<i)"The fact that we kicked Pete Rose out, who was arguably the best player in the game, players know we will kick them out too if they gamble on baseball."

Dodger players now have to know that if the Dodgers will DFA Carl Crawfish, who is owed about $35 million dollars, they will DFA anybody.

Hatcher better get his act together.

I don’t get the hatred for Grandal. Is it because he cost the “beloved Kemp?” Grandal is highly regarded around baseball but not by Dodger fans. I think it’s because he cost them their fan favorite. You will be sorry if you lost him. Daniel Brim of Dodger Digest wrote this about Grandal on June 4th (before his 3-run HR):

Grandal is in a slump, of course, but he’s still taking walks and it’s not like Ellis is a masher. It feels like the Dodgers may be hiding an injury here, and if Grandal is hurt they should just put him on the DL. If he’s not hurt, he still offers quite a bit of upside over Ellis. In 2016 Grandal holds an 82 wRC+ to Ellis’ 67, and Grandal is significantly better on defense. If Grandal is healthy, he’s riding the bench way too much. If he’s not, bring up Austin Barnes instead.

Once Grandal comes out of his slump, he is very easily tradeable, if that’s what you want – I just don’t know why anyone would want to give up on a young guy (he’s only 27) with his power. Lots of players come into their own in their late 20’s. Grandal has lots of trade value, but his power is elite!

    1. Grandal? Oh, let’s see, lifetime .236 hitter, (currently a very Crawford like .192) with a CS% below league average, leads the league in passed balls and in 5 years of doing what he does has accumulated only 0.5 dWAR. To his credit he has also somehow accumulated in these 5 years 7.2 oWAR, so, there is some blind squirrel value. Matt Kemp has nothing to do with it. If a catcher can only hit .236 he better have a slugging % of .500 or have defensive genius. Grandal, thus far, has shown neither.

      1. Of course you omit anything that doesn’t support your made up argument.

He only has 1132 AB’s, but his career OB% is .346 and his OPS is .752.

        Compare Career Stats:

        Lucroy – .342 OB%/..780 OPS
Martin – .349 OB%/.750 OPS (and you propounded signing him as a FA)
        Pierzynski – .320 OB%/.741 OPS

I can go on and on, but Grandal has a lot fewer AB’s than the above players. Matter of fact. a lot of people here wanted Martin and his is currently batting .197 with a .264 OB%/.551 OPS with 4 HR and 15 RBI. In case no one has ever explained it, it’s a long season.

You were against Grandal from the get go, while I was a big proponent of the trade (detect a trend?). Grandal started out good last year. He was an All-Star, but his injury slowed him down. That’s when you started running your mouth. Now that he’s off to a slow start (LIKE LOTS OF OTHER PLAYERS), you like to pile on. I understand however, that it’s a long season. Let’s see what happens. Keep talking while you can – I’ll be sure to remind you.

And Grandal is a lot better defensively than most people think. He’s also the top pitch framer in baseball – of course, you evidently don’t believe in that!

        1. Mark, you are a legend in your own mind, and Grandal is a slug….pure and simple, and no where near as good as you think he is.

        2. His pitch framing is so elite Mark keeps trying to move his to first base. Imagine how good Kershaw could be if only he would stop insisting on pitching to Ellis. Sure he could bounce back–just like Puig–but I’m not holding my breath.

    2. Grandal is rated more highly then he should be due to the recently-discovered “science” of pitch framing. The assumption is that Grandal is better at stealing strikes on borderline pitches than Ellis, who is not considered an elite pitch framer. Ellis rates better at nearly everything else that a catcher does behind the plate, including game calling, blocking and throwing out runners. To me, Grandal looks a little awkward behind the plate, especially compared to Ellis.

Grandal has more power but Ellis is famously better at working a count. Grandal has not been consistent in his major league career. He looked like he was going to be a major force as a hitter the first 1/2 of last season, but hasn’t been too good since (Yeah, I know that he was injured last Summer).

I disagree that catchers “come into their own” offensively in their late 20’s. By then, their bodies have started to wear down from wearing the tools of ignorance. Guys at other positions, OK, but not catchers.

      1. AJ didn’t even make it to the majors until his late 20’s. Ellis’ defensive numbers are inflated by catching Kershaw.

        1. His numbers were better than Grandal’s when he was the regular catcher and was catching everyone. Wrong answer.

          1. Very true, and he was solid the year before he got hurt. And his numbers are not inflated by catching Kershaw, that would be once every 5 days, and not really mean crap.

