Ninth Inning Dodgers Heroes Step Up To Crush Giants Hopes

Dodgers vs Giants. Kershaw vs Bumgarner. Puig vs Bumgarner. Lots of bad blood. The NL West title on the line. If you need more hype than that, you’re not a baseball fan.

1st inning
1,2,3 inning. Job done for Kersh.

2nd inning
Dodgers
Yasiel Puig with a double.
Yasmani Grandal was plunked on the elbow.
Two on, two out.
Utley was called out on strikes. Bumgarner barely caught a half-inch of the plate.

3rd inning
Nuñez got on with a single. He stole second and took third on a bad throw from Grandal. Kershaw then WP him home. 0-1

4th inning  0-1
Kershaw held them scoreless. Pitch count: 40 pitches

5th inning
1,2,3 inning and 5 Ks total for Kersh. Pitch count: 75
Dodgers still not scoring, or threatening to score, or looking anything close to capable of scoring.

6th inning  0-1
7 in a row retired for Kershaw. Pitch count: 87.
Dodgers
Rob Segadin to PH for Kershaw. HBP! The second Dodger hit tonight. Hmmm.
Base runner, no out, top of the lineup. What would the Dodgers do?
Two quick outs. Then Bum threw way high and way tight to Corey Seager, dropping him to the ground.
He eventually struck him out to leave the hit batter on first.

7th inning. 0-1
Kershaw out – Pedro Baez in. He got it done.
Dodgers
RHUBARB!! RHUBARB!!
With two out, Puig bounced one to Bum. After he threw Puig out at first, he said, “F** yeah!” And then he kept saying to Puig, “Don’t look at me.” (All the while staring at Puig)  Yasiel moved in and said, “What will you do to me?”  Benches cleared. Both players were furious, but kept apart. Nothing much happened, but it looked close for a minute there.

8th inning 0-1
With two outs, Carlos Ruiz PH for a single. Out for a pinch runner. Then everyone was out. Sheesh.

9th inning
Dodgers last three outs.
Andrew Toles: Single! Who’s surprised?
Corey Seager: Single! Toles to third!
Justin Turner: Single! Toles scores! 1-1

Adrian Gonzalez: BLAMMO! A blast to the wall. Hunter Pence leaped up, but it glanced off his glove to score Seager, who belly flopped on the plate to score the winning run!

Dodgers Walkoff Win! 2-1

Kershaw did a great job tonight of holding the Giants to three hits and only one run – and that run scored through errors and wild pitches. Unfortunately, Madbum had the Dodgers equally tied up in knots.

But these gritty Dodgers just – don’t – give – up! They needed a spark, and they got it from underplayed Andrew Toles. He started that ninth inning rally. Corey Seager kept it going with his increasingly clutch hitting, and of course, the butter and eggs man came through with the big hit.

Lots of us wanted to see Yasiel come up and get the game winner, as he was batting behind Gonzo, but he’s got two more games to be the hero.

The Giants looked destroyed as they headed out of their dugout and into their collective sadness. It was beautiful!

Kershaw went 6 innings with 3 hits, 1 run, 1 walks, 7 Ks.  ERA 1.73

  1. The only bad part is that they did not tag the Mad Dumb with a loss…..but they kept him from winning and that is almost as good. How sweet it is! And the Giants continue one of the most epic collapses in MLB history……

    1. Michael
What we did to Bumgarner was worse.

His mouth plus his pitch count, got him out of the game early, because he was close to about 94 pitches.

He had to sit on the bench, and watch his team crumble, and he couldn’t do a thing.

He actually deserved to leave the game, because of his mouth.

I wish someone would knock him in the mouth, one of these days, because he does this all the time.

And he never talks that way to any American white players.

      1. Big D would have flattened him. The Giants have been losing like that most of the 2nd half, so with a 1 run lead, he probably expected the worst. The best part was the Gnats got no outs at all in the 9th. 4 straight hits and see ya later!

