Dodgers Turn on The Faucet, Add Righty Tom Koehler On a One-Year Deal

Tom Koehler

Stop the presses! The Dodgers have actually made an acquisition. Reports are indicating that the Dodgers have signed right handed hurler Tom Koehler. The 31-year old Bronx native has signed a one-year contract with the Dodgers but financial details of the deal have not yet been released.

According to reports the Dodgers will use Koehler as a reliever in 2018. Of course Koehler was a starting pitcher his entire career until 2017 when he pitched out of the bullpen for the Blue Jays in Toronto. In 2017 Koehler made 27 appearances last season but only started 13 games. He posted a 6.69 ERA and struck out 62 across 72.2 innings pitched between Miami and Toronto in 2017.

As a starter with the Marlins he was 1-5 with a 7.92 ERA over 55.2 innings pitched last year. He was obviously horrible and the Marlins traded him to the Blue Jays for a minor leaguer and some cash. The Jays moved him to the bullpen and after that he was very effective. He started just one game for the Jays and pitched the rest of his appearances in relief. In his 15 games for the Jays he posted a 2.65 ERA and struck out 18 while walking 6 in 17 innings of work.

Over his career Koehler has a 4.39 ERA and a 6.9 K/9 rate with a 3.7 BB.9 rate in 133 starts and 161 appearances. Koehler struck out 9.5 per nine innings for the Blue Jays last season and 7.7 per nine overall between Miami and Toronto. Koehler should be able to preform in multiple roles as a fungible pitcher. He can pitch in middle relief, as a spot starter, and as a long man as well.

The off-speed specialist has a 1-2 record with a 4.12 ERA in 4 career starts at Dodger Stadium. Against the Dodgers Koehler was 3-3 with a 3.49 ERA in 7 career starts. However he struck out only 23 in 38.2 innings pitched.

Apparently Koehler was non-tendered by the Blue Jays but was projected to earn over 6 million dollars in salary arbitration. Koehler is still eligible for arbitration in 2018, and 2019, but can’t file for free agency until the 2020 season.

    1. Spin rate. Has to be spin rate. Even if it isn’t spin rate, the Dodgers will spin it as spin rate.

It’s spin a while since FAZ has done anything. Koehler’s slider has a lot of sink to it. (see what I did there? Koehler….. sink)

      Ok, I got nothin else.

I saw what you did there there. I nice chuckle for a Saturday morning. We can’t sign Stanton but the Dodgers can throw away 6 big ones. If it doesn’t work out FAZ will not ever speak of it again but rather continue to do it and all the while get no one of value. Oh well.

Is it possible that a player’s next year arbitration numbers could actually go down? I doubt it but I don’t know. If anyone ever didn’t deserve a raise it’s this guy. Projections say $6 million, and that could actually help get us closer to resetting the cap – if Gonzalez and Grandal are traded.

      I am so excited!

This might be my dream trade, Kemp, and no more McCarthy, and Kazmir!

We have that big right hand bat now, to protect Cody in the line up!

This might be a better deal for us in the long run, then Stanton, and his long contract!

I bet Matt will really want to show us Dodger fans, what we have missed!

    1. Not sure wtf Atlanta is thinking, unless the “cash considerations” are enormous. But then, these are the guys that took Olivera off our hands.
