Morning Dodger Baseball: Kazmir vs. Bailey in Series Finale

Scott Kazmir

This is the earliest Dodger game you will watch this year. With a start time of 9:10 AM PST/12:10 PM EST the game will be over before lunch on the west coast. So grab your coffee and wake up early for some Dodger baseball in the morning.

It’s a happy morning for the Dodgers as they wake up back in first place. Rookie phenom Julio Urias gave the club something they sorely needed, a quality start. Thanks to his 6 shutout innings, a Chase Utley home run and a couple of well timed RBIs from Corey Seager, the Dodgers were able to beat the Reds 4-0 on Sunday afternoon. That coupled with the Giant’s 2-0 loss to the Mets on Sunday night baseball put the Dodgers back in first place by a half game.

Game Time 9:10 AM – TV-SNLA

That’s what I love the most about this team, their ability to pick themselves up from the boot straps and come back. After two consecutive blowout losses the Dodger win on Sunday gives the Reds a 2-1 series lead. The Dodgers will try for a series split today before flying back home to open a huge game home stand with the Giants. Since the Giants are idle today, a Dodger win would put them one game ahead in the standings before the big series starts on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium.

So today it is up to left hander Scott Kazmir (10-6 4.41) to get the Dodgers a win before they hit the road back home. Kazmir beat the Reds back on May 25 by tossing 6 innings of one-run ball and striking out 12. He notched a win in his last start against the Phillies by giving up 2 earned runs on 8 hits over 5 innings. The Dodgers won that game 7-2 but Kazmir oddly only struck out one. Kazmir is undefeated on the road this year with a 6-0 record and a 4.77 ERA. The veteran is 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA in 2 career starts against the Reds.

The Reds will counter with Homer Bailey. The 30-year old right hander and former first round pick is recovering from Tommy John surgery and has had many setbacks along the way. This is his fifth start this season and he is 2-1 with a 3.66 ERA with 27 strikeouts against 6 walks. He’s allowed 9.6 hits per nine across 19.2 innings pitched. Bailey has thrown two no-hitters in his career before he blew out his arm.

He has a two-seamer, four-seamer, and three different breaking balls. He also throws a slider, curve, and splitter. Bailey is 4-3 with a 3.84 ERA in 9 career starts against the Dodgers. Adrian Gonazlez clearly has Bailey’s number. Gonzo is hitting .435 (10 for 23) with 5 home runs against Bailey.

  1. Early starting time reminds me of waking up to the Gillette Blue Blade for the quickest slickest shave of all song before the World Series in the 50″s.

  2. In other news, Josh Reddick was scratched with a jammed finger.

In still other news, Dave Roberts was seen pounding on Josh Reddick’s finger while Andrew Toles held him down!

    1. Mark
You beat me to the punch!

Anyways I hope that Toles has a big day, and we win this game, and then get ready for the Giants for tommorow night.

  3. Not worth repeating but oh well–

Roberts has a bunch of coaches and trainers that he can think with and hopefully come up with the right lineup and rotation. FAZ will have final say about De Leon joining the rotation.

An outfield of Toles, Pederson, and Reddick would be the best defensively but now is not the time to start giving lefty hitters a look at lefty pitching. It was smart to get Joc fixed first before exposing him again to lefties. That can be done next year.

But, taking a player, Joc, that is OPSing .842 mostly against righties out of the lineup against lefties is hard to replace. Add to that the drops in performance by Agon, Seager, Utley, Grandal, Reddick against lefties and there is no wonder why the Dodgers sputter against lefties.

Duke Snider benefitted from all the right handed hitters he played with in that most teams would make some attempt to not pitch a lefty against that them of Campanella, Hodges, Reese, Robinson, and Furilo. The Dodgers need a right handed Duke Snider to take advantage of teams that try their best to start lefties against the Dodgers.

Reggie Smith was the lefty, I know switch hitter, that protected the Dodgers against all the righties against Cey, Baker, and Garvey not to mention Russel and the Toy Cannon.

Puig and Turner haven’t been lefty killers, Kike’ is rusty, Thompson has a broken back and Puig might not be back on the team anyway. The best prospects are lefty swingers in Barringer and Verdugo,

Maybe more than pitching the Dodgers need a stud righty bat that would allow Pederson to stay in CF now and Toles in LF, Barringer at 1st base, and Verdugo in RF for the future. I am talking about a Duke Snider/Reggie Smith type of righty bat (for thosse that are overly literal, I know that Snider was a lefty bat).

If a trade were made now, Cespedes might be the best fit that might be posibly made. Puig and something else would be my idea.

    1. Cepedes would be a problem like Puig, but he has had better stats then Puig lately.

Cespedes had an sore something, but he still played golf before his game, so almost the same type of problem, that Puig has been.

I don’t think the Mets would do that trade, until the year of Cepedes’ opt out.

