McCarthy vs. Price in Rubber Game, Rob Segedin Debuts

Rob Segedin

The Dodgers bounced back on Saturday afternoon with an impressive 3-0 shutout win over the Red Sox to even the series at one game each. Ross Stripling tossed five shutout frames and the Dodger bats plated enough runs secure the win. Corey Seager set the all time LA Dodger rookie record for doubles, which broke the record previous held by Eric Karros. Congratulations to Seager for having an incredible season.

Today the Dodgers will wrap up their interleague series against the Red Sox as Brandon McCarthy takes the mound against left hander David Price in the rubber game. Newly acquired Rich Hill was supposed to start today but his blister problem is still not resolved. The Dodgers are stating that he should make his debut start on Friday against the Pirates. So McCarthy gets moved up into the Sunday slot.

McCarthy has pitched very well since he’s returned from the disabled list. He’s still technically in recovery from his Tommy John surgery and the Dodgers have been very careful not to overload him. He’s made 6 starts and has a 2-2 record with a 2.76 ERA. He’s struck out 10.7 per nine and has a 1.023 WHIP in 29 innings pitched.

So far I have been wrong about McCarthy and he has proven that with some solid pitching. However over his last couple of starts he’s said that his body felt tired. Over his last couple of outings he’s only lasted 4 and 3 innings respectively. He hasn’t won a start since July 9th, so the Dodgers should keep an eye on him. I worry about him breaking down again.

McCarthy has faced the Red Sox many times before during his time in the American League. He’s made 7 starts and 10 appearances against the Red Sox and has a 3-4 record with a 4.75 ERA. In 14 career interleague starts McCarthy is 4-8 with a 4.32 ERA.

David Ortiz 18 15 4 1 0 1 2 3 0 .267 .389 .533 .922 0 0 1 0 1

David Price signed a humongous contract with Boston during the offseason and has yet to live up to expectations or pitch to his usual standards. Price is 9-7 with a 4.30 ERA over 23 starts. He’s struck out 156 and walked 31 and allowed 9.4 hits per nine innings.

There’s the problem right there. Price has been allowing too many base runners. Not being able to limit base runners is a big problem for a pitcher. Price has given up 157 hits in 150 innings pitched this year. You know when a hurler has allowed more hits than innings pitched there is a big problem.

Price has made one career start against the Dodgers. In that start he allowed one unearned run on seven hits over seven frames while striking out 4. Over 28 career interleague starts Price has posted a 12-11 record with a 3.39 ERA.

The Dodgers made a roster move this afternoon. They optioned Chris Taylor to Oklahoma City and recalled right handed hitting infielder Rob Segedin. The club moved Trayce Thompson to the 60-day DL to clear room on the 40-man roster. We saw Segedin back in spring training but this is the first time we have seen him this season.

Segedin was hitting .319 with a .392 OBP and 21 home runs in 103 games at Oklahoma City this season. Taylor while being fine defensively was not hitting a lick (.229), so I have no problem with this move. The Dodgers may as well give Segedin a chance. He can’t hit any worse than Taylor or a couple of other Mendoza line Dodgers like I don’t know Kike Hernandez, or Scott Van Slyke? Segedin is in the lineup today playing left field and batting eighth.

Oh and the Giants lost again to Washington earlier today 1-0. Tanner Roark out dueled Madison Bumgarner and thanks to a Wilson Ramos home run, the Nats beat the Giants again. That means with a win today the Dodgers can move to within one game of first place in the NL West.

Make it happen boys!

Go Blue!

  1. Pretty historic day. A-Roid announces his retirement and Ichiro 1 hit from 3,000. Segedin debuts, about 2 months late if you ask me and you won’t. Corey Seager is the odds on pick to be the ROY, first in many many years. So another user and cheat announces he is leaving the game and it is huge news. Personally he could have rode off into the sunset years ago and baseball would have been a better game for it. At least there is pretty much no way he gets to 700 homers unless he really gets on the stuff this last week. Adios A-Roid and do not let the door hit you in the ass on the way out……..oh……the Yankees hired him to be an advisor and mentor……..imagine that…….he should just leave the game period. And that my friends is all I will say on A-Roid…

    1. I think they worked something out financially so he does not ham string the Yanks…..Congrats to Ichiro! Triple for hit # 3000!!!!!

  2. aRod, like Barroid, will be remembered for the PEDs. Both were excellent ballplayers before they went that route. They screwed up. But neither have really suffered.

Segedin. Can he hit ML pitching? Pederson hit .300 at AAA. Barnes has a creep .299 average in the minors. Big step going to the Majors.