  2. Two things.

    1. Gonzo’s walk off double was an error. I could have caught that. I am not nitpicking, I think it’s the truth and the truth hurts the Giants more that it was catchable.

    2. The Giants bench emptied first (they were closer), but Puig was ready to take on them all. Sometimes you need a knucklehead to light a fire; just saying.

    1. Not according to the official scorer, and that’s the one that counts. Besides, you give Pence an error and the run is unearned and Gonzo loses a ribbie…..not kosher….

      1. It looked like Pence lost it for a mere second, in the lights, but I would have to see it again.

It wasn’t as easy as it looked.

        1. He should have caught that ball. Once he failed he should have hustled to throw that ball back in. That’s his job. So it should be two errors.

          1. Coulda shoulda woulda, He didn’t and the official scorer disagrees with all ya all….it was a double and Adrian gets a much deserved ribbie. If it was an error, he loses that.

  3. Let’s give the bullpen some credit. They shut the Giants down the last four innings.

Two rookies and two veterans did it . Toles, Seager, Turner and Agon. Nice combination. Toles may have to wait his time this year, but he will be there next year.

  4. Sometimes knuckleheads are good!

You know, I really like Puig’s potential, but I just think we are going to be saying that forever and I hope he proves me wrong.

    1. He just rubs Bum the wrong way. I would have loved it had he hit another dinger off him and flipped the bat. The double almost made it out.

    2. He’s been a knucklehead at times; both on the field and off. Fortunately NOT since he came back from the minors and NOT last night. Punkgarner was the knucklehead. The “F-yeah” for getting Puig out is understandable momentary excitement. The “Don’t look at me” was juvenile and a provocation. Puig COULD have said “F You” back at him but didn’t. Last night was satisfying on several levels.

  5. Andrew Toles was signed to a minor league contract, but when promoted to the Major League Roster, he is now under Dodgers control for 5 years.

    1. I think you had better re check that Mark. He was a minor league free agent, and the Dodgers were not his original team. I do not think they control his contract rights for 5 years. Not sure, but I think that I am right.

  6. The benches emptied Monday night in another epic battle between the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers and team aces Madison Bumgarnerd and Clayton Kershaw. A quote after the melee.

Bruce Bochy: “I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve”.

        1. Isoroku, made that statement, so Bochy is a plagiarist…………..someone really ought to belt Bumgarner right in his snot locker…….the guy is an ass.

          1. To be fair, I don’t think that is the exact quote. Yes, he expressed that sentiment and referred to the US as a sleeping giant, but I think that exact quote was written for the movie Tora Tora Tora.

      1. I think you’re right Patch. It was Yamamoto after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Not sure where it was said but another Japanese(General) said: “Hell is upon us”.Very appropiate.

    1. I don’t think Bochy actually said that last night, although he might have. Boxout7, was just using his telepathic abilities and surmised that was what Bochy was thinking when he looked over at the Dodger Dugout, just prior to the Dodgers batting in the ninth.

  7. I looked at that last play 30 times and my conclusion is….I’m shocked Pence didn’t catch that ball, I imagine he is too. I’m sure Dodgers would have scored and won the game even if he does catch it. Awesome seeing Bum just mortified both when Puig looked at him and when the Dodgers walked off with the win. He was absolutely beside himself. He could really use about a year of anger management. LOL

  8. You think DM told Puig to go out and pisz Bum off to get him out of the game. If he did he’s a genius. You think… is it possible that Bum is a racist. Puig is rather ethnic and it seems to just set Bum off.

    1. It’s possible he’s racist who knows, but I will say if he weren’t white his good ole boy routine wouldn’t fly. Everyone got sick of Juaquin Andujars act years ago. Mario Soto too.

    1. Bumgarner is absolutely a bully, and pretty much a bad sport too. Puig wasn’t trying to show him up, he was trying to show Puig up…..guy is despicable…

  9. Sometimes I wish the Mad Bum had the opportunity to try that crap when Big D was a Dodger. Half the Giant team would be brushing dirt off their uni’s, and the Bum definitely would have heard some chin music. Another thing. How come Pederson got run for a little gesture in Az and Pagan stayed at the plate more than a minute arguing that call with the ump and was allowed to stay in the game????? Some sort of frippen double standard goin on here.