      1. I think part of the reason people feel that way about Grandal, is because Mattingly continued to play Grandal, instead of AJ, when Grandal was hurt, last year. And because Grandal was hurt, he wasn’t able to hit at all. Grandal shouldn’t have been playing at all, and especially, since AJ was hitting pretty well, at that time.

        1. Right MJ, Grandal should have gone on the DL and should not have been playing in the playoffs at all, But a lot of that was the FO not DM.

    3. I agree with the many of the people on this blog. It has nothing to do with Kemp. The guy is a horrible defensive catcher. If it were not for the “made up stat” of framing he would not be considered for a job. Also he gets hurt a lot.. He is always hurt. Catchers get banged up all of the time it is the nature of the job. But they must learn to play through it. He attempts to play through it and ends up below the Mendoza line. He does not call a great game either. But he cannot or will not block balls in the dirt.

  2. Grandal hasn’t been great yet, but he’s young, and you can see the potential/talent at times. But good lord, some here on the last post suggested waiving him as well??? That’s a tad ridiculous now

Montas has done really well since he’s returned. Expect him up here in the next couple weeks as well, and hopefully Howell or Hatcher is the next guy to join Crawford on the ‘gone fishin’ list.

We need minimum 2 of 3 vs the Rockies. And since I’m going tomorrow night to see Urias, I’d like one of those wins tomorrow!

    1. Young??? He is almost 28. I see a guy who other than the first 12 weeks of last season is not all that great a hitter. He is terrible blocking pitches in the dirt, and if it was not for AJ, who has tutored him, would have no clue how to form a game plan. His so called pitch framing aside, he is not that great a catcher. If you look at his stance it is a wonder he can turn on anything with his arms that close to his body. He does not hit in the clutch, and has a terrible caught stealing pct. The other night he made a totally dumb throw to second and was saved by Utley from throwing the ball into CF. Waive him, maybe not, but I would trade him as soon as he has any value, and trust me I would not miss that guy a bit. AJ is a better catcher, and other than HR’s his lifetime BA is .239….Grandal’s is .236…..and Montas has pitched in 2 games a total of 3.1 innings……so I doubt he is ready…

  3. Waiving Grandal? No. But he isn’t strong enough to last a full season. Maybe that’s a trend he can overcome.

Mark, he is a career .236 hitter that is currently hitting .192. His defensive stats are what they are. And the “pitch framing” stat is horsesh*t and will go the way of the outside chest protector in short order. I agree he often looks awkward behind the plate. I also agree he can work a walk and is strong enough to run into one now and then. Thus the blind squirrel reference. I remain unimpressed and it has nothing to do with your opinion as I stopped valuing that years ago. My opinion has to do with what I see night after night. I just don’t think he’s that good. Maybe that changes. I hope so because for this team to beat the better teams in our league, and there are a few, we will need all hands on deck.

    1. You are a lot nicer than me. I did not like the guy when he was a Padre and nothing has changed. And although the price was Kemp, that was not why I disliked the trade. I thought and still do that the Dodgers were fleeced by San Diego and that we got too little for the deal. Grandal is now the only piece left from that trade. Elfin went to Philly for Rollins who is gone and Joe Wieland was released. To me that is small return for a power hitting OF who drove in 100 runs last year. Was Kemp’s contract unwieldy>? Sure, but the guy when healthy is twice the hitter Grandal is. I just think if they were going to trade Matt, they should have gotten better players.

      1. Can’t argue the logic there Michael. 100 ribbies is a big deal. So is 23 home runs playing in that park. He hit 13 at home. I wonder how many went to the warning track. He’s only hitting .236 now, but already 14 home runs and 39 RBIs. Nobody goes to the can when he’s coming up.

        1. My last word on Grandal…..look, I admit I really dislike the guy, so that is a given. But I look at it this way. Since the Dodgers came west how many truly offensive catchers have they had? When they got here it was Roseboro and Pignatano. Neither was a barn burner at the plate. Norm Sherry replaced Piggy. He was not that great a hitter either, but he and Rosey controlled the game and were good defensively. Down through the years they have had good defensive catchers. The best hitter was Piazza, a once in a lifetime kind of player, but he was terrible throwing out runners, did it matter? No because he was a 300 hitting 30 HR plus machine. They traded him for a terrible catcher in Charles Johnson, so so defense and absolutely no stick. Yeager and Scioscia were great defensive guys, so so with the bat. Fergy was a good hitter with so so defensive skills. Haller was past his prime when the Dodgers got him, so was Gary Carter, Johnny Oates, and many others. Paul LoDuca, and Russell Martin could hit, and were pretty good behind the dish. AJ is not a great hitter, but he is a LEADER……a skill Grandal has no grasp of….period….