    1. Afternoon Scott! How Ya Doin?? Chance to creep up on the Gnats, but Price is not an easy win…McCarthy will have to be nails today….

    1. Badger, from last thread post you made. Please substitute Texas for Montana (besides the size analogy, I actually like Montana)

  3. McCarthy, after a really nice start to his year, has really regressed the last 3-4 starts. Not sure if the elbow needs more time or not, but he’s not cutting it now. Can’t rely on him for now.

Rob Segedin I think set a Dodger all time record with his 4 rbi in his very first game. He’s done more in 3 at bat than Reddick has in the last week. And Segedin didn’t cost us Grant Holmes or Montas

  4. Why did Roberts let Avilan pitch to two rightie pitchers.

He should have brought Blanton in, after the right handed bat, was announced.

    1. With the 4 run lead he’s trying to steal outs. Thats what happens when the starting pitcher doesn’t go at least 5. And of course hindsight is always 20/20.

    1. Does he have anything to learn in the minors? Lol….sarcasm…..joking

1 of 3 things will happen with Puig. He will perform well, he won’t perform well or he will battle injuries.

2 of those will lower his trade value.

The other will not truly mean much until he is able to produce consistetly against major league pitching. The Puig roller coaster has left the station. Hold on.

  5. That was impressive. After losing 2-3 in Colorado, and getting blown out 9-0 in the first game of this series, we came back to win the next 2, and beat Boston 2-3 games. Good for us !

1 game behind san crapcisco. This week they go to Miami for 3 and are home vs Baltimore for 3. We’re home for 3 v Philly and 3 v. Pitt

  6. I may be a little dense but why was Sedgelin taken lout of the game after going 2for 3 and 4 RBI’s? Did he get hurt? Or did DR have a brain cramp?

    1. I can only guess it might have been for defense since he’s relatively new to left field. AGon sure picked a good time to hit #300, though.

        1. That was a really good move to bring up Segedin.

More teams should give players like Segedin a chance.

Let’s hope he can keep it up.

Nomar said that he can hit both leftie and rightie pitchers.

The whole team played well, and took advantage of Price when Price was down.

Roberts has made this team play more like a team.

The team never use to come back, after the seventh inning, when Mattingly was the manager.

          Just one game out!

  7. Wow. It actually worked out. That game could have gotten away from us early, and there certainly was some sloppy play. The earned run score was 5-5.

I think what is happening to Puig is the equivalent of sending a child to his room, (or maybe to reform schoo). Perhaps he just doesn’t listen well and he’s at AAA with one last shot at making an adjustment. This should be easy for him. He has the talent to rip that league up and he’s on notice.

    1. Badger
Puig has a lot of talent, but he will never make it in the bigs, if he isn’t going to listen.

He is going to have to prove he is going to work at it.

He barely played in Cuba in there top league.

I think the Dodgers made the right move.

And people were talking about how Puig had two or three hits in his last game in the bigs.

But Puig got those hits, against the Dbacks bullpen, and they were pitchers, that had just came up from AAA.

  8. Shades of Von McDaniel. McCarthy was wilder than a March Hare. Vinny told a great story about how Rex Barney totally lost it, and I loved the part about Charlie Dressen trying to relax the guy by giving him a shot of bourbon! McCarthy needed a gallon of it today. Congrats to Rob Segedin, who in my humble opinion should have made the team out of spring training…..

    1. Michael
I liked when Vin said that McCarthy is going to have to get over it.

It seems to be more mental, unless McCarthy is afraid to say that he has something physically wrong.

      That is affecting his mechanics.

It would be odd to be mental now, after McCarthy was able to come back, after getting hit in the head.

What I don’t understand, is this happening in between his starts.

Is he having problems with his mechanics, when he is doing his bullpen sessions during the week, or is it just related to throwing off the mound in a game?

  9. He couldn’t make a team that already had a fistful of utility players. Shoutout to my favorite of the bunch, Kike Hernandez. Nice game banana man.

It should be noted that Snotrocket went the distance and lost a 2 hitter. So sorry for the crude rube.

1 game out? Can this be sustained?

    1. Kike seems to be back, he had a pinch hit hit, in the first game, and two hits in the second game, and he hit that HR yesterday.

He can be really valuble to the Dodgers, especially against lefties, if he can keep this up.

If both Kike, and Segedin both can keep this up, this will help us with the games against the Giants two leftie pitchers.

And if McCarthy can’t get it together, we will probably have to put Anderson in the rotation, when a is ready.
