Memories From Vin Scully Night

Before Friday night’s game against the Colorado Rockies, the Dodgers began Vin Scully Weekend with an extended tribute that featured politicians, ex and present Dodgers, the Commissioner of Baseball, and Kevin Costner.

In case you missed the festivities, here are some photos and videos from the unforgettable night.

Sandy Koufax: “As many times as I’ve stood on this field, I’ve never been more nervous than this.”

Vinny and Kevin Costner.

Below, a humbled Vinny and proud Mrs. Scully…

The entire Costner speech is worth hearing. It had numerous poignant moments. The speech video is too big to upload in the post, but here is a link to the video: http://m.mlb.com/lad/video/topic/8911656/v1183998083/collad-costner-on-the-legacy-of-vin-scully/?c_id=la

And then, the Master spoke…

The boys in the press box were star struck…

Even the umps acknowledged the best there ever was…

The players lined Vinny’s way to the dugout. On the grass behind the mound, you can see where the Los Angeles Philharmonic, led by John Williams, played the National Anthem.

During the seventh inning stretch, Vinny led the singing of Take Me Out to the Ballgame. Then he dropped a banner to all of us…

What a glorious night it was.

  1. Boy, did FAZ dodge a bullet on this one, or what? Still can’t believe the angst here about FAZ not topping the $206M contract for this guy. I know, many thought he knew his body and would age like a fine wine. Old beer is more like it!!

An MRI to the shoulder of Diamondbacks ace Zack Greinke showed no structural damage, and manager Chip Hale said the right-hander could be available to start next week after all, according to the Arizona Republic.

“He’s fine,” Hale said, according to the Republic. “Just a little swelling. We’ll talk about his start. Probably not going to be able to start against the Nationals. We’ll have to decide who that’s going to be.”

Greinke had been questionable to make his final two starts of the season after experiencing shoulder stiffness Wednesday. While the Diamondbacks traveled to Baltimore for a three-game series with the Orioles, Greinke returned to Arizona to undergo the MRI.

Greinke missed more than a month before returning Aug. 3 because of tightness in his left oblique, an injury he suffered while batting in late June.

Greinke is 13-7 with a 4.37 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in his first season with the Diamondbacks after signing a six-year, $206.5 million contract in the offseason.

    1. At that contract? Dodged a HUGE bullet!! At the price they wanted to give him? Still dodged a huge one!

I admit I wanted him back. Perhaps he doesn’t get hurt here. Perhaps he’s more comfy as Kersh sidekick. Who knows. But either way it’s worked out ok for us and worked out very horribly for them.

Magic Number 2. Let’s party tonight! It’d be more fun celebrating if Bum lost for them today and Kersh won for us today

  2. “The Dodgers’ bullpen has pitched 559 innings, breaking the previous franchise record of 551 innings set in 2009.” per Dodgers.com.

    1. On McCullough’s podcast (with Pedro Moura) he mused that this is the strategy. To have pitchers only go 5-6 innings (with exceptions for merit) and have the bullpen consisting of different looks (arm angles, velocity and pitch selection) take it home from there.

  3. Best thing about Vin is he makes it look so easy, like he’s just talking to a bunch of his friends. Then he gives us, the fans, his gratitude. Just talk Vin, then let the voice fade into a whisper of memories. I pray there is a heaven where Vin will announce even bigger games… and maybe I can listen some day.

  4. I posted this on the last thread and want to make sure no one misses it:

FAZ plan is not complicated and I am incredulous that MJ and others don’t grasp it:

    1. First of all, the Dodgers do not act like a small market team – in case you haven’t checked, they have the highest payroll in baseball. So, small market team, my ass!

