Mediocre Dodgers Welcome Below Mediocre Padres

Padresvs.Dodgers

The internet is still abuzz over the hilariously shocking news of Dee Gordon’s 80-game suspension for testing positive for PEDs. Just imagine little Dee was juicing all along. The thought creeps into my head and almost makes me laugh out loud. Don’t let the funny news distract you from the terrible baseball the Dodgers have been playing.

The club just got swept by former manager Don Mattingly and the Miami Marlins four straight. They’ve lost four in a row and six of ten at home. The offense has been pathetically non-existent. In case you were wondering the Dodger offense was 2 for 27 with runners in scoring position this week. The bullpen is a dumpster fire, and the moneyball front office continues to turn a blind eye to the terrible roster creation. It’s the same problems, different season.

The only known cure for such pitiful play is the San Diego Padres. They’re so bad and the Dodgers beat up on them so good in the first three games of the season, there’s no chance they could lose now….right?!?!….Riiiiight?! Humor me, please.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. The Dodgers will be facing a rookie making his second MLB start tonight. So that means they’ll probably get no-hit.

24-year old right hander Cesar Vargas has been called up to start for the Padres. On April 23 he made his MLB debut against the Cardinals and actually pitched pretty well. In that start he threw five innings allowing one earned run on five hits, walked three and struck out three. Unfortunately for him, the Padres got pummeled and lost. He was not involved in the decision. Vargas was signed by the Yankees as an amateur free agent in 2009. He hails from Puebla, Mexico. The Padres signed him as a free agent on November, 20, 2015.

The Dodgers will counter with Alex Wood. He’s been bad this year, but perhaps there is still hope, although I doubt it. In his last start, Wood got pulverized by the Rockies, allowing five earned runs on six hits over five innings. Overall he is 1-2 with a 6.00 ERA in 21 innings pitched. He’s struck out 12 and walked 11 and his FIP is 4.44. Even though the advanced metrics say he hasn’t pitched as bad as it seems. Trust me he has.

Wood has pitched well against the Padres though. He is 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 4 starts. The current Padres that have seen have hit him. The showpads are batting .400 (9 for 22) with a home run and an OPS of over 1.000 against Wood. Former Dodger Matt Kemp is 4 for 6 with a home run. Speaking of Kemp, he’s off to a good start this season. He’s hitting .274 (23 for 84) with 6 home runs and 15 runs driven in.

Wood vs. Padres

Name PA AB H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS SH SF IBB HBP GDP
Derek Norris 9 8 2 1 0 0 0 1 0 .250 .333 .375 .708 0 0 0 0 0
Matt Kemp 6 6 4 0 0 1 1 0 0 .667 .667 1.167 1.833 0 0 0 0 0
Melvin Upton 4 3 2 2 0 0 0 1 0 .667 .750 1.333 2.083 0 0 0 0 0
Travis Jankowski 3 3 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 .333 .333 .333 .667 0 0 0 0 0
Wil Myers 3 1 0 0 0 0 0 2 0 .000 .667 .000 .667 0 0 0 0 0
Brad Hand 1 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 .000 .000 .000 .000 0 0 0 0 0
Total 26 22 9 3 0 1 1 4 1 .409 .500 .682 1.182 0 0 0 0 0

If there is any time to stop the slide, now is the time. The Padres are horrendous. They’re 7-15. 3-7 on the road and have one of the worst run differentials in all of baseball. They sit in last place in the National League West. The Dodgers on the other hand are now 12-11 and one more loss knocks them back to .500. Oh mediocrity, thou are a tempting face.

Go Blue!

  1. Wood’s splits show that he usually pitches well in LA, and he’s facing the Bad Pads. Expect a win tonight.

    1. Dodger Rick I would like to single you out for your excellent posts these past two days. There have been some really good posts here but yours seem to stand out. Kudos to you.

  2. With new breaking every ten minutes —– please do not start more files per day. Never sure where to post??

So far, for April 29, 3 files. April 28, 3 files. April 27, 2 files. — that is 8 files in 3 days.

Of, for the record. Front office, fire these three so call G.M.s and get a GM who knows how to create a roster to win. These 300 moves have to be the most un-exciting roster changes in the history of baseball. Period.

Hey, that Korean pitcher with ankle surgery, and TJ arm is sitting in a barber shop somewhere in Korea waiting for a phone call. I am sure he would be ready to play by, say, 2021. Sign him up !!!!!

      1. Scott, I feel that most post on the newest article or file — and let the older ones go for posting, even if they are 3 back for that same day. Just my opinion.

But, if it is your goal to have bold headlines on all Dodger new stories and feel that those coming to the site see the “flash, extra, extra, read all about it” then I understand. But some of us just want a place to post each day and talk together.

        1. Understood Roger. No problem. As I’ve said before, post wherever you want. Remember I have two other writers over here and generally there’s a pregame thread, which is normally where everyone will talk before the game, then there’s a postgame recap. In addition if there is major news, or a trade, or injury, or Oscar or Adrian want to write an opinion or analysis piece, then there might be 3 or 4 articles up for a day. It happens. But again, post wherever you want. You all have carte blanche for posting.

  3. Vargas was signed in 1999????

All kidding aside I laugh when the dodgers play this bad. It eases the pain…somewhat.

    Let’s win one tonight!

  4. Scott I agree with Roger on the numerous articles/ where-do-we-post comment.

Also, it’s 12-0 Mets over SF today in the 4th. Safe to say we got this!

    1. Bobby, as I said to Roger, you can post anywhere. There are no posting restrictions over here. Again there are NO POSTING RESTRICTIONS You can post anywhere man. You can have multiple conversation threads on multiple posts at the same time. Post on all of the articles. The game previews are normally the game threads, but again, post everywhere.

  5. Sometimes new stories might be added to the current existing post instead of creating a new post to let discussion continue and keep them alive.

I do check in on back posts to see if comments were added but I usually don’t add to previous posts.

For me I think of a post as the thing Scott put at the top and people comment and reply to comments in those posts. I guess we could say we post a comment whereas Scott posts a post.

    1. For me it depends on the conversation. I go back occasionally but, what might interest me may not interest others. I accept the fact that others don’t always know what’s interesting. I’m generous that way.

  6. I’ll be moving in the next couple weeks and this means I won’t have opportunities to view all the games as the only option will be to stream games through satellite internet and that just gets too expensive. It’s only temporary til I can find a place where cable and internet exists. Where I currently have to vacate is as downtown as they come, but I don’t think there’s a match for privacy. Ah shit! Guess the next chapter begins.

  7. About two days ago and 50 Posts ago, just kidding Scott, I asked if Luke Walton might become the next Laker Manager. 🙂

  8. 1) we again look horribly boring today, except Wood, who actually is pitching just fine for us.

    2) Welcome home, Coach Luke Walton!

  9. Agone the last few years has had hot starts, then cooled off considerably in May, then woke up again. Maybe his cool down has started early

  10. Hatcher doesn’t deserve to be mentioned with Worrell, who had a great career before coming to the Dodgers. But we still have Joe Blanton in reserve. Jeez.

You think the Friars might want to get out from under that awful Kemp contract?
