Kazmir Vs. Shark in Game 2

Justin Turner HR

Kenley Jansen nearly gave us all a heart attack on Friday night, but the Dodgers hung on to defeat the Giants by a 3-2 score. The Clayton Kershaw versus Johnny Cueto duel ended in a draw. Surprisingly it was Justin Turner’s clutch solo home run in the top of the ninth off of Santiago Casilla that put the Dodgers ahead and broke the tie. Ironically it seems that since Oscar wrote that article Turner’s bat seems to have reawakened a bit. I’ve asked Oscar to write more articles about every hitter on the position roster. Hopefully they all troll Oscar as well.

Today the Dodgers will try and take a series win in San Francisco as left hander Scott Kazmir will battle Jeff Samardijza on Fox Saturday baseball. A series win in the lion’s den of phony book park would be delicious.

Dodgers Lineup @ Giants

Scott Kazmir-5-3 vs. Jeff Samardzija-7-4

Game Time – 4:15 PM – TV- FOX

Kazmir had a leg cramp in his last start against Atlanta, but performed well enough to earn the win. Kazmir has won four of his last five decisions and has struck out 24 against 4 walks over his last three decisions. Overall Kazmir is 5-3 with a 4.46 ERA in 12 starts. Kazmir has struck out 72 and walked 24 over 68.2 innings pitched. He is 0-1 in two starts this year against the Giants. The veteran is 1-2 with a 5.23 ERA in 4 career starts, while posting a 4.32 ERA at At&t Park. Brandon Belt seems to have Kazmir’s number with 3 home runs and 5 hits in 10 career at-bats. The rest of the Giants haven’t done much.

The Giants signed right hander Jeff Samardzija also known as the shark in the offseason to a 5-year 90 million dollar contract and it was money well spent for them. The 31-year old has posted a 7-4 record with a 3.33 ERA. Over his 12 starts he’s whiffed 68 and walked 18 while posting a 3.56 FIP in 81 frames. He’s struck out 7.6 per nine and allowed 8.2 hits per nine.

He’s given up four earned runs or more in his last two starts and has failed to get past the fifth inning in each of them. He’s faced the Dodgers once this year back in April and the Dodgers defeated him. In that start he allowed three earned runs over six innings. He’s made 3 career starts against the Dodgers posting a 1-3 record with a 4.79 ERA.  Watch Chase Utley today because he’s batting .389 against the Shark with 5 extra-base hits.

Miraculously the Dodgers are still in this thing. The offense still sucks, but I can’t complain about a clutch hit, especially a home run. One more win would put the Dodgers 2 games behind in the loss column. How cool would that be to be that close to first place after all of the terrible offense and injuries this season. Don’t forget to tune into Fox this afternoon to watch the game and then head over here afterwards for the recap.

Go Blue!

  1. Bring Latos back. Maybe F&Z can sign him for say $12,000,000 for the rest of 2016 with an option for 2017. Yes, indeed.

  2. Well, if we aren’t going to get any hitters any time soon, let’s at least, trade for Corbin and Greinke who combined are hitting .312 so far.

  3. And once again, vs a leftie pitcher, Bochy plays his regulars regardless of what side of the plate they hit from. That’s a smart manager. He knows not giving a pitcher the same look over and over is a smart thing

      1. probably cuz they let their leftie hitters hit against leftie pitchers, thus giving them experience vs lefties

  4. Kazmir is pitching like he is pitching in a band box, instead of a pitchers park. He pitches like a rookie pitcher at times.

  5. Turner’s double was the best hit, that I have seen Turner hit this year, other then his HRs.

And he drove the ball well, in his last at bat. Maybe Turner is back! And a nice play from Howie in left.

Crawford wouldn’t make that play, he would have let the ball drop, then pick it up.

And good hits from both, Trayce and Grandal too.

  6. Not smart by Joc (obviously)

meanwhile, it’s only the 4th inning, and Samardja is already at 81 pitches. We’re making him work!

    1. I know Bobby I noticed that. I would have thought Kazmir would be there, after that first inning.

I kind of want the shark to stay in the game, because they are hitting him well.

He is always getting behind on the count. But Joc could easily scored from second!

  7. Great hits from both Turner and Agone! It seems like Agone is always unlucky, when drives a ball hard in SF.

Because they hit the wall, and don’t go out. Turner is back today too! And it looks like the team is too!!! Let’s go Dodgers!

    1. Darn that ball must not have been hard enough. It really sucks because the Dodgers should have one more run. And Kazmir’s walks have bit us.

  8. What the heck? Kazmir hadn’t given up a hit since the 1st. What is DR thinking? Kazmir could’ve been Pinch hit for at the beginning of the next inning. Why waste a pitcher? Does Coleman need work? I don’t get it!!!!!

    1. So now Coleman gives up the go ahead run and Howell comes in. Like Jimmy Durante once said : What a revolting development this is”.

    2. Richie
Kazmir walks, along with his fear of pitching to Belt, has bit us. And that is what exactly happened when Kazmir gave up two runs in the first.

Roberts made the right decision but that second ground ball, wasn’t hit hard enough. And Cory threw the ball, at Chase’s feet.