    2. The reason FAZ signed or traded for players like Kazmir (3 years/$45 million), Anderson (2 years/$30 million), McCarthy (4 years/$48 million), Maeda (6 years/$15 mil guaranteed), Wood (1 year/$500,000), Hill (1 year/$6 million) and Norris (1 year/$2.5 million) instead of paying someone like Greinke $207 million for 6 years is that you don’t know going forward what any player will do. The D-Bags owe Greinke all $207 million. The Dodgers owe all of those pitchers combined $147 million… and this year they outperformed Greinke! Hello! Past performance is no indicator of future accomplishments. FAZ was NEVER going to sign a long-term deal to any aging pitcher… even though they were in on almost every negotiation. Most long-term deals kill you.

    3. You sign injury-prone players because if they are not injury prone, they usually got those big $100 to $200 million dollar long-term deals. FAZ is not going to do that because they are not that stupid! Simple concept. Can you grasp that?

    4. Now, in the next two years, the Dodgers will have $60+ million come off the books (Gonzo, Andre and Crawfish). Then, you will see a long-term FA deal or two, but not with a 30-something star. That has been deemed moronic by sane people everywhere. If you disagree, they need to put you on a 72-hour mental health hold.

    5. If you don’t like sabermetrics then you should take up soccer because every MLB, NFL and NBA team has moved or is moving in that direction. No one should worship sabermetrics, but it’s another tool.

    6. Kershaw was the only current Dodger player up there with Vin last night. Why? I’ll tell you why: because Guggs and Company plan to make him a lifetime Dodgers along the lines of Sandy.

    7. I cannot even begin to overstate how much nearly everyone here bitch “FAZ didn’t fix the pen! No one even mentions it now that the Dodgers are #1 in all of MLB in bullpen efficiency !”

    8. There are supporters of this point of view here now, but 6 to 10 months ago, I was routinely skewered daily by many (most of who are now gone because they are too ashamed) as I defended what FAZ is/was doing. The story is not close to being told – time and history will tell the true story, but here we are poised to win our 4th consecutive NL West championship – EVER! I has happend just about like I predicted. Now, I am no genius (you all know that), but it ‘s easy to figure out, if don’t allow your biases to cloud your vision.

    9. All I am going to say is that I take a big picture view of things – you will drive yourself crazy trying to micro-manage every move (and some moves will be better than others and some will be bad). So far, the Big Picture is pretty good. We have a top farm system and FAZ signed some really good players (Hill, Toles, Reddick, Kendrick, Utley, Blanton, Liberatore, Ravin, Maeda, et al) who have helped a disastrous DL season turn into a Championship season (potentially). Yet, some of you still can’t enjoy it and I feel sorry for you.

    10. My advice is to enjoy this run – I think it has a shot of being pretty good.

    1. Bottom line, if you don’t make mistakes you’re probably sitting on your but doing nothing. FAZ so obviously know how to run a baseball operation, both the business and baseball sides. They are not, however, omniscient.

  5. This is basic Business 101. I run some businesses. Maybe my point of view is different. Maybe some believe cradle to grave the government should care for you. I call BS! You have to make a profit and make sense.

  6. Mark
I never said I don’t believe in saber metrics.

What I said, is that not all saber metric formulas, are the best way to value a player.

Even Friedman, only uses saber metrics as a tool.

Jason Heyward was given a lot of money, for his saber metric numbers.

And I don’t think Heyward is worth all of the money, the Cubs gave him.

And I didn’t want the Dodgers to sign him, for that reason.

And Hammels and that Royals pitcher, that was on the Dodgers, at the end of the season in 2014, didn’t cost a lot of Money and they make most of there starts.

And they didn’t get long contracts either.

Greinke and Price were not only signed to big contracts, because they make most of there starts, they were signed because of there performance through the years.

And by the way, I wasn’t the only one that wanted the Dodgers to sign Greinke, the front office also wanted to sign Greinke too.

And I do enjoy the team.

I have said for a long time, that Roberts has been one of the biggest factors, that are team is where they are now.

And my focus it more on the players, and Roberts, and his coaches, not the front office.

