Dodgers Win Series against Rockies

Justin Turner

The Dodgers played the Rockies today with Rich Hill taking on Tyler Anderson. Anderson a left-hander normally would be an issue for the Dodgers. But lately he has been having issues. The Dodgers went to their all right handed lineup to take on Anderson. In the first inning the Dodgers got started as Justin Turner roped a single. Manny Machado then doubled him in to make the score 1-0. David Freese roped a single. On the play Manny Machado went home and ended up scoring on a play at the plate in which the catcher dropped the ball.

In the bottom of the first, Charlie Blackmon led off the game with a homerun. The score was 2-1 Dodgers. In the top of the 2nd, Kike Hernandez homered and the score was 3-1. With two outs, Brian Dozier walked. Then Justin Turner hit a ball that Matt Holliday misplayed and Dozier scored and the score was 4-1. In the bottom of the fourth, DJ LeMahieu hit a fly that Matt Kemp misplayed and ended up with a triple.  He ended up scoring on a ground out. In the top of the 5th, Matt Kemp led off with a single. David Freese then walked. CT3 hit a double and scored two runs. The score was 6-2 Dodgers.

Tyler Anderson only lasted into the third inning for the Rockies. In the top of the sixth, Cody Bellinger pinch hit for Dozier and walked. Justin Turner hit a two run shot and the Dodgers led 8-2. In the bottom of the sixth, Charlie Blackmon doubled. DJ LeMahieu doubled to score a run for the Rockies. That ended Rich Hill’s day. Pedro Baez came in having pitched well of late and gave up a two run shot to a slumping Nolan Arenado. The score was now 8-5 Dodgers. Caleb Ferguson pitched a scoreless 7th inning.

In the bottom of the 8th, Ferguson gave up a homer to Charlie Blackmon and the score was 8-6. The Dodgers had opportunities to add more runs but couldn’t.  Now this game felt like it was up for grabs. Kenta Maeda came in and walked Arenado. He was able to strike out Trevor Story and get Matt Holliday to fly out to get out of that inning. In the top of the 9th, Kike Hernandez led off with a triple. Alex Verdugo would end up singling him in and the Dodgers took a 9-6 lead. Maeda pitched the 9th and gave up a lead off single to Ian Desmond.

Scott Alexander then came in to try and finish off the game. Gerardo Parra fouled out with Alex Verdugo making a great play. Chris Iannetta then flied out to Puig who made a great play. Matt Valaika then came in pinch hit with Charlie Blackmon on deck representing the tying run. Valaika ropped a line drive to center field that was caught by Chris Taylor and the Dodgers won. Dodgers are 0.5 back of first and 1 game behind the Cardinals for the second wild card. On to Cincy.

  1. True Blue, there have been lots of “If onlies” this year, that is for sure. Lots of cow Frisbees in the pasture.

Lots of runs, enough to win. Still lots of wasted opportunities. 3-18 RISP, 20 LOB.

Hill barely lasts 5 innings. The bullpen put on their big boy pants this weekend, and did a great job, led by Kenta Maeda. Baez, however still wearing his diapers.

JT remains hot. I was afraid the Lefty Lineup would tank again. Very bold move by DR to start the same lineup as yesterday. Roberts just got lucky and faced Tyler Anderson on an off day.

  2. Love watching Hill pitch. Wasn’t optimal, but Coors is just a dreadful place.

    Just win the series.

The team should be, as most others here imply, much better. Alas, they are not.

  3. Still not impressed.

Most of the moves are breaking the right way for the Dodgers this year (Muncy, Kemp, most of the starting rotation back healthy since August, Ryu pitching well, Buehler pitching well, Jansen not as dominant but not bad, getting Machado without surrendering premium prospects, getting Dozier and unloading Forsythe, getting Freese for next to nothing, etc.), and yet we are still in second place. And we still have the largest payroll.

If either the D-Backs or the Rockies had gotten half the breaks we have, they would be running away with the division.

    1. Yep….and now we find out Dozier is playing with a bad wheel. Freese has played very well since coming over, Machado not living up to the hype, Madson has made a few appearances and has not looked all that good. Axford is out. The best thing about the Dozier trade was unloading Forshyte. Probably one of the worst pickups on FAZ’s resume. The one thing this team, which is loaded with talent, has not managed to do all year is mount a long winning streak. 5 is the most I think. Their next 7 are not cake walks either. The Reds, who swept them in LA, have nothing to lose, a decent offense, but little pitching. The Cardinals on the other hand are fighting for their playoff lives and are going to be in there kicking and biting trying to win. The Dodgers need their A game the next 7 days. Then it is SD and Colorado at home, and the D-Backs and Giants on the road. 19 games left.

I thought yesterday’s game was an ugly game to watch.

      I am not impressed either.

And we still have those four games against the Cards, and believe it or not, the Reds took two from the Cards, not to long after we were swept, by the Cards.

This is a season of mediocrity in the National League, especially in the west.

And because of that, we should make the post season, but I don’t have much confidence, that we will go far beyond that.

  4. A couple of things, first, Kemp did not misplay that fly ball, he lost it in a brutal sun. Second, Dozier revealed he has been playing with a bad knee all year..WTF??? did they not catch that on the medical reports? Baez gave up the first run he had given up in 10 innings. So he did a good job minimalizing the damage and one of those runs was charged to Hill, who for 5 innings did a good job, but then put the team in trouble by getting no outs in the 6th. They beat a pitcher that they should hammer all day long. Anderson is the epitome of a mediocre pitcher. Nothing is easy for this team, at least in Cincy, Jansen is back. Manny Machado is not playing like the same guy he was in Baltimore. In a hitters park like Coors he should be raking, and he did not do that. Roberts all righty line up, like his all lefty line up, is a joke. Muncy hits lefty’s better than he does righty’s. He was right to have Puig on the bench since it has been a while since Yasiel has hit lefty’s well. Now that Dozier has said he has a bum wheel, maybe they will sit his weak ass bat down. Barnes still can’t hit a lick, but his defense yesterday was outstanding….no passed balls. Congratulations to Kyle Farmer on his first MLB triple yesterday…..guy may not be a great catcher, but you have got to love his bat.

    1. I agree about the pitching especially in yesterday’s game.

The pitchers almost all had eras over 4 and five, in yesterday’s game.

I like Farmer, but that was aided by Matt Holiday playing in left, most outfielders catch that ball.

I don’t know why he is not good enough to play catcher in the majors, but I would at least give him a look, with our catcher situation.

But most of the choices the management are making, are not impressive, along with the results.

      1. I don’t get the Farmer usage either.

His framing, which is quite important evidently, has improved and he’s versatile. Barnes’ framing is decidedly not at Grandal’s level.