          1. Fergie was outfielder, who was converted to catcher. Fergie had some clutch HRs, back then.

      2. We don’t want Kemp. Repeat. We don’t want Kemp. His atrocious defense and arthritic hips are someone else’s headache, now. As I mentioned before, for Preller to move him, the Pods are going to have to eat salary.

        1. Nobody said we want him back…what we said is A. He is a better run producer than Grandal, which is true and scoring runs is the name of the game, and B. The Dodgers got CRAP back……PERIOD

          1. That the Dodgers got much of anything is impressive. They sold him at the top of the market after his strong second half in 14.

          2. I disagree..with them eating a portion of that contract they could have done better. Surely better than 2 minor league pitchers and a catcher who is a below average defender. Kemp has delivered 36 homers and 139 RBI’s since donning the Padre brown…….Grandal not even close to that…

  4. Too bad we are done with the Braves. Now, for some competition. Bolsinger vs the Rockies. Dodgers are favored for some reason. I think the Rockies have taken their lumps lately. Maybe that’s why. Next Urias. The bats better stay alive for these games. From the last few games, we can see how one guy can ignite an offense. Seager has shown power I didn’t think he had. Balls were flying out of hot LA yesterday afternoon. I don’t like Kazmir’s injury. A quad. Better than an elbow or shoulder or hamstring. But still troubling, and just when it seemed that the was finding some timing in his delivery.Bullpen better be ready this week. The era’s are still bad, but that stat might not be as important for a 1 inning guy. Is Utley in a slump? I think so. Go Red Sox.

    1. Bolsinger is nothing more than a 5 inning guy. This game will be in the hands of the bullpen. Rockies are a different team without Tulo. But they have been getting good production from some of their players. Pitching still their achillie’s heel. Kazmir did not hurt his quad, he had a leg cramp,..

    2. Bobby17
Utley should have had two hits yesterday. Utley hit a line hit to rightfield that should have been a hit, but the Brave’s rightfielder made a good play on the ball.

And Utley had a double later in the game.

So I don’t think Utley is in a slump.

  5. Interesting bullpen stats in DD. High leverage vs low leverage. Bullpen is great in the latter and lousy in the former. On Crawford: He was a force in Tampa Bay. As a Dodger, he was always on the outside looking in. If healthy, he might have had a chance to succeed in LA, but his body never cooperated. As a Dodger, the best I can say about him is that he took his lumps quietly and without fanfare and with the team in mind. A good thing. I agree with some of the posts that his going opens the organization to the young guys. I don’t think it’s Barnes, though. Right now it will have to be. Barnes doesn’t bring much to the team except versatility. We have a bunch of those guys. I would rather rely on Kendrick getting hot.

  6. As today is June 6th, I take a break for a moment to remember all those young men who stormed the beaches at Normandy to rid the world of Nazism and Adolph Hitler. We should never forger their sacrifice. If they had failed, the world would be a far different place.

        1. Not all our youth are that way. Those kids in the military today have my respect. As a vet I think it takes courage for anyone to put on the uniform and step up to defend our country. No matter how bad the leadership at the top….I had Johnson, Nixon and Ford as my CIC…….they have Obummer………

  7. Actually Montas has been in 5 games since he returned from injury. 8ip, 12k 2bb and a 1.13 ERA. He had a great shot at making the team much earlier, but suffered that rib injury.

So yea, he should be up in the next couple weeks

    1. You are right, stats were not up to date, but he still needs innings, and as good as he is there are no guarantee’s he will not have the control problems he had in Chicago..I am more wait and see….

  8. Austin Barnes has a career minor league batting average of .301 with a .391 OB%. – .825 OPS

    Corey Seager has a career minor league average of .302 with a .367 OB%. OPS – .891

Now, I am not saying Barnes is the equal of Seager, but he only has 55 AB’s on the major league level. He has always been called up temporarily. If he knows here here to stay, I think you will see a very solid hitter: .270 – .285 BA and .350+ OB%.

    He just needs some time.

    1. And Joc Pederson’s minor league #’s were .302 with a .405 OB%. OPS -.929. He hasn’t exactly tore it up with his .212 BA in the bigs.