  7. Apparently Puig is not going to be started against right handers. I was really hoping he could get more ABs leading up to the play-offs.

    1. Hp Wolfe

Puig belongs in right more then Reddick does, on just what Puig has done since he came back.

Reddick just isn’t producing better then the other outfielders, and it isn’t even close.

I just think it is not fair to the other players, that have earned the playing time, and it isn’t the best line up for the team.

  8. From Dodgers.com:

“The Dodgers chose to scratch Hill due to continued concerns about a blister that forced him to miss a month earlier in the season and more recently ended a perfect game in the making after seven innings on Sept. 11. With the National League West nearly in hand, the Dodgers’ priority is to now make sure HIll is ready to give them as many innings as they need in the playoffs.”

So, the blister area is still an issue? I wonder how it would be if Roberts let him pitch two more innings? There is no merit to any argument against pulling hill from the perfect game. Yes, it was a tough decision, but Roberts has been vindicated!

  9. FAZ plan is not complicated and I am incredulous that MJ and others don’t grasp it:

AS I HAVE COMMENTED BEFORE, I HATE YOUR CONDESCENDING ATTITUDE AND THAT OF BLUTO AND BOXOUT. TAKING SHOTS AT MJ AND MICHAEL NORRIS IS UNNECESSARY AND IMPOLITE. SO, MJ USES THE INCORRECT “THERE” AND MICHAEL HAS A DIFFERENT VIEW THAN YOU – KNOCK OFF THE KNOW IT ALL STUFF.

    1. First of all, the Dodgers do not act like a small market team – in case you haven’t checked, they have the highest payroll in baseball. So, small market team, my ass!

THE DODGERS’ PAYROLL IS DOWN $85 MM THIS YEAR OVER LAST AND WHILE THEY HAVE SPENT UNTOLD MILLIONS ON VARIOUS AND SUNDRY CUBANS, THEY HAVE DONE VERY LITTLE TO IMPROVE THE BIG LEAGUE CLUB. THEY DO NOT RUN THE TEAM LIKE A LARGE MARKET TEAM.

ONLY MAEDA PITCHED WELL THIS YEAR. ONLY ANDERSON PITCHED WELL LAST YEAR. MOST OF THE MONEY THAT YOU HAVE MENTIONED GOING TO ANY OF THE OLD AND INFIRM HAS BEEN FLUSHED RIGHT DOWN THE TOILET. GREINKE HAD AN OFF YEAR – YOU THINK HE WILL PITCH LIKE THIS FOR HIS ENTIRE CONTRACT? WHAT ABOUT MCCARTHY AND KAZMIR WHOM WE ARE ON THE HOOK FOR FOR THE NEXT 2 YEARS? ANY HOPE THAT MCCARTHY WILL ACTUALLY BE ABLE TO THROW 100 INNINGS IN THE NEXT 2 YEARS? OR THAT KAZMIR WILL ACTUALLY BE ANY GOOD? IT ISN’T DEPTH IF THEY CAN’T PITCH!

    3. You sign injury-prone players because if they are not injury prone, they usually got those big $100 to $200 million dollar long-term deals. FAZ is not going to do that because they are not that stupid! Simple concept. Can you grasp that?

SO – IT’S BETTER TO PAY MCCARTHY $48MM OVER 4 YEARS TO NOT PITCH THAN IT IS TO PAY ZACH GREINKE TO ACTUALLY PITCH? CAN YOU GRASP THAT YOU CONDESCENDING EGOTIST?

MORONIC? NICE. 72 HOUR HOLD? DO YOU ACTUALLY KNOW ANYONE WHO WORKS IN THE MENTAL HEALTH SYSTEM WHO WORKS WITH THAT COMMUNITY? MY BROTHER DID – NOT A VERY NICE THING TO SAY.

    5. If you don’t like sabermetrics then you should take up soccer because every MLB, NFL and NBA team has moved or is moving in that direction. No one should worship sabermetrics, but it’s another tool.

