Dodgers Return Home, Reinforcements Arriving Soon

Julio Urias

The deadline for roster expansion has come and passed. The Dodgers will be calling up reinforcements from the minor leagues. One of those players is reportedly Yasiel Puig, who has been languishing away in Oklahoma City for the past few weeks. Other guys like Austin Barnes, Louis Coleman, and Pedro Baez are expected to join the Dodgers this week amongst others.

The Dodgers sure had a happy flight home from Denver after they were able to salvage one game of their three game set thanks to an incredible 8-run rally that was highlighted by a grand slam home run from Andrew Toles. What makes the flight happier is knowing they will not have to go back to that hell hole again this season.

The Dodgers will begin a six game home stand that opens with a three-game series against the Padres. The Dodgers are 8-5 against San Diego this season. The Padres come into town with a 55-78 record and are 19 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West. The Padres are 25-44 on the road.

Dodgers Lineup vs. San Diego

It looks like Puig is in the lineup tonight batting fifth and in his usual right field position.

Tonight the Dodgers will give the ball to Julio Urias as the Padres will counter with left hander Clayton Richard. Of course expect to see the annoying all-righty lineup in there again.

The 32-year old left hander is entering his ninth MLB season. Richards is in his second stint with the Padres. He began the season with the Cubs but was released a few weeks ago.

The Padres resigned the veteran and he has pitched well in his reunion with San Diego. This is his fourth start with the Padres this season and sixth appearance. He’s posted a 1.40 ERA and struck out 14 with 9 walks across 19.1 innings pitched. He made 25 appearances out of the bullpen for the Cubs and posted a 6.43 ERA and allowed 14.8 hits per nine innings pitched. Not surprisingly Richard seems more comfortable pitching in San Diego. He played for the Padres from 2009-2013.

He’s made one brief appearance against the Dodgers this year in relief. Overall he is 6-4 with a 3.84 ERA in 16 career starts against the Dodgers. Richard is 2-2 with a 4.36 ERA in 7 career starts at Dodger Stadium. Left handers have clobbered Richard this season to a tune of .311 (14 for 45) with a .706 OPS against. The current Dodgers are hitting .500 (17 for 34) against Richard with an OPS of over 1.000. Adrian Gonzalez is hitting .643 (9 for 14) against Richard with 5 runs driven in.

Urias is making his thirteenth start for the Dodgers and sixteenth appearance. He is 5-2 with a 3.71 ERA. Over 63 frames he has whiffed 70 and walked 25 while allowing 10.0 hits per nine. Urias needs to do better at limiting base runners; however he has pitched a lot better over the last month.

It seems as though everything is starting to come together for young Julio as the phenom develops. Urias is 4-0 with a 1.99 ERA in the month of August. He’s won five consecutive decisions and hasn’t lost since June 12. In his last start he defeated the Cubs by limiting them to just one earned run over 6 innings with 8 strikeouts. Urias has never faced the Padres but is 3-0 with a 2.90 ERA at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers are getting good news on Clayton Kershaw. Apparently he is ready to go out on a rehab assignment. The minor league season is ending this weekend, so this is his last chance to do so. According to the reports, Kershaw will likely pitch for class-A Rancho Cucamonga on Sunday afternoon.

The Dodgers enter today with a 74-59 record and now are back to 2 games ahead of the Giants, who lost on Thursday to the Cubs. The Giants have lost yet again to the Cubs this afternoon by a 2-1 score. That means if the Dodgers can win tonight they’ll move 3 games up on the Giants. The Giants will be at Wrigley Field all weekend with the Cubs.

Go Blue!

      1. I have been thinking of that too, Wondering. It would be great of he could get a hit in his first AB to loosen up.

    1. What does Toles have to do to play?

I would play Toles over Kike, Kike hasn’t don’t a thing.

And Toles should be playing over Joc too.

      1. Agreed.
BTW: Matt Dominguez was DFA’d today. Perhaps we should look into picking him up just in case JT walks and even if he doesn’t walk, Dominguez would be a good backup.
He doesn’t hit much yet but he has power and is an above average fielding 3B.
Just a thought as I don’t see anybody in the system to replace JT.

      1. when we traded for Ruiz, we called up Zaraga. Then when Ruiz actually got here, we DFA’d Zaraga, and since nobody wanted him, he’s back at AAA, but it opened up a 40 man spot

        Now JDL took that spot

          1. Some are on the 40 man and some aren’t.

This 40 man business was one huge reason why JDL didn’t come up sooner.

  1. I wonder if they’re trying to see if Kike wakes up in Sept, for a potential October need. Hence so many chances.

If he continues to be useless vs. lefties, there’s no need for him on the postseason roster. Either way, I’d just roll with Toles (no pun intended) and see if he’s worth keeping in October

    1. Bobby
After all Toles is hitting a thousand against lefties.

Three hits in three at bats.

And I don’t think it is from the same leftie pitcher.

  2. Ken Rosenthal ✔ @Ken_Rosenthal
Sources: #Brewers were team that won claim on #Dodgers’ Puig. Teams made legitimate attempt to complete deal. Braun was part of talks.

  3. Toles has 3 hits in 3 at bats against LH pitching.

Pederson has 4 hits against LH pitching… in 47 AB’s!

Roberts, are you a freaking moron? I mean, I know he isn’t going to do that forever, but 3 for 3 verses 4 for 47? This is felony stupid! Stop it now! If FAZ told you to do that, be your own man and stick it up their….

    FELONY STUPID!

    #IwasRightaboutJOC

    1. FELONY STUPID sometimes is only a misdemeanor.

Toles looked bad in all his at bats and Joc drove in a run against a left hander.

    1. Well so far, I see one huge difference between Toles and Puig. Toles: Bases loaded, 2 outs, hits homerun to win the game. Puig: bases loaded, 2 outs, grounds out.

  4. Yasiel, 1-3. Still swinging early, his main problem. Doesn’t really see the pitches as well as he should. This is the main area that has to be worked. Dodgers must put in the effort to teach him, or trade him for Braun. Dodgers have no star outfielder. We always had a big name out there.

  5. Chavez. Disaster. Urias is robbed again. That kid is going to be something special. He’s got my confidence now. Needs more work. Dodgers need a bullpen overhaul.

  6. Bum I’ve got a two seam palm ball that is virtually in hittable. I can make it move down either direction and take three feet off it whenever I want. It’s like trying to hit a whiffle ball.

De Leon and Urias in the same rotation in The Show. It might be short lived but it’s exciting.

  7. This is one of those games we’ve seen too many times this year. 1 bad pitch by a reliever and 500 guys left on base

Yet I still believe we’ll win

        1. The Dodgers don’t look good today either.

They look like they have no energy tonight.

And I don’t think Howie should lead off.

He hit in a lot of runs last year, when he was hitting second.

  8. Hawkeye
I appreciated everything Libertore did for us, but I think he is burned out.

And that is why I don’t like the pitching rotation built like it has been built.
