Julio Urias and Andrew Toles Return For Dodgers

Julio Urias vs. Mets

The Dodgers are finally beginning to reverse the trend of bad baseball decisions. The club announced that outfielder Andrew Toles was recalled as Chris Taylor was optioned back to Oklahoma City. The Dodgers are making a move that makes sense. Taylor couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat and Toles was hitting over .300 during his first stint with the big club. Not only that but look who’s dropped to sixth in the batting order? That’s right, it’s .161 hitting Josh Reddick. Toles is in the starting lineup today as well playing in left field and batting eighth.

The Dodgers will give the ball to 20-year old Julio Urias, and the club badly needs him to give them a solid 7 innings and keep them in the game. He doesn’t have to be dominating, just turn in a quality start. Please. Urias is making his eleventh start and thirteenth MLB appearance. He’s 3-2 with a 4.41 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 51 innings pitched. They are going to have to do better than last night’s 11-1 fiasco. That was ugly to watch.

Julio Urias-3-2 vs. Anthony DeSclafani-7-1

Game Time – 10:10 AM – TV-SNLA

The Reds will counter with right hander Anthony DeSclafani. The 26-year old is 7-1 this year for the Reds with a 3.10 ERA in 13 starts. He’s struck 69 and walked 18 while only allowing 27 earned runs. He’s struck out 7.9 per nine and has a 3.72 FIP. He is 1-2 with a 2.37 ERA in 3 career starts against the Dodgers. The boys in blue are hitting just .190 against DeSclafani.

The Giants play tonight at San Francisco against the Mets as Noah Syndergaard will counter Jeff Samardzija on Sunday night baseball. The Dodgers remain a half game behind in the NL West race. A Dodger win and a Giant loss today would mean the Dodgers reclaiming first place.

  1. Watching Urias in this first inning – he looks a bit thick around the middle for a 20 year old. But then, I guess Fernando looked similar.

  2. Pitchers come in all shapes. Urias does not look like a 20 year old that has not filled out yet. Just give us a quality start.

  3. At least Urias can get through the first without giving up a crooked number. He should start every 5 days. Forget the infirm (McCarthy and Anderson) and the mediocre (Norris).

  4. Pilates kid. And lay off the postres. You look like a young Stay Puft.

52 through 3. He should get 5. Which appears to be the bar for Dodger starters.

  5. As an LA native who has lived in Sacramento for many years, I have had to pay attention to NorCal baseball teams. Josh Reddick was a very streaky player for the A’s – a good defender with pretty good strike zone discipline, but very streaky. He is in a bad streak now – will he recover in time to do the Dodgers any good this year?

    Player A
    10 for 62, 8 R, 0 RBI, 1 2B, 0 HR, 1 SB, .401 OPS
    Player B
    15 for 81, 8 R, 6 RBI, 2 2B, 1 3B, 0 HR, 1 SB, .465 OPS

Player A is Josh Reddick since joining the Dodgers
Player B is Carl Crawford in 2016 before being DFA’s.

      1. FAZ admit he made a LOUSY trade?????? Impossible……no way they DFA a guy he says the fans are going to love………..Because of some problems with the stream, I was forced at times to watch the Reds broadcast…..The Reds lead announcer was not too impressed with Friedman’s free agent signings. But he was far less impressed with the trades……he is one of ESPN’s national game announcers. He said Friedman’s trades were and I quote ” Head Scratching” unquote…….very insightful

        1. I wondered where ESPN found those clowns. Not that I disagree, but there seems to be a bias against LA at that network. Bring Miller and Morgan back to Sunday Night.

  6. I believe Urias and Stripling are in the rotation. Though I doubt either would pitch in the post season.

Good outing for the kid. He quieted the thundering juggernaut Small Red bats.

    1. Urias’ start has been described as a “spot start”. Right now the Dodgers don’t have a regular rotation. The only constants have been Maeda and Kazmir and Kaz hasn’t exactly been consistent himself.

Right now, assuming Anderson will go out with his finger owee, Norris is the 3rd starter and after that, ???

      1. Stripling has started 3 games this month and done … OK I guess. 5,7 and 5 innings. Urias has 3 starts in August too. He’s thrown 96 innings. Don’t you think he can throw at least 30 more innings? That’s 5 more starts, why wouldn’t they be with the big club? I’m making an assumption here but it seems clear to me that Stripling and Urias are better options than Anderson, Norris and McCarthy.