SABRMETRICS (SPELL IT RIGHT) IS A TOOL LIKE ANY OTHER TOOL IN THE BOX. AS ONE PUNDIT PUT IT, IF ALL YOU HAVE IS A HAMMER, EVERY PROBLEM LOOKS LIKE A NAIL. OVERRELIANCE ON STATS IS BLINDNESS JUST AS CERTAINLY AS IGNORING THEM IS.

    6. Kershaw was the only current Dodger player up there with Vin last night. Why? I’ll tell you why: because Guggs and Company plan to make him a lifetime Dodgers along the lines of Sandy.

KERSHAW WILL BE OVER 30 WHEN HE CAN OPT OUT. IF HE DOES (AND I ASSUME THAT HE WILL), THE BRAINTRUST WILL NOT PAY HIM. “GUGGS AND COMPANY” ISN’T THE SAME AS THE BRAINTRUST AND ANYWAY, KERSHAW IS THE MOST POPULAR CURRENT DODGER. THE FACT THAT HE WISHED VIN BON VOYAGE DOES NOT MEAN THAT THEY WILL EXTEND HIM AFTER 2018.

    7. I cannot even begin to overstate how much nearly everyone here bitch “FAZ didn’t fix the pen! No one even mentions it now that the Dodgers are #1 in all of MLB in bullpen efficiency !”

THE BRAINTRUST ADDED BLANTON AND DAYTON AND LIBERTORE ON THE PLUS SIDE. (THEY ALSO BROUGHT US CHRIS HATCHER.) I DON’T KNOW WHAT BULLPEN EFFICIENCY IS. THEY HAVE A GOOD BUT OVERWORKED PEN. THEY WON’T HAVE JENSEN NEXT YEAR AND THERE IS NO ONE CURRENTLY ON THE ROSTER THAT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE CLOSE. THAT IS NEXT YEAR’S CONCERN I GUESS.

THE 1ST 2 DIVISION TITLES WERE WON BY THE COLLETI REGIME. MOST OF THE IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTORS TO THE LAST 2 TITLES WERE ALSO PROCURED BY THE PRIOR REGIME. IN 5 OR 10 YEARS WE WILL KNOW IF THE BRAINTRUST HAS REALLY IMPROVED THE TEAM.

ON THE CONTRARY, IT LOOKS LIKE THIS COULD BE A TEAM OF DESTINY. THIS BUNCH FINDS A WAY TO WIN EVEN THOUGH THE BRAINTRUST LAID AN EGG AND DIDN’T ASSEMBLE A DECENT STARTING ROTATION.

    10. My advice is to enjoy this run – I think it has a shot of being pretty good.

    11. So, the blister area is still an issue? I wonder how it would be if Roberts let him pitch two more innings? There is no merit to any argument against pulling hill from the perfect game. Yes, it was a tough decision, but Roberts has been vindicated!

YOU ASSUME THAT THE BLISTER IS REALLY A PROBLEM. WE HAVE NO EVIDENCE OF THAT. THEY MAY JUST BE GIVING HILL TIME OFF.

    1. Rick, you must be a good lawyer because most of your “facts” are not in evidence.

Yes, I would rather have all those pitchers I mentioned than Greinke and then you asked: GREINKE HAD AN OFF YEAR – YOU THINK HE WILL PITCH LIKE THIS FOR HIS ENTIRE CONTRACT?

No, I think he will pitch worse!

I said two years ago that this year the Dodgers would have to bring the payroll down this year due to they payroll tax and the fact they weren’t profitable. I was right!

I said FAZ would not sign expensive Free Agents to longer term deals. I was right!

I said the Dodgers would win more than 92 games this year and be competitive. I am probably right!

I said Grandal was a gem. I was right!

Over and over again, I have said what FAZ would do and I was right!