In actuality if saving money was the issue, then Kendrick should not have been resigned (and especially for 2 years)…..who was FAZ bidding against? Barnes should have been up with the team to start the season.

With Thompson performing well Crawford’s lack of hitting was going to cost him his position on the team when Ethier or SVS came back anyway but that would have been on him.

That’s where I was for letting the kids play…..Barnes, Thompson, Johnson, of course Seager and whomever else has shown promise.

They are slowly getting there but that was not the original plan….Thompson only playing cause Ethier and SVS got hurt otherwise he would still be toiling in AAA. Barnes only being brought up because Crawford has sucked. Johnson will only get called up if Kendrick is moved.

At some point would like to see some proactive ‘big boy’ decisions rather than the continued reactive decisions that are being made. No vision whatsoever.

  9. I have figured out why so many people are down on Hatcher (other than he sucks), Hernandez, Barnes and Kendrick: IF THOSE GUYS SUCK, IT MAKES THE DEE GORDON TRADE LOOK BAD!

Simple as that. So parts of you secretly root for them to fail as you pine for Dee. I get it now!

      1. Are we down on them, or is it the front office? They decided to let Howie walk, send Barnes back to AAA, and keep Hernandez in a platoon role…nobody took a vote. I hope Barnes does well enough to win the job full-time next year, and not just because it would give us SOMETHING to show from that trade.

      2. Oh, it’s more than that. If a naysayer’s raison d’etre is naysaying, then having more justification to naysay is in his interest – it validates his points.

No one wants to lose an argument.

        1. I think what is more important to the discussion is winning games, not arguments. Are we better now than we were then? It doesn’t look like it to many. But then, their raison d’etat is to win a championship, not a debate in a chat room.

          1. You made a good point, too, about Agon being a perfect cultural fit in LA. Ownership really wanted Agon….I really wanted Agon. It’s timing. Had the money been there with the new owners the season before or so, the Dodgers could have made a play on signing him out of San Diego rather than the Sox.

Another point about The Trade: True, the Dodgers won the division three straight years after the trade, but the Sox won it all the year after they shed those contracts. Just sayin’

          2. nah….just saying that maybe the key to a WS team is not a race to see who pays for the most “impact players” but who has the necessary pieces.

Does anyone even remember the players who put butts in the seats on that WS team?

        2. What do you mean by necessary pieces? Necessary for what? Assuming you meant winning a championship, do you mean to tell me McCarthy, Anderson, Latos, Wood and Grandal are those pieces? Or maybe it’s Bolsinger, Kazmir, Stripling, Hatcher?

We have some decent players spread out over both rosters. I just don’t see the depth of real talent to win the Division, followed by 3 series against the best teams in MLB. Do you?

    1. It’s not a matter of why people want….it’s a matter of how have they performed 1/3 into the season.

      Hatcher….sucks
      Hernandez…. .220 BA, has sucked
      Barnes…..in AAA, jury still out
      Kendrick……. .227 BA, has sucked

      It’s just the facts.

    2. The Dee Gordon trade WAS bad. He was an impact player – a guy who could score 100 runs, steal 50 bases, play Gold Glove caliber defense, and gave the Dodgers a genuine leadoff hitter. They received spare parts in return.

I wouldn’t trade an impact player for spare parts.

And no fair brining up the PED issue – you didn’t know that he was on the juice at the time (or if he was at the time) – no one did.

      1. The PED issue is fair in the sense that his “impact” was probably artificially inflated. He broke out last year, and was physically stronger and bigger. He was hitting a more pedestrian .260 I think when he was suspended.

If the spare parts provide more overall value than the one player, then you have to look at the trade differently. Pundits at the time were saying the Marlins got fleeced.

    3. And Mark I like Barnes, but I am not convinced yet, that he can hit major league pitching.

But I hope he can, because he looks like one of those players, that will find a way, to help there team win.

And the last thing this team needs, is another player, who can play second and third base.

  10. From Dodgers.com re: the upcoming draft:

“This is the second Draft of the new management team. Billy Gasparino is the quarterback as director of amateur scouting, but top brass Andrew Friedman, Farhan Zaidi, Josh Byrnes, Alex Anthopoulos and David Finley are also heavily involved in a group effort. In their first Draft last year, top pick Walker Buehler needed Tommy John surgery, and the next pick, Funkhouser, didn’t sign.”

