Dodgers Win Battle of the Grand Slams, Beat Brewers 10-8

After another excruciating extra innings game, which the Dodgers won last night on a Cody Bellinger home run, both the Dodgers and the Brewers were hoping for something different under the afternoon sun today.  Nobody had any idea what the baseball gods had in store for them today.

The game didn’t start very efficiently, and was actually pretty sloppy. Both starting pitchers were done after just four innings, and it was up to the bullpens to stave off runs. That didn’t happen. Not by a long shot.

Dodgers starter Rich Hill‘s main weapon, the curveball, wasn’t sharp today. As a result, he was over 90 pitches after just four innings. In the bottom of the first, Hill was the victim of an Enrique Hernandez throwing error which led to a Brewer score, and he later wild pitched a run home. He also gave up a solo home run for the Brewers third run.

The Dodgers scored early on an Adrian Gonzalez RBI double in the first, and a Yasmani Grandal ribbie in the third.

By the  fifth inning it was a brand-new ball game. The starting pitchers were both gone, it was up to the bullpens, and the Brewers were ahead 3-2.

In the sixth, the Dodgers pulled off a double steal to take second and third with Yasiel Puig at bat. The gamble paid off when the very next pitch went to the backstop and Chris Taylor brought home the Dodgers’ third run, which tied the game. Puig followed on the next pitch with a base hit to left that brought home Kike Hernandez and the go ahead run.

Chris Hatcher got two innings today. He pitched a scoreless sixth, but ran into big time trouble in the seventh. Hatcher walked three batters and balked in the inning. He left with the bases-loaded.

In came Josh Fields, and out went the baseball on an immediate grand slam by Travis Shaw. Just to put a cherry on top, Fields gave up a solo home run to the next batter. In less than two minutes the Brewers scored five runs and went from losing 4-3 to being up 8-4. Dodgers Twitter went ape-shite, but luckily the boys in blue maintained focus, and just kept plugging away.

In the eighth Puig picked up an RBI while being robbed of a hit by the Brewers’ shortstop. The boys were down 5-8.

The Dodgers caught some breaks (walk, error, PH single) in the ninth to get right back into the game. Cody Bellinger came up with bases loaded and one out. He went to a full count, and walked to bring in a run. Suddenly it was Brewers 8-6, one out, and the bases were still loaded.

Then Chris Taylor happened! VA-VOOOOM!  Taylor belted a grand slam to deep center field that put the Dodgers up 10-8.

Dodgers Twitter again went ape-shite. This time in a good way.

Manager Dave Roberts declared before the game that Kenley Jansen was not available today after two innings and 33 pitches last night, but the skipper changed his mind and sent the big man out to save today’s game after all. Jansen rose to the challenge, shut down the stunned Brewers, and saved the win.

Dodgers Win 10-8!

Logan Forsythe sat out the game with right hip flexor tightness. Stay tuned.

What will the boys do for an encore? Kenta Maeda will take the mound in an 11 a.m. PST start tomorrow morning.

Rich Hill went four innings with 3 hits, 3 runs, 2 ER, 4 walks, 5 Ks, 1 HR   ERA 4.15

  1. Wow, that was impressive. At 8-4, i told myself, oh well, Fields was due to have a bad day, and went about to do my errands. I sure missed a good comeback

  2. We’re going to need bullpen backups for the series finale. I think Kenley should be ok as he’s not pitched much during the recent winning streak.

Bellinger was great showing patience and not chasing and trying to be a hero. And Taylor, what can I say, working back from an 0-2 count. Great win!

  3. Let’s not forget that the worst pickup in history, Brandon Morrow, looked really good again today.

    1. I don’t think Morrow has been the target of much ire. At least not on amongst the group here. I think most of the angst is directed at Romo and Hatcher.

  4. Nice comeback win with a little luck involved. Booted infield grounder helped the rally stay alive. Taylor really crushed that pitch. Old friend Jerry Sands signs a minor league deal with the Giants. Must be the day for slams, Pujols # 600 a slam. And a no no to boot….what a day to be a baseball fan

    1. I am Artie.

I’m still wondering how this Milwaukee team has managed to stay over .500. They look awful to me. Small sample, I know, but they have made a lot of stupid mistakes in these two games. A team of squirrels that don’t play defense. Chicago is going to win that Division and I say they do it easily.

    2. Artieboy,

      Really good point!

The point is that the team came back, and won that game!

And they are having a pretty good road trip.