  9. Meanwhile, in A ball today, Brandon McCarthy threw 20 pitches in 2 innings. Allowed only 1 hit, which was a home run, and recorded 6 outs.

Let’s see how he feels the next few days!

    1. Bobby
This bad base running may cost us the game.

And Ryu is pitching a rehab game tomorrow. And Puig does a rehab game, on Monday.

    2. Why did Joc swing at that pitch? This guy was behind on the count again, and just walked a run in, and Joc swings at first strike.

That right there, is the difference between Joc and Trayce.

  10. Is Joc basicaly Adam Dunn, with better defense?

It’s not the worst thing in the world, especially because Joc plays a good CF, but will he ever see above .250 again?

    1. Bobby
Other then Joc really good hit today, he has hurt a twice in this game.

Once trying to steal third, when the Dodgers were behind, and in this at bat. Why swing at first strike?

  11. With Ellis batting what happens if Grandal gets hurt? Who catches?
Or do they move Grandal to 1B and leave Ellis in the game?

Never mind I forgot we have Barnes on the roster.

  12. Wow, that was so close to being caught by Parker; he just missed it

Now let’s get some more, and make Kenley’s job easier

    1. Funny you mention it, as I’m about to make some of Bobby’s world famous scrambled eggs for dinner!

  13. The Dodgers didn’t deserve to win this game, especially with all the bad base running!

And Corey threw an easy throw, to Utley’s feet.

And what can you say about Kenley.

Often at the begining of the year, his pitch just isn’t cutting.

And it seems to always take a week to figure it out.

But after last night’s game, you would think that Honeycutt and Kenley would have already done something about this.

    That is a heart breaker!

  14. The dam SF crowd should make Kenley pitch better.

He should have used the crowd to motivate him, like Utley did!

  15. this is just not a good club. There is no shame in starting over. Start jettisoning some of the veterans and get some prospects in. Stick a fork in them this year. The Giants are just a better club in every way.

  16. Being a Dodger fan —– I am glad the Giants came back and won the game tonight.

    Why?

Blow this Dodger team up. The way these GMs work, Kershaw will leave as soon as he can. Jansen the same. And almost everyone here has listed the weakness in the players and lack of learning.

The sooner ownership truly understands that the roster is just not a good roster to win. Then someone who knows baseball can come in and make a team that plays together and plays fundamentals.

I truly disagree with Mark on The Plan — and it will work. Heck, all the teams have A Plan. Don’t tell me that the Dodgers are waiting for the farm guys to mature and save this team. Some of them will just not work out. And these GMs will not go out and make a big trade.

On, on the ending of the game tonight, Cory could not hold on to the ball thrown back by Thompson. And Cory just could not get that ground ball up the middle that scored the winning run. I beg if Arrrrr were out there –HE WOULD HAVE MADE THE PLAY.

      1. Ok I am over this loss now.

Because good things did come out of this loss.

Turner and everyone else, started to hit today.

And Agone had two hits, and hit what should have been the game winning HR.

We didn’t even think that they would hit enough, to score any runs, let alone, close to winning the first two games.

And Turner coming around, and hitting again, is a big thing for this team.

Because it makes everyone else’s at bats, better, like it did to night.

And really, the Dodgers were lucky to even be in this game, after the two base running errors.

Roberts better talk to both Kike, and Joc, about there base running.

And Honeycutt and Kenley, better figure it out.

Kenley was lucky to not lose last night’s game.

His pitches are not really cutting that much.

What really makes everyone feel so bad, besides just losing the game. It is those smung SF fans, yelling beat LA.

And the Dodgers are to much of a proud team, and proud tradition, that they don’t respond to all of those fans, from all the other teams.

        Because this is the Dodgers!

  17. Now you know why the Dodgers won’t break the bank to sign Kenley. Take away his BLOWN GAMES and the Dodgers would be in 1st Place!

Some morons keep saying that Friedman did not build the farm and say that the farm was build by Colletti. Don’t be a dumbass and buy into that drivel. Yes, the Dodgers did have some good prospects from the Colletti days (which, by the way, FAZ refused to trade), but let’s look at the list of the TOP 30 PROSPECTS FAZ is responsible for in JUST ONE YEAR:

    Montas
    Verdugo
    Buehler
    Alvarez
    Diaz
    Barnes
    Heredia
    Johnson
    Calhoun
    Estevez
    Sborz
    Davis
    Abdullah
    Brito

… and that doesn’t include Trayce Thompson, whom FAZ acquired!

That is 14 of the TOP 30 Dodger prospects that FAZ has been responsible for… in just one year! ONE YEAR! Almost half of the TOP 30 prospects have came from the new FO! IN JUST ONE YEAR!

Don’t show your ignorance. Quit saying stupid stuff!

Ryu is back on track and so is McCarthy! Anderson is also throwing.

The best is yet to come. I still like Kenley – he’s just not worth $12 – $15 million a year… which is what he will get!

    1. You continue to be one of the more unpleasant individuals I’ve run across in the last decade or so. One has to ask – why do you persist in hanging out with so many dumbasses? Isn’t there a Mensa meeting you could be attending? Your immense skill is being wasted here, your genius lost and unappreciated among the unwashed.