But would the front office trade Puig for another player, that causes much the same issues?

        1. Bum
I will have to think about that.

And after Reddick hasn’t worked out, I think it would be better, to think about someone in the National league.

        2. Almost every player gets placed on waivers during this month. Teams like to see who will be claimed and if you remember quite a few years ago, the Yankees claimed Jose Canseco to block him from going to the Red Sox and got stuck with his contract when their claim was honored. Right now the Dodgers are in a bad spot waiver wise because the Giants could claim and block someone they might want.

  4. Trying to be positive here and believing we will see the good Scott Kazmir this morning and not his evil twin,.

      1. And according to the lineup posted on dodgers.com, Reddick is batting 6th and in RF….no Toles…..sorry to burst the comedy bubble. and Scott. the game is at 9:35 not 9:10

  5. Unbelievable!
Actually it’s standard operating procedure now. Oh well time for the bullpen rotation to get circulating.

  6. We have the evil Kazmir today it seems. It’s awful for the Dodgers to score 6 in 3 innings and only be up by 2. We gotta’ get better starting pitching.

  7. I really dislike watching Kazmir pitch. He’s looked like this all year except today instead of HR’s, he gave up some bloop hits. Every hitter is deep in the count, a ton of walks, and usually a dinger or two.

He reminds me of Ted Lilly on his bad days except Ted could work in some gems. I remember about 1 or 2 actual nice outing by Kazmir this year.

  8. Tole takes a toll on the Reds, and Segdein gets in the fun too!

And Kazmir just sucks, why do we have to have this guy?

  9. Aug trade deadline is a week away.

I propose we send our veterans Rich Hill and Josh Reddick to Oakland for 3 prospects, who may or may not make it. How bout we ask them for Grant Holmes, Jharrel Cotton, and Frankie Montas??

    Just throwing out some ideas.

Anyone remember the last time we hit 4 hr in 1 inning??

    1. Funny. If Hill and Reddick don’t come through it also makes the 3way deal with Cincy look bad.

I was feeling good about good about Trayce, Montas, and Johnson. Especially Montas. Now Trayce is out, Montas plus others are gone, and Johnson has been mediocre at AAA.

    2. yeah, last time was the game they hit 4 HR’s in the ninth inning to tie the Padres and then Garciaparra hit a homer in the 10th to win it.

  10. Eleven runs! Close contest today between our hitters and our pitching staff. Wonder what Badger would say the over/under is between them?

  11. Roll with Toles and Segedin for the next two weeks, and go with a 6 man rotation the rest of the way until Kershaw gets back.

I’d like to see Dayton go for at least 2 innings here with a big lead.

  12. I haven’t followed the game this am. My brain is focused on tomorrow. Will tomorrow’s game against the giants be the beginning of a culture of winning that has escaped this team for years? Will the new blood finally break through and beat the 3 time champions? It HAS to begin sometime, unless we are forever doomed to division titles i.e., kissing your sister. The giants have lined up their horses, much as Mattingly did last year against them. We must score, score, score. I hope there are 0 giants jerseys in the stands tomorrow. Just blue and white. And loud.

    1. I don’t think neither team are any good, at this point in the season.

Still a lot of games left between the two teams.

  13. I very much doubt Reddick could do half as well as Puig has at OKC. I would imagine he has passed waivers already with no takers…

  14. On Puig: I read the team is still shopping him. Another team in a pennant race could use his bat?, but he has the potential to really piss off the players on his contending team. Not worth the risk. Our team has the same problem with him.

    1. Don’t sleep on Agone, he has three HRs today.

Mark we might make your twenty prediction, that four players, will hit twenty HRs this year.

  15. Now Kazmir has some health issue. He may be added to the DL. I’m sure nobody here is crying

Like I said Friday, Because Cincy was playing so well I would def take a split in the 4 game series on the road. We went to 2 cities. We won 2-1 and split 2-2. I’ll take that on the road, especially since Cincy has the 2nd best record in baseball since the break.

Dave Roberts is my manager of the year.

Tomorrow the season begins. Us vs them. Does it get any better ??

    1. Bobby
      Is that true about Kazmir?

I heard in the back ground on intentional talk, that a player jammed there finger getting a food delivery.

      That must be Reddick.

Unfortunately we need Kazmir as our number five in the rotation.

I didn’t hear that but I wasn’t paying attention totally.,

      1. Andy McCullough
Andy McCullough – Verified account ‏@McCulloughTimes

Scott Kazmir has been dealing with back and neck issues. The team doctors will examine him tomorrow in LA.

  16. Well with an offensive outburst that would have made the Bronco’s proud we were able to overcome the appearance of Kazmir’s evil twin. It was bombs away on getaway day! 7 homers. I was at Dodger Stadium years ago when they hit 7 homers and beat the Reds 18-1. Pitching that day was obviously better on our side.
