Julio Urias Rights Dodgers’ Ship, Wins 4-0 Shutout

After being thoroughly trounced by the Reds over the past two days, the Dodgers, perhaps, would like nothing better than to leave Cincinnati under the cover of darkness. On the other hand, they might be chomping at the bit to show the Reds (and the Giants) what they can do when they bring a real pitcher to the game. They showed up, and they brought young Julio Urias with them.

Here’s how it turned out.

1st inning
Chase Utley started the game by planting a lead off home run in the RF seats. 1-0

Urias dropped an excellent pick off move for a big out here…

3nd inning  1-0
Chase knocked in Andrew Toles for the Dodgers’ second run. 2-0

With Utley on second, Corey Seager also rapped out an RBI single. 3-0

Reds
Three scoreless innings for Urias. He was making it look easy.

4th inning  3-0
1,2,3 inning. Four scoreless for Urias.

5th inning  3-0
Another shutout inning.

6th inning
Adrian Gonzalez singled and Yasmani Grandal followed with a double.
Joc Pederson brought in Gonzo with a sac fly. 4-0

Reds
Urias started the inning at 78 pitches and only four hits.
At 90 pitches, he had men on the corners and two outs. He got the final out with a pop up at 97 pitches.

7th inning  4-0
Joe Blanton in. First batter – double. With a couple of runners on, Blanton executed a heckuva strike out of Joey Votto to close the threat.

8th inning  4-0
Oh no…Home Run Baez in to pitch!
Manager Roberts was hedging his bet, though. He also had Kenley Jansen warming up.
A strike out and a 6-4-3 DP kept the shutout alive.

9th inning  4-0
Kenley Jansen in for the first time in over a week.
Adam Duvall: K swinging
Eugenio Suarez: single
Ivan De Jesus Jr. : K swinging
Scott Schebler: K

Dodgers win! 4-0

Julio Urias stepped up and started strong. He had great command, and excellent breaking balls. His slider was especially effective today. Beyond the numbers, young Urias did what is expected from a seasoned veteran. He brought much-needed stability to a reeling team. He showed poise and focus, and pitched with authority. Today was the deepest Urias has pitched in a game as a starter.

Kudos to the Dodgers defense: They flashed some fine leather backing Urias today. They turned two double plays, and Red and Gonzo combined on a circus juggle and dig play for a big end to the fifth.

Streaking: Corey Seager now has a 12-game hitting streak. Adrian Gonzalez has him topped at 14 games.

The Traded Flop Watch: Batted 6th. Went 0 for 4.

Dodgers now tied with the Giants for first place.

Julio Urias (W 6-4) went 6 innings with 6 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 6 Ks.  ERA 3.95

Home run: Chase Utley

Team with RISP: 2 for 4

  1. Nice win and job by Urias. But ball/strike ratio still not where it should be to pitch deeper in the game. Saw RC last night. Some of the worst hitting I have seen. The good guys have been promoted. These guys look like high schoolers. Some of them aren’t much older. The Cuban Yadier something looked hopeless. Go Mets.

    1. Yusniel Diaz? He had been hitting better since coming off the DL. He’s still young for the level, but given the $30 million they spent to sign him I’m sure they had high hopes.

        1. Ironic that they signed Toles for a bag of balls and he’s already in the big leagues. But that’s baseball.

  2. Diaz would be freshman in college so he’s one of the younger players in that league or at least younger than avg.

  3. I would guess Toles was called up instead of Puig because they wanted to give Kendricks a rest and did not want to put Puig in left or switch Reddick to left so they could replace him in right field.

  4. If they just left the kid in the rotation the rest of the year. He would probably finish with about 140 IP this year

  5. I think Urias will stay in the rotation and will be just under 150 innings… like I said in July.

My Lineup against the Giants LH Pitchers:

    1. Hernandez CF
    2. Kendrick 2B
    3. Turner 3B
    4. Gonzo 1B
    5. Puig RF
    6. Segedin LF
    7. Grandal C
    8. Seager SS

    1. Much better than we’ve seen. Don’t think I would drop ROY all the way to 8th. Should score some runs.

        1. Toles is a LH hitter. Hernandez is hitting below the Mendoza line and is no RF…….better think that one over.

        2. I don’t think Hernandez deserves to be in the majors. No track record of success. At least with Reddick, you have an idea of what he can be. Both don’t seem to be able to thrive with the Dodgers.

Granted, Puig needs re-education and a good purge with self-criticism ala Mao. But, even in his present state, he is an upgrade over anyone we have at the moment in RF. I’m all for getting him special help in the off-season. However, we are in a race and the time is growing shorter. No reason to deny him and his talent when they have given others a shot who are far below his grade.

  6. GREAT GAME TODAY. ALL AROUND GOOD PLAY. way to go faz.
Lets get a win on the way out tomorrow and some momentum heading face first at the gints.

  7. Urias won’t get 150 innings. IF he gets 6 more starts, which frankly I doubt, he could finish between 130-140, which is plenty. To get 150 he would need to average 8 innings per start. Don’t see it. Is that negative? And I say again, this might be a good time to try that 6 man rotation. Kazmir and Maeda could benefit with the extra day rest in September. We have the arms to do it.

Puig is ripping it up at AAA. I think he learned his lesson. Reddick ain’t working. Trade him to Cincinatti. Better fit. (Insert joke about Bluedick here) Puig is probably the best WAR player we have for that position.

Game over. I’m putting my bat and balls away for the night.

    Carry on.

  8. They are 4-6 in their last 10 games. Not a record to inspire confidence going into 6 of the most important games of the year. For some reason Hernandez does well against Bumgarner. He has 3 bombs off him. I too think a 6 man rotation might benefit every body. Bring Stripling back and put Anderson back on the DL. There are 10 days left before the September call ups can begin, and the same time left on the waiver trade deadline. It was suggested on ESPN that Puig was still trade bait.

    1. I don’t like a 6 man rotation for various reasons. The main one is that you always will have to rely on too many mediocre talents to take up at least the last 2 slots. Stripling, at best, is a wild card. I would put him in the bullpen and get rid of some of the bums we have stationed there. Dayton and Fields are certainly not helping, and Baez is still too inconsistent in spite of all the heat he brings. It’s a shame, as I had high hopes for him.

Hill has yet to be evaluated. If it turns out that he is indeed an arm worth using, then without Kershaw, you’ve got Maeda, Kaz, Hill, Urias, and ??? Certainly not Norris, Anderson, or McCarthy. If Kershaw comes back, then we have a starting 5, all with winning records!!

  9. I understand where you’re all coming from re Puig, Reddick, etc.

Here’s the thing, for me, and I’m just a bit crazy/drunk/wily.

We’ve got 9 games with the Giants. Let’s roll the dice a bit in this next series with them. They’re lining up their best. But my honest opinion is that neither team is dominant and we could go either way, at this point, with any lineup.

So I’d keep Puig in AAA. Sit Reddick. Play Toles, Segedin and Hernandez against Bumgarner and Moore, and Perderson, Toles and Hernandez against Cueto.

And I’d start going with the 6 man rotation too.

This is no more stupid than rolling out Anderson and McCarthy.

I just don’t think the Giants are that good, and I like Toles speed. And I just don’t like Reddick failing under pressure. He’s another Hatcher — I think we’re going to have to baby him until he gets hot.

(Better keep me away from the line-up cards.)