I know it must be frustrating for you to see the team play exactly like so many of us predicted it would. But hang in there, 95 wins is right around the corner.

I was down with that from the get-go, but Dodger fans are too fickle. Giants fans come regardless…. not so much in LA! Guggs and Kasten promised a competitive team and they have delivered. It took the Giants extra innings to beat the Dodgers. There’s not a lot of difference between the teams… maybe the manager!

    1. Has nothing to do with the fans. There is a big difference between the two clubs. Different philosophies , management, Giants have better pitching, and better clutch hitting.

This not a competitive club, this is an average club. Extra innings? big deal. It took the Giants all of 60 seconds to come from behind and win. There’s one big difference in the two teams and it’s glaring. The Giants won! The Dodgers lost! Extra innings or not, they didn’t win. The only reason the Dodgers are not buried in the standings is because of Kershaw.

The hitting and base running are among the worst I have seen in years. The coaching staff is unproven, the game management is terrible. The non Kershaw starters are unable to pitch past the 5th inning. Even worse the front office is inept and clueless. Spending unwisely on injury riddled pitchers, marginal players, and mediocre players in general.

All the while delusional people continue to say how great they are. Mark, you’ve seen the great clubs of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Do you really think this team could stack up with those clubs? Better yet, do you really believe this team can stack up with the good teams in the league presently like Cubs, Mets, Nationals, and Giants?

This is an average club. I don’t see them going anywhere this season unless some big moves are made. They need right handed power in their lineup, and or anyone that can reliably hit. They need some speed in the lineup. They need some starters that can give them some innings and a better bench.

Hard to see them able to compete this year, Maybe they can grab a wild card if they make some moves, guys get healthy and everything can go their way. No way they win the division though, or win more than 85 games at most.

I’ve seen enough from this season. It’s time to accept that the Dodgers need a lot of work to even sniff the playoffs this year.

      1. Scott
Those dam smug fans yelling beat LA, is what gets everyone so emotional.

Along with the fact, that the Dodgers got us emotionally involved again, by almost winning the first two games.

Then there was Joc and Kike.

      2. The Only way they get to the playoffs is by winning the West. I can’t see a Wild Card run.

As I mentioned yesterday all of the hitters are underperforming. If anyone is naive enough to believe that will continue all season, then by all means believe that but it won’t stay this way. It never does. Not the whole team.

Poor base running? I’ve seen bad and good. More good actually. I’ve actually seen the Giants be a lot more sloppy

Justin Turner and Yasmani are ready to get hot just like Gonzo is.

Many of you see what you believe not what is real. Vision? Not so much.

        1. Mark
That is why I said that a lot of good, did come out of that game. Turner broke out yesterday, as well as Agone, in the power department.

Also like you said, Grandal had a hit and a rbi, as well as Howie, and a few other players. Trayce kept up his good hitting. And if Joc and Kike, would have been smarter, on the bases, the Dodgers would have probably won the game, in nine innings.

And Kenley was lucky, that he didn’t lose the prior game, that he pitched in. It kind of gets anoying, when Honeycutt, and Kenley, don’t recognise that his ball is not cutting like it is suppose to be, until Kenley, blows a save. Because Kenley, has been a little shakey, since the SD series. And as you know, if Kenley’s cutter is not cutting it is just a big fat fastball, that almost any big leaguer can drive.

Kenley was exceptionally good last year, but it prior years, he has had this come up mainly, at the begining of the season. And this is a free agent year, for Kenley, so he might be over throwing at times.

    2. Mark
There is much more to do, in LA then SF.

And the Dodgers have two other teams, in Southern California, that they beat in attendance every year, along with the Giants.

  19. MJ,

I think there is no lack of things to do in either city. I would not characterize LA as having more to do.

    1. Mark
A lot of people who goes to the games, don’t actually live in LA. They live hour, or hour and a half away.

I don’t live in actually city of LA. I don’t even live in LA county. But there is tons to do in Southern California.

We have the mountains, the beach, and the desert. There are not a lot of states, that have those three options, to explore. Also like I said, the Dodgers have two other teams, that people can go and see, in southern California, not just the Dodgers.

And believe or not, the cost of living in SF is higher. And as you know, the Giant’s stadium, they sell out, but the place doesn’t have as many seats, as Dodger stadium has. And the Dodgers have not won a world series, for a long time, and the Giants have won three in the last six years.

I think everyone in LA, would be much more patient, if the Dodgers had recently did that. That is the biggest problem, about having to wait another three or four years. And the fact that the Giants have won three world series recently, adds to the problem.

Especially because the Dodgers have won the division in the last three years, and all we hear from the broadcasters, about how much money the Dodger’s payroll is.

      1. True but the Giants still have a better management structure at all levels. If Guggenheim is so smart, why aren’t they copying the Giants management instead of Oakland and Tampa?

        1. Because it’s presently now, not about winning.
It’s about reducing payroll and not committing to long term liabilities.

In this Mark is 100% correct.

He just likes to be a (Richard) about it.