I do think Kaz and McCarthy can be very useful and like BOx said, look at what the Cards and Giants paid for mediocre starters.I’m not sure what else there is to do, so you take any credit away from FAZ and say “IT LOOKS LIKE THIS COULD BE A TEAM OF DESTINY. THIS BUNCH FINDS A WAY TO WIN EVEN THOUGH THE BRAINTRUST LAID AN EGG AND DIDN’T ASSEMBLE A DECENT STARTING ROTATION.

With that thinking, if they lose they are bums and if they win they are bums. Your argument is totally circular and totally without merit. You can do better than that counselor and I do confess that I misspelled sabermetrics.

It funny how people nitpick and some even resort to personal attacks when losing an argument.

FAZ has not been perfect, but they lowered payroll (HAD TO), built the farm and continued to win.

You say they didn’t assemble a decent starting rotation. Who knew Ryu and Kershaw would be injured? FAZ knew they had many youngsters coming up, so they did not want a bunch of big deals with free agents, so they signed KAZ, Anderson and McCarthy – they rolled the dice and the results are marginal, but here they are…In First Place

When Kershaw went down, I said this could help the team and guess what? You said “How could that possibly help?” Watch and learn!

For some reason you are just bitter about anything FAZ – I don’t understand it. This is an excellent team… a team that was ravaged with injuries (you will say it’s because they sign injury-plagued players, but that a small part of it), and has prevailed.

BTW, I have no ax to grind with MJ and Michael.

If I am a condescending egotist because hundreds (yes hundreds) of times (maybe thousands) because I come back and rub it in when I have been damned most of the season, then so be it! I’d rather be a condescending egotist than a grumpy loser! 😉

    2. Thanks Dodger rick,

I had a minor stroke about seven years ago.

Sometimes I have trouble spelling words, but once I see them I am fine.

The gramer problem is probably the same thing.

I know their is for people but I am not always sure, that is why I go with there.

I also do this on my iPhone and it is harder to see mistakes on it.

I don’t let Mark get to me.

  10. The FAZ strategy is simple. Instead of spending twice the payroll for one team, let’s spend it on two teams and rely on the DL and AAA loopholes to shuttle players back and forth.

Since we’re going to have 2 teams anyways while everyone else has one, we can roll the dice on 50% of the players, and if need be promote the kids.

The problem is they keep coming up with snake eyes on starting pitching.

I would improve on their strategy this way. Instead of paying for two teams, just pay for one and a quarter. And don’t roll the dice on starting pitching – trade for or bring up the young arms. Would we have done worse with Zach Lee pitching vs. Andersen, McCarthy, Kazmir, etc.? We would have had to use the bullpen anyways and we could have gotten a few more Zach Lees with the money thrown out. The young pitchers may find their way, especially with the coaches we have now. We have seen improvement over the course of the year – under Mattingly’s administration the team did not show much improvement over 3 years much less one.

And you do pay quality for vets. We gave up a number of prospects for a one year rental in Rich Hill (hopefully he’ll stay).

Like many here I just wish we go with younger healthier arms even if they projected as mediocre. Better than signing vets with arm histories — those are overpays. And if we weren’t supposed to question the FAZ then why are we questioning Colleti moves or the moves of other clubs? They’re all professionals supposedly and we know and see they screw up and sometimes in very obvious ways.

    1. I have no problem with questioning FAZ. I think giving up Montas Cotton and Holmes was a lot to pay for Hill and Reddick. They may not re-sign Hill but the story will be what happens to the three players we traded and what can Hill do for us this year? If we win it all – it’s worth that. We kept our core.

Anderson had a very good year last year and until this year, no player had accepted a QO. If we get two years from McCarthy – IT’S A GREAT DEAL. Believe it or not, KAZ has value.

Zack Lee will likely be out of baseball next year. He was 0-9 with a over 7.00 ERA after he was traded. He has a 13.50 ERA – Zach Lee can’t pitch!