  5. It will probably surprise no one that my curiosity took me to an odd place on the Internet yesterday. Day before, I was complaining (to myself) that I hadn’t much appetite and food just didn’t taste as good as it used to. I attributed that to getting old, deterioration of the taste buds and many years of eating the same foods. Then I had a weird thought, which is fairly common for me. The food seemed to quit tasting good just about the time I moved from Coastal California to Southern Nevada, from 27 feet of altitude to about 2800 feet. I wondered if altitude made a difference in food taste, so I researched that on the Internet. Turns out there has been quite a bit of research on that subject, much of it by the airlines because people complain about the taste of airline food. And the general conclusion is that foods usually taste better at lower altitudes. Most airlines pressurize their planes to the equivalent of about 2400 feet altitude, not much different than where I presently live. The researchers found that different foods reacted differently to the change in altitude, sweets being less affected than sours or spicey food at the different altitudes. Their theory is the cause is denser air and higher moisture content near sea level enhances the smell and chemical reaction in the mouth. Now I feel better, it’s not all my fault my hamburgers and barbecued ribs just don’t taste as good. I’ll sleep better knowing that….

        1. My wife and I have been discussing moving back to the OC. The areas we really want to live in are places we can no longer afford.

  6. There are many changes in sensory perception with aging Jonah. As you age, the way your senses (hearing, vision, taste, smell, touch) give you information about the world changes, especially after the age of 60. Our senses become less sharp. I’ve found living at 4600′ helps me manage lower altitudes more easily. But, I’ve also noticed interest in many things, including foods, isn’t what it usta was, especially in the last 4-5 years. I’m 69 now. I’m comfortable in the slow lane.

    1. Badger

Are you saying that I only have a few years to go, before everything takes he big dive?

I haven’t had an In and Out burger for a long time, maybe I better try to enjoy some, before everything takes a dive!

      1. Sticking my nose in again,,,, MJ, that is good advice for anyone, anywhere, at any age. Live your life like there’s no tomorrow, because there just might not be one….

    2. Excuse me, Badger, but given that you don’t even eat any real man food, I’m surprised that you could even tell….

      1. I see your point … and raise you this – Mike Tyson is, and Albert Einstein was, vegetarian. I am very much like both of them. I have Einstein’s hair and Tyson’s good looks.

          1. Look at the bright side: You don’t have to worry about how your food tastes, if you’re lucky, you won’t taste it all….

          2. I had organic multigrain pancakes with pecans, real maple syrup and Amy’s vegan sausage this morning. Tasted pretty good to me.

          3. World’s oldest person dies at 117.

Eating delicious things is a key to my longevity,” said Okawa who loved ramen noodles and beef stew, as well as hashed beef and rice.

She ate some cake to celebrate her 117th birthday in early March, the officials said.

      2. Jonah

        That is funny!

But remember even In and Out, makes a type of veggie burger, except there is no meat paddy, or even a fake veggie paddy!

          1. Jonah

I think Wolf would just go to In and Out, and ask for a burger, in Animal style.

In and Out must have had Wolf in mind, when they created a burger, in Animal style.

          2. He wouldn’t have “asked”, it would have been a hostile takeover for ALL the burgers.

        1. Jonah

I think the key to life is moderation.

Eat, drink, what ever one wants, but just do it, in moderation!

      1. I didn’t either Bear. I was living pretty fast for several years trying to fit it all in. I’ve slowed down quite a bit since the end of the 80’s. Climbed a few 14ers after 60, but now I just walk and ride my bike some. Gotta keep moving.

        1. Well we made it this far. And I have never been one to give up. Had a couple of close calls but survived. I keep on the go as much as possible, and fishing is a lot of fun up here. Altitude makes walking a chore. But you do what you need to. I never thought touring a battleship would be a workout, but we went on the Iowa the last time I was in LA. Climbing up and down the super structure and all those decks was a stress test. But very informative. Got a little idea what my dad must have felt like on the Nevada before Pearl Harbor. And those big guns are HUGE.

    1. He’s similar to Calhoun in that “his best position is batters box” according to scouts.

      DJ Peters is also mashing.

Perhaps most interesting is Rosenthal reporting that the Marlins may be willing to trade Yelich, Ozuna and others to collect prospects and offset debt in light of the coming team sale.

      Stanton has a full no-trade.

      1. Their catcher, Realmuto, seems to me to be a worthwhile target, but I expect the know-it-alls will say we don’t need a catcher. Maybe not right now, but trouble is always just around the bend, and it would open up some trade possibilities with Grandal who isn’t on everyone’s welcome list. I think it is always wise to buy quality when you can get it, whether you desperately need it right now or not.
No Stanton and you can high lite that.

        1. I like Realmuto and he has been a pain in the ass to the Dodgers. We do have some talented catchers in the minors. Farmer is at OKC right now and doing very well. Smith and Ruiz not far behind.

        2. Jonah

He is a pretty good hitting catcher, but for some reason, people in baseball have said, that the Marlins don’t want to trade him.