        1. Nothing to argue with here.

Start Urias, we can tell quickly if he has it and the bullpen is used to long outings if he doesn’t. The kid looked awfully good today!

Kershaw, Hill, Maeda, Urias/Kazmir could get it done. Just make sure Maeda gets five days rest, minimum during playoffs, between starts.

        2. 30 innings would be somewhere between 5 and 10 starts if I might add something snarky into the conversation.

  7. Nice game for the kid. Well pitched and the 6th inning was impressive. Utley got them off on the right foot, and Toles speed got them a run later. Seager is as hot as they come, and Gonzo kept his streak going. Me, I drop Reddick to the 8 hole. He obviously is totally lost.

  8. Good Job FAZ!!! Back in first where Dodgers belong.

Who will join me in a big “Hip Hip Hooray” for FAZ?

Good job FAZ for telling Roberts to give Urias a “spot start” and to start Toles in left!!

    1. If he had started Howie in left and Toles in right, we probably would have scored more runs. Why play Reddick at all?

  9. Sight or vision?

    What do you have?

Most of you have sight, but are blind when it come to vision.

Do you really think all of this will stay the same? That’s what your eyes trick you into believing.

    Vision? What’s that, you say?

    Rigggggggggggghtttttttttttttttt!

    1. Sure, you don’t know what is going to happen and it seems that lately, the worst teams have been the teams that have actually succeeded in the post-season.

On the other hand, there are some templates for success that have worked in the past. One of the best is the twin aces template – think Koufax/Drysdale, Johnson/Schilling, McClain/Lolich, etc. etc. So the Dodgers have had Kershaw/Greinke – and they didn’t make it. Now they have Kershaw and the 12 dwarves, and Kershaw is gone.

Some teams beat their opponents into submission. The Dodgers can’t do that either. The Royals did something really different – they won mostly on the strength of 3 closer-caliber relievers. The Dodgers don’t have that either.

So tell me – do you see a pathway to a Series victory in 2016 given the current roster/ If Kershaw does come back full strength, who else do you like as a starter?

The Dodgers in the post-season have Maeda as #2
      The Cubs have Lester
      The Nationals have Strasberg
      The Giants have Cueto

        1. you’re an optimist
          he’s never been a #2
he hasn’t even thrown a pitch for the Dodgers
compare his career to Lester, Strasberg and Cueto

  10. BTW, I’m glad to hear the Reds announcers talked bad about Friedman. The Brennemans and Jeff Brantley are among the stupidest announcers I have ever listened to… and I hear them a lot – they are our home team!

That gives me hope, because if they say it, it’s most likely wrong. What a bunch of dunces!

But, if you like what they say, I guess you must be one too!

You should have heard what they said about Epstien last time the Cubs were in town. According to them, he’s just lucky!

    1. I feel sorry for you. I couldn’t listen to those two dunces on a regular basis. I have to admit the “Hated Ones” have much better announcers.

      1. Far from a dunce there box head. Just because I do not agree with you two does not mean I am stupid and I would match my IQ with yours anyday

        1. What made you think I was talking about you? Was talking about Red’s announcers.

          What is that IQ anyways?

          1. My mistake, I thought you were referring to me and I apologize…..you think the Reds announcers are bad, try listening to the Rockies.

  11. I have to respond to Michael Norris in last thread.

Michael Norris: “Why even offer Anderson a QO last winter? You knew the guy would not get a better offer than the 15.6 guaranteed”.

Been over this before, but, why not? $15.6M/1 yr

    2015 Anderson, 31 starts, 18 quality starts, 180 IP, 3.69 ERA

I wonder if any of the teams who signed the below pitchers wish they had given Anderson $20M/1 yr instead of the who they signed? I bet they REALLY wish they could get a Mulligan.

    Wei-Yin Chen, $80M/5 yrs, 4.99 ERA
Zack Greinke, $206M/6 yrs, 4.21 ERA
Yovani Gallardo, $22M/2 yrs, 5.18 ERA
Mike Leake, $80M/5 yrs, 4.56 ERA
David Price, $217M/7 yrs, 4.19 ERA
    Jeff Samardzija, $$90M/5 yrs, 4.24

OK, maybe Baltimore with Gallardo is indifferent.

Michael Norris: “Hell they could have brought Nicasio back”

WHAT? Nicasio? You mean: 2016 Nicasio, 12 starts, 4 quality starts, 4.72 ERA, 1.41 WHIP

If GM Norris makes that acquisition the NORRISophobes here would be calling for your head.