So, they plugged in Bud Norris, Rich Hill and rookies and built the best bullpen in baseball. The only people who don’t screw up are those who don’t do anything and second-guessers. I look at their overall body of work and it is excellent… not perfect. However, it takes several years to figure it all out.

We are poised to win it all. I like a healthy Kershaw, Hill and Maeda in the playoffs. I love it when a plan comes together. Rest assured, this will not be their M.O. in the future. It’s just a stop-gap measure. I think they are building the perfect beast!

      1. He’s just suffering you gladly Rick.

He’s said before that he respects your takes.

Put in another way, we’re all suffering him too.

  11. Couple stats and numbers that get thrown out there are “The Dodgers lowered the payroll by $85million.” Sure that ‘stat’ is true, but the real truth is the $85 million lowered from last year’s team includes money that was being paid to guys that weren’t on the 2015 team. For example, we paid like $18mil towards Matt Kemp last year, and only $3mil this year. There’s a $15mil difference. I believe last year we paid $10 for Brian Wilson, who wasn’t on the team. That $10 and Kemp’s $18 make a $28 mil decrease, but it didn’t affect the actual players on the field’s salaries. Kemp and Wilson weren’t 2015 Dodgers and they aren’t 2016 Dodgers. Sure, we saved $23mil on Greinke, but then that was offset by the money spent on Kazmir, Anderson (who got a raise from 2015), Maeda. We saved $9 mil from Rollins coming off the book, since he was replaced by a rookie. I believe Howie is being paid less this year than last.

While I agree with both sides of the discussions about our management, I won’t just rattle out a baseless stat, while technically true, just to prove my point. Common sense tells me the $85 mil decrease thing is like saying “there’s 46,000 in the stands”. When we all really know it’s 46,000 tickets sold but only 27,000 at the game.

As far as Rich Hill, I understand and applaud Doc even more now that he took Hill out of the perfect game. I said it then, that it was the right decision because of his blister, and I didn’t bitch that I was entitled to see a perfect game because I had been a fan for such a long time, and therefore Doc HAD to let Hill stay in the game. This is about October, not September. I’m glad he’s out tomorrow. If need be, keep him out until Game 2 vs Wash

Now, more importantly, SF blew a huge lead and are tied 6-6 in the 8th!!

    1. Like Bobby, I knew a not all of the payroll is for the current team.

I just don’t want to go over this front office stuff.

And I really think it is somewhere in the middle.

But Bobby made the right point, the team is playing really well.

And they are playing much like we have always wanted them to play like.

And the Giants have choked up there big lead.

And I give most of the credit to Roberts and his coaches, as well as the players.

They are the ones that made this team play as a team, and play hard as a team.

And the players, took Roberts instruction to heart, and that is why they are where they are, right now.

And I do believe fate plays a big part in this.

  12. Wow!!! I can take a little bit of everyone’s posts and find good in all of them. My beef is Mark and his bold typing. Mark, you are the only one who has that ability, why do you continually do it? When nobody else can? Just ask in?

  13. Wow, thanks for the education. Unfortunately it is a lot easier for you on the website. Mark how about just not using the bold type? It is truly unjust and annoying . As I have said many times in the past, you have great dodger knowledge and are a great cheerleader, but the in people’s face stuff like the continual bold type is just annoying. Nobody else uses it. The bold type stuff is not professional at all. Especially from an “owner of multiple businesses.”
You have the keys to the website so please use them with class and respect for others.

    1. I, for one, have NO problem with Marks bold type. Sometimes I skim though what seems like 1000 word post but the BOLD Type makes me hesitate and re-read the words in BOLD print.
I have a sneaking feeling that’s exactly what Mark intended for us to do.

Wow, thanks for the education. Unfortunately it is a lot easier for you on the website. Mark how about just not using the bold type?

So Scott is to Mark as Dave Roberts is to FAZ?
