Dodgers Wrap up First Half, Friedrich vs. Maeda in Finale

Kenta Maeda

The Dodgers (50-40) recorded their 50th win of the season with a 4-3 win on Saturday afternoon over the Padres.  The winning run scored on a botched double play take-out slide from Justin Turner. The play was reviewed but ultimately the call stood. Brandon McCarthy pitched well only allowing 3 runs on 3 hits, but as usual was yanked after only 5 innings.

The Dodger bullpen had to come in again and save their bacon, tossing another 4 effective innings to secure the win. The Dodgers lead the series 2-1. Left hander Adam Liberatore has now pitched 24 consecutive scoreless innings which has set a new Dodger record. Who would have thought that the savior of the Dodger’s first half of the season would be the bullpen? What an incredible turnaround.

Its standard lineup today for the first half finale with Thompson in center field and Scott Van Slyke in left field. Howie Kendrick bats lead-off and plays second base. The Dodgers will resume play on Friday night in Arizona. The home run derby is tomorrow at 5, and the all-star game is Tuesday night. I can’t believe it’s already the all-star break. Time really flies when you’re having fun. Right? Just humor me there guys.

On a side note, I’ll be going to the game today with my girl, so if you’re sitting anywhere near reserved level 55 row F, come say hi. Oscar will have the recap and thanks for following along with us through the entire first half. LADR will continue to provide great Dodger coverage and a place to meet and talk Dodger baseball throughout the break and the second half of the season.

Go Blue!

  1. I never considered the “traditional” end of the first half to be the AS Break. It’s just not accurate. How can anyone compare the stats of the first half with the second half if the number of games aren’t equal(81-81)?
Just another of the many “rules” is baseball that doesn’t make any sense and yet baseball flows through my veins like my AB blood.

      1. Nice start for Maeda but it took 15 pitches. At this rate, knowing that 100 pitches is the absolute maximum(except for CK), he won’t come out for the 7th inning. DR won’t allow it and since we don’t have another game until Friday, maybe not such a bad thing.

  2. 50 wins feels good. 10 games over would feel even better.

    McCarthy kinda sucked yesterday.

Rest for as many as possible would be great, especially the bullpen.

Coleman last 30 days ERA 6.52, WHIP 1.967. DFA the guy and bring up a Long Reliever PLEASE!!!!!

Rameriz should have gotten a Red Card (MLB Ejection) for his flop yesterday while pretending to be slid into at second base.

    1. Urias to the pen now in minors. Bring him up in a few weeks. DeLeon up, start formulating 6 man. One at a time dump those in the pen that are failing.

      Stabilicon. That fits.

  3. DR continues to put Turner in the three hole against LHP. Does he NOT know Turner isn’t hitting lefties this year(.188BA). Matter of fact, I believe in his career he hits RHP better than LHP. I haven’t kooked it up so I may be wrong. Today he’s 2 for 2 in K’s.

  4. Maeda strikes out the side. Anyone want to bet DR pinch hits for him. He’s due up 3rd this inning. Beautiful game for him though, 6 innings, one mistake, a total of 2 hits and K’s 12. Nice Nice Nice.

    1. I was wrong, I admit it. It’ll be the first time since June 20th that a pitcher, other than CK has gone into the 7th inning.

  5. Roberts has reasons for doing what he does. We may not always understand, but he is the manager. He let Maeda pitch 7 innings today. Let’s hope Jansen can finish the game.

    1. Hmmm. I wonder what reasons that could be? No doubt our BP has been overtaxed for the first half.

  6. I think Maeda gave us just what the doctor ordered. Now the boys can get a few days off and get ready for the second half.

Nice site today (so far) in here.

  7. We have 5 of the next 8 days off. We should be well rested for the Wash StL games. Arizona has a defeated look about them, but at home against LA? – they can probably get up for it.

    1. Badger
      What happened with the Giants?

They should have got up to play the Giants, in there homestand or in Frisco.

  8. The bull pen has been overworked. Or has it? In performance quality there has been little evidence. Now there are four or five days of rest and the starters are getting healthy. When it comes to the bullpen somebody or somebodies have gotten less recognition than he/she/they deserve,

    1. Belt is the Allstar.

He finally had a put togther a decent two years, with out getting injured.

But he wouldn’t be my Allstar.

I saw Lamb drop a pop fly, that allowed one of the Giants, to hit a two run HR.

And that was the difference in the final score.

      1. The last spot came down to Belt or Lamb, that is why I asked. Jake Lamb. Not good defensively, but look at his offensive stats. He leads Belt in home runs, RBIs, SLG and OPS.

giants best in baseball at the All Star break. I knew they were good. Didn’t think they were this good.

  9. I get sick about hearing about the Giants, but these broadcasters brought up a good point.

The Giants often shorten there swings with two strikes, especially when runners are in scoring position.

They literally just try to get there bat on the ball, and try to get a little hit, just over the infield, to hit in runs, or to get a hit with two strikes.

And most of there players, do this all the time.

    It isn’t just luck.

I don’t understand why the Dodgers don’t do stuff like this.

I know that Agone try’s to do this, but no one else.