Even though they are talking about the Marlins, wanting to get cheaper, and selling off players.

But for a guy that isn’t a baseball fanatic, you know a lot more, then most people would think!

      2. Rios has played 3rd and 1st. He has been a decent defender at 1st with only 1 error. He has 9 over at the hot corner. 10 homers and 40 RBI’s there at Tulsa. Batting .332 with a OBP of .359 and a 920 OPS. Still at AA ball, so will need some seasoning at AAA first, but he is not going to bump Bellinger at LA> Might be a good candidate for trade fodder. He is 23 now.

      3. Bluto

I wish Yelich hit rightie, instead of leftie, because he is a pretty good all around, baseball player.

  7. Today’s line up…Forsythe, Seager, Taylor, Gonzalez, Bellinger, Grandal, Barnes, Hernandez, Maeda…..this day in Dodger History….1964..Koufax strikes out 12 and throws his 3rd no hitter, and only one on the road to beat the Phillies 3-0 1972…Koufax, Robinson and Campanella’s Jersey’s are retired. Ramon Martinez strikes out 18 Braves in a 6-0 win to tie Koufax’s team record. Koufax did it twice.

  8. I watched the LBSU Dirtbags game against Texas on ESPN last night. It was tied 3-3 and they had a runner on 1st. The pitcher threw wild over to 1st and the runner tried to go all the way to 3rd, he was out by 6 feet. That was the 2nd out. He should have stayed at 2nd. The next batter hit a ball that rolled under the left fielders glove and all the way to the wall. He was at 3rd and the coach waved him in to try for a inside the park HR, he was tagged out inches from the plate. SS made a bare hand grab and throw of the relay. Exciting game, they ended up losing 5-3 in 12 innings.

  9. Off to watch the game and then going to see Wonder Woman. Saw the previews when I went to see Pirates last night. Looks pretty good. Linda Carter she ain’t, but how many are?

    1. I could have used a picture in her uniform but I like this one better. Yum-yum. But not for veggies like Badger…

      1. Jonah

I saw Lynda Carter in person at a pro Tennis match, in Palm Springs.

She was only a foot away, from where we were sitting.

She was a really beautiful woman, at that time.

And I am sure she has probably aged, quite well.

She was tall like most pageant women are.

She is 64 now, I believe.

        1. Did you know this song was written especially for Linda (she wasn’t McCartney yet…) when she was 3 or 4 years old? Her father was a lawyer who had a client who was a song writer, and he had him write this song for her birthday party in 1946 or 47. Buddy clark recorded it several years later and it became a Top Ten Hit.

          1. There are two Vanessa Williams, you know. The Miss America/Actress/Singer born 3/18/1963 and Vanessa Williams, actress only, 5/12/1963
One is black, the other is half black…

        2. Famke Jansen, Christie Brinkley, Vanessa Williams, Michelle Pfeiffer, Olivia Wilde, Beyoncé …. all vegan.

          1. I’ve read Steven Ambrose’s “Undaunted Courage”, the history of Lewis’ and Clark’s epic journey from Virginia to the Pacific. He quotes extensively Clark’s Diary and you really wouldn’t believe how much meat their party ate, 15 to 20 pounds per day per man. Killing game for food was a full time job. After their journey, the President arranged for several Indian Chiefs to come to Washington at government expense. Innkeepers and shopkeepers reported the Indians ate as much as 30 pounds each a day. I really have trouble believing all that but I can send you the Ebook if you want to read it.

          2. Badger

I think Linda McCartney came out as a vegan in public, much earlier, then some of those other women.

I don’t recognize the first woman though.

I am a big Vanessa Williams fan, but I didn’t know she was a vegan.

She was a very pretty woman, and she still is, for her age.

          3. As a matter of fact, I have it in hardback too, if you’d rather have that. All my reading is on ebooks anymore.

          4. Jonah

It isn’t that I don’t trust you, I thought maybe you were just teasing me, or testing me.

      1. I met Sparky Anderson just before he died.

His sister always went through my line, at the grocery store.

He was visiting her, that week.

  10. Romo is one sad assed pitcher, isn’t he? No matter, home runs by Taylor, Agon, and Bellinger and we’re right back in it….

    1. Uh, nope, Taylor, Bellinger and Grandal STRIKE OUT! Gonzo walked,,,was a rally…….

    2. Jonah

I was just thinking that about Romo too

When he allowed that HR, he made it harder, for the Dodgers to come back.

Our relievers have given up four HRs, on this road trip.

Stripling gave up his first HR against the Cards when Fowler hit one out, to win that game.

And Fields gave up two HRs yesterday, and the one from Romo today.

But Stripling and Fields has been pretty good, unlike Romo.