“The Dodgers spent $115.5 million to sign Cuban infielders Hector Olivera, Alex Guerrero and Erisbel Arruebarrena, and they’re already written off, so it’s a reasonable guess that the organization still needs infielders, as well as run producers at any position, and, as always, starting pitching.”

Doesn’t exactly inspire confidence – but Guerrero and Arruebarrena are laid at the feet of Colletti et al.

  11. Speaking of Cubans:
Outfielder Lazaro “Lazarito” Armenteros and second baseman Jose Miguel Fernandez will take part in a showcase of Cuban talent to be held on June 13, Ben Badler tweets. This is two days before the close of the 2015-16 international signing period, and as Badler noted two weeks ago, time is running out for the Dodgers (and other clubs facing a $300K spending ceiling in the next signing period) to sign Armenteros while they still can Fernandez, of course, can sign at any time for any amount since he is exempt from the pools.
Cuban righty Vladimir Gutierrez took part in a private workout for Dodgers officials yesterday, Baseball Essential’s Robert Murray reports. The Dodgers have long been rumored to be interested in Gutierrez, though since he is pool-eligible, the June 15 deadline looms large for L.A. given the number of other teams who have been linked to Gutierrez. That said, Gutierrez has also been a free agent for almost a full year and has yet to sign a contract.

    1. MLB is dragging it’s feet declaring the Gourriel brothers free agents, probably to deny the Dodgers a chance to spend more money.

  12. The problem here is we are giving the ball to Bolsinger. And he is the Lord of the Long Ball. The problem with a curve ball pitcher with poor control is that they hang curves over the center of the plate from time to time and in the Show professional hitters hit the ball. Usually they hit the ball a very long way.
Bolsinger sucks get someone from the minors that can at least eat some innings. He is horrible and his 5 innings of work kills the Bull Pen.
You need someone that has the potential for electric stuff. Bolsinger is at best mediocre. If he is healthy bring back Frias he at least has the potential to dominate a game the guy has electric stuff when he is on. Try Lee his is pitching well in OK city.

    1. Why didn’t Stripling come back? His main problem, was that he would try to be to fine, after pitching ok most of the game.

And that is something that can be fixed with more experience. And Stripling is better then Bolsinger.

  13. Yeah, give the ball to Lee. He’s next up. If they don’t believe he can do it, why is he still here?

Bolsinger’s ERA is right about where one might expect it to be. He just doesn’t seem to have the length to be a ML starter. Long man? What he needs to do is to be able to relieve himself. No, not that way. Pitch 4 innings, then come out of the bullpen and pitch 4 more – then turn the game over to Jansen.

  14. OK, I have heard that the Dodgers have been “tanking” De Leon so far this season. They have allegedly been working with him on flexibility and core exercises. They believe that he can pitch 100+ innings from July through the end of the season. They will unleash him in the next couple of weeks. They are very high on him as a starter. They believe he is ahead of Urias.

This is from another organization who “Thinks” that this is what is happening. We shall see….

    1. I hope so. They are going with AAAA guys like Bolsinger – he’s moderately useful but is going to be a .500 pitcher at best. They need better than that, especially with the offense (or lack thereof). Let’s see if any of the “crown jewels” have what it takes.

    2. So another organization knows what FAZ is doing….I doubt it. And ‘tanking’ a prospect is not necessarily a good thing. So DeLeon is now ahead of Urias so they chose to promote Urias first. Makes a lot of sense….NOT. Either this bunch is dumber than I thought or someone is smoking some good stuff….are they from Colorado?

      1. Don’t you think if De Leon were ready to pitch he would be brought up? Tanking? I tank somebody made that up.

And they are now working on core and flexibility? That isn’t already part of every player’s conditioning program? That sounded like this is something new for De Leon.

      2. Last I heard DeLeon had a sore arm…unleash him, already. How can another organization know what FAZ is doing when–oh, never mind. We just signed another castoff to a minor-league contract BTW.

          1. Badger
I read that DeLeon was shut down for a sore shoulder about three weeks ago.

  15. Badger
I am not sure, but I did read that. I remember thinking that is bad news, because shoulders are the worse injury pitchers can get.

    1. All I could find was that he experienced soreness. I didn’t do an exhaustive search, and I’m not “connected” with anyone so what do I know. And I’ll be honest, I’ve never heard the term tanking used the way Mark used it. I don’t know what that means when it comes to a high valued prospect. De Leon, by all accounts I read, was the most ready to step in pitching prospect in our organization. Now he has disappeared.

  16. We don’t even know where our prospects are, much less when they’ll be ready. A fine mess.
