He Did The Mash, He Did The Max Muncy Mash

While watching the Dodger game last night, broadcasters Joe Davis and Orel Hershiser got to talking about the latest Dodgers sensation – of course, Max Muncy. This time the discussion wasn’t about anything as mundane as WAR stats.

Joe and Bulldog were talking about a theme song for Muncy. Orel, exposing his naive puppy side that sometimes peeks out during casual conversation, didn’t recognize the first song that was mentioned, and that got me to thinking, “What song would fit Max Muncy, but also be familiar enough that  Orel would know?”

My personal nickname for Muncy is “Mash Muncy”, and some folks out there think Muncy bears a resemblance to a wolf or  Wolfman, so I settled on that Halloween classic, “The Monster Mash”. With accolades and apologies to the original songwriters: Leonard L. Capizzi / Bobby Pickett, here is my version: The “Muncy Mash”.

The Dodgers were tied in the bottom of the ninth,
When my eyes beheld a blue-tinted sight
For Number 13 from the bench began to rise
And suddenly to my surprise…
Chorus:
He did the mash
He did the Muncy mash
The Muncy mash
It was a stadium smash
He did the mash
It caught on in a flash
He did the mash
He did the Muncy mash
Wah-ooo…
From Spring Training in the Arizona heat
To Chavez Ravine with Randy Newman’s beat
The Dodgers fam came from their humble abodes
To see Muncy knock those pitchers out cold
They did the mash
They did the Muncy mash
(chorus)
The Dodgers were having fun
The party had just begun
The guests included Kenley, Kershaw and Koufax
The scene was rockin’, all were digging the sounds
Dieter on ivory and DJ Severe making speakers pound
Vin Scully was about to arrive
With his vocal group, “The Chowder Society Five”
They played the mash (Chorus)
Out from the dugout , Tommy’s voice did ring
Seems he was troubled by just one thing
He took the top step and shook his fist
He shouted, “Whatever happened to my Series Champions’ twist?”
It’s now the mash (Chorus)
Now everything’s cool, Doc’s a part of the band
And the Muncy Mash is the hit of the land
For the bandwagoners, this mash was meant too
When you get to the stadium gates, tell them Muncy sent you
Then you can mash
Then you can Muncy Mash
The Muncy mash
And do the stadium smash
Then you can mash
Homers fly out in a flash
Then you can mash
Then you can Muncy mash (fade)

  1. Uh, Oscar, that is pretty cool, but out right plagiarism! Oh, by the way, I won the auction and have another Robinson porcelain card.

      1. Hey, I have two now, so if you want one of them let me know….Ya missed Bobby’s middle name….on the record it was Bobby ” Boris” Pickett

      2. It’s not plagiarism.

But I do worry whether Oscar will next break out a remix of it in his next beer review …. I like his song I just don’t trust his singing !

  2. Just close your eyes and as John Lennon wrote “Imagine” if the Dodgers would have signed Verlander instead of the Darvish last season.

    Carry On

      1. I never expected Verlander. Neither did any of you. I was actually pleasantly surprised we got Darvish. I was also very surprised he was as bad as he was. Anybody with that much talent should be able to get people out. Tipping pitches? If true, why didn’t our staff of geniuses figure that out? Because of course they didn’t.

We will get Latos revisited if we get anybody. It’s my opinion our best hope is Kershaw, Hill and Maeda finish strong and that Urias can actually pitch some innings late summer.

        1. Yard barker had a link to one of the Dodger blogs listing the 5 most likely targets at the deadline for the Dodgers. They all were pitchers and 3 were starters. Hamels, Happ, Archer, Britton and Escobar. I doubt they get any of those guys although Escobar would be a huge boost to the pen. I do not trust Britton since he is so recently off the DL. As for our sore armed returnee’s, if they are truly healthy and can give some length in their starts, that would help immensely. But as far as the teams resurgence goes, I will be more convinced they are for real if they can beat the Giants this weekend with the staff that they have now since they could not beat them when they had all the so called big 5.

        2. I like it just as it is, Badger. More exciting, less reliance on ‘expensive arms’. Too much time and money are spent on starting pitchers. They are not worth what they make and FAZ are proving it with their motley crue(crew). This is the nouvelle vague of baseball.

      2. Oscar

That is a cute idea, I like it!

Muncy does kind of look like a wolf, he is hairy and his ears are almost as big as my dog’s ears, are.

For some reason, I always remember who wrote that song, even though it first came out in 1962, when I was not even in kindergarten yet.

True I love the song Imagine, and I love your thought about Verlander, too!

I was surprised more people didn’t think of Verlander, would be a good idea to get, although YF thought Verlander would be the best to get, too.

I thought Verlander would be good to get, because he has always been pretty good in the post season, and he really should have won the Cy Young, the year before, last year.

For some reason, he has kept his velocity, although he was not as good for one season, because he had to have an oblique surgery the year before, so it took him a while to get back on track.

Badger is right, we wouldn’t have gotten Verlander anyways, because of the money he is still owned, and because we don’t have much money to spend, because of the luxury tax considerations.

But we would probably have more money, if the front office, was not just trying to get the cheapest deals, when it comes to starting pitching.

Because you almost pay for what you get, and even the Yankees passed on McCarthy, and that should have been a sign to our GM.

McCarthy is not a pitcher to bet any money on, because he is not a gamer or a fighter, he will easily go out of a game, as well, as Anderson, and Kazmir.

        1. I was pretty much the only guy pining for Verlander. Now I’m the only guy pining for Cole Hamels.

          1. I wanted Hamels 3 years ago. All I got in here was “it would cost Seager and Urias”, which was of course nonsense. Now, knowing his contract would put us about $15 milion over the salary cap I am as certain as I can be he ain’t coming here.

This is a reset year. Whatever moves are made will keep us under $197 million. The organization is counting on our broken starters mending. If they don’t? Who knows wtf will happen.

  3. I missed the Max Muncy song discussion. However Orel was tough on Beltre not playing 3B like he once did. Though that barehanded throw to first was vintage.

    1. Orel is stupid. 39 year old guy who is going to be in the Hall of Fame misses one play and makes numerous others and he can’t play 3rd like he used to>? Naturally. He is not as fast as he once was, neither am I. Orel has no business criticizing anyone since he is about the worst on air analyst I have ever heard.

      1. Hey Bear
Am I wrong or do you not think too much of Orel? He loves the FO so much he makes excuses over every thing they do. What a jerk.

  4. The Dodgers have actually used 67 different lineups in all (1-9). Roberts has never used the same lineup twice.

  5. Kemp suspended one week, Kemp appealing.

In this case, “appealing” probably means “postponing until a more convenient time to serve this penalty that will not get reduced.”

    1. Bluto
I thought it was just 1 game. Am I wrong?

Guess Bear answered that question. Thanks though.

  6. Orioles have interviewed former Dodgers GM Ned Colletti for an executive position, sources tell The Athletic. Team also believed to be interviewing others, but have not asked permission to speak with anyone currently working for a club. Colletti is an analyst for SportsNet LA.