Michael Norris: “We are beating a DEAD HORSE here. You and others like the plan, and that’s ok. There are some pretty die hard fans out here who tend to disagree. Only at the end of September will we know who was right”.

Not that we REALLY like the plan, Pretend GM Boxout7, would have really liked Dodgers to sign Greinke, David Price, the two “studs” Samardija and Cueto and traded for Hamels and Sale.” Just being realistic. dodgerpatch nailed it, “if you understand that any major league team doesn’t have unlimited resources in perpetuity, then the non-signings and the signings make sense”.

End of September/October proves nothing, unless Dodgers win. Playoffs are a crap shoot. I would rather be lucky in playoffs than good. Boxout7, taking pushup bets on who will win World Series. You pick winner, I bet you’re wrong. Any takers? Badger, double or nothing on our 2016 Gordon/Kendrick WAR bet?

    1. Just because I do not agree with what they have done does not make me wrong. What have they gotten for their 15.6 million? 4 innings. As far as Nicasio, he has been pretty solid THIS year, and that is what we are talking about. Just because you and Mark do not think us commoners have any clue, does not give you the ok to just ridicule everything someone says. You guys just cannot help your selves, someone says something you find wrong and against the FAZ you guys continue to belittle. Shows a definite lack of character on your part. Sure, I might be wrong and to tell the truth I do not care, but like everyone on here I am entitled to state my opinion without being belittled by someone who has not a clue who I am. I personally think the FO has made a string of bad trades. I think their free agent acquisition’s leave a lot to be desired. I know the Dodgers do not have unlimited resources, but neither are they poor. You still have guys thinking small market in a big market. And just exactly have either of these clowns won? Nothing. 1 world series appearance 8 years ago for Freidman….that’s it, no championships. They have shown they do know how to stockpile good players and get the most out of their farm systems, I will give them that, but neither has won anything…

  12. Stripling is at AAA. He cannot come back for 10 days unless somebody is put on the disabled list. Put Anderson on the list and bring up Stripling. Anderson is scheduled to pitch the last game against the Giants.

By the way McCarthy did look good the first two games when he came back. However, there is something wrong. I do not think he should pitch again this year until they are 100 % sure he is ok. He could be fine next year. Also, I think he could be a very good relief pitcher. Anderson, another story. I hope he does not pitch this year or next.

  13. Playoffs are a crapshoot; just ask Golden State. Did they let any of their best players walk? No, they went out and tried to get stronger. Because the great teams are relentless.

Thank you FAZ, for finally starting a pitcher who doesn’t suck and moving America’s Out off the cleanup spot. What good lads you are!

    1. Well, Golden State did let Barnes, Bogut, Ezeli and Speights move on, but, Durant is a big big addition. Don’t know who will play center for them, besides small ball Draymond Green.

Interestingly, the Warriors were Champions in 1975 and not again until 2015.

      Go Lakers!!!!

  14. The Arrogant One, still can’t not, can’t not be negative. so sad. Obviously a big man with a little man.
Still thinks that he can read minds like a prophet.

“But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.” Deuteronomy 18:20.

  15. It’s a good thing I am not arrogant, negative or a prophet!

Of course, if you want to quote the Bible, I have a couple of passages that certainly apply to you:

“Though you pound a fool in a mortar with a pestle along with crushed grain, Yet his foolishness will not depart from him.” – Proverbs 27:22

“Stop judging, so that you won’t be judged.” – Matthew 7:1

    1. No Mark, you are not arrogant, but you never miss an opportunity to put someone down either if they do not agree with you or the plan….

      1. Michael,

BOB laid a personal attack on me. I gave it back.

I have several people who disagree with me and THE PLAN… but they have laid out their argument and maybe they are right… time will tell. I VALUE people who disagree when they can present a cogent argument. I run my business on that. We have meetings where I say something and someone disagrees openly and I end up agreeing.

It is all about the facts and the argument!

        1. I can buy that. But there are times you go a little over the top. There are ways of getting your point across without making someone look small. But this is not a business. It is a blog, and that is always about opinions about a game, that honestly, some people are going to come up with some really stupid ideas. Better to just let it be water off a ducks back then to attack all the time. That’s the way I try to do things. And believe me, there are a lot of people out there who do not agree with stuff I say sometimes.
