The Militarization of Sports – Patriotism or Cashing In on War?

An article was published a few days ago about a couple of veterans who are speaking out against the militarization of sports and the commercializing that is coming along with that.

The state of perpetual war that we find ourselves in and this exploiting of veterans for profit is a topic that strikes close to my personal values, so I fired up the ol’ video camera and delivered a few takes of my own.

Give a watch and don’t forget to give a “Like” on the Youtube channel. Much appreciated.

I was born in the shadow of Dodger Stadium and immediately drenched in Dodger Blue. Chavez Ravine is my baseball cathedral, Vin Scully was the golden voice of summer all my life, and Tommy Lasorda remains the greatest Dodgers manager ever. My favorite things are coffee, beer, and the Dodgers beating the Giants. I also blog about my baseball card hobby at All Trade Bait, All the Time.

  1. Appreciate the effort Oscar. I have a strong opinion on this issue, and I’m sure it parallels yours. But this isn’t the venue to express those views. As we can see from the lack of response, posters do not want to discuss it here.

We are who we are here in this country. Write letters, speak up, and most importantly, get off your lazy ass America and VOTE! If you do not speak up then others will speak for you, the results of which I find appalling. This isn’t what I fought for….. or is it? We are currently getting exactly what we deserve.

Thanks for speaking up. But, back to baseball.

    1. Thanks for your input, Badger. I figured most of the usual posters here didn’t know what to make of my post, or didn’t want to give an opinion for fear of setting off an argument. That had to be it, since nobody seems to be shy about letting me know when they don’t like my pieces, lol.

While I understand you would prefer I simply write about balls and strikes, I would prefer the MLB not bring the military into my day at the ballpark in order to make a quick buck off war. I’ve always written about subjects that go beyond the diamond, and I will continue to do so. That said, I appreciate your feedback. It’s welcome, positive or negative, any time. – OM

      1. I agree with you. Obviously I support those willing to serve, but what we see here is a PR campaign. Ef that. If MLB really cares they can give generously to the various organizations out there that are helping Veterans – and they can do it surreptitiously.