    1. I don’t care what Pagan did but I do care what Joc did. He showed up the umpire. He immediately turned around to face the umpire, held out his hands where fans could clearly see he was protesting, and said WTF.

Joc needs to control himself. He has at least stopped slamming his bat on the ground or tossing his bat after striking out but still needs to keep his cool more. At least he never took his trantrum all the way back to the dugout.

      1. Maybe, but Pagan should have been tossed for arguing balls and strikes…you cannot do that. Joc is still a kid and his emotions got the better of him. Had no affect on the out come of the game….

  10. Ok, I’m gonna Be the one that says it by mentioning what no one else has yet. Does anyone else suspect Bum of juicing? The home runs and the displays of what COULD be ‘roid rage”?

    1. No he just tosses hay bales around when he is at home……..his displays of anger are called bad sportsmanship…………..naw, maybe you are right…..Roid Rage…..

      1. There’re been too many other big cornfed country boy pitchers in the past to believe it’s just his upbringing. Though his country roots MAY be at odds with Puig’s “Roots” if you catch my drift. I hope I’m wrong about both ideas but I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets caught.

Drysdale would have Bum getting up out of the dirt looking through his ear hole. And when Bum didn’t like it Don was plenty big enough to give as good as he got too!

  11. The Giants have more holes in their hull than the Titanic……….I know, bad reference but I just could not pass it up….

  12. Not to be a pessimist, but it ain’t over yet. Let’s win tonight. And then on Wed. Bumgarner’s crap plays when his team wins. He’s really just a punk when he pitches. Just walk off the field and shut up. No class. I think the giants’ collective pot is boiling over. The whining is deafening. Remember “torture”? This is what real baseball torture feels like, giants fans. How does it feel? This is Robert’s team, no question. Mattingly’s group couldn’t get out of its own way late in the game. These guys are just the opposite. Robert’s resolve after Kershaw got hurt and the leadership in the clubhouse has made this team what it is. Seager plays like a ten year veteran. Quiet performance. Great win. Dayton is really good. We got him for Chris Reed. It might turn out to be a good #1 pick after all.

  13. B17 said “Dayton is really good. We got him for Chris Reed. It might turn out to be a good #1 pick after all.” Great way to look at it!

Even the Baseball Tonight guys last night like Aaron Boone were saying that was all Bum for instigating that. F him. I hope they stick that even year garbage up his Bum when they’re finally eliminated. Of course, playing them in the NLCS would be one of the craziest things ever! Let’s see.

Obviously huge win. Broke their morale, after they had us thru 8 innings. A win tonight will crush them. Go Rich Hill!

    1. Bumgarner and the Giants, are now feeling what Kershaw and the Dodgers had to deal with, in the last few years, with an unreliable bullpen.

  14. In 2014 the Giants had to watch the Dodgers celebrate clinching the Division against the Giants and wound up winning the WS as the wild card.

    1. Bum
Yes that is because the Giants have no problem beating the Cardinals.

And we can beat the Giants better then the Cardinals can.

I still think the Cardinals, had something on Kershaw, to beat him like they have.

        1. Bum
In that last game against the Cardinals, I don’t believe any Cardinals got on base, because Kershaw was pitching a no hitter, up until that 7th inning.

Until they had those two infield singles, they didn’t have anyone on second, to relay the pitches.

          1. I don’t buy it at all MJ. Are people saying that when AJ telegraphed pitches it was only visible from second base?

  15. What I have been told is that some think AJ was tipping Kershaw’s pitches.

I have tried to see if that was the case but I can’t tell.

At any rate, FAZ wanted AJ gone with a quickness.

      1. He sure has……his end of the bench is really warm……makes it more comfortable for the next guy…And of course, Grandal goes into another tail spin when they do not need him to.

        1. And Clayton has thrown just fine without his BFF. Ruiz is an upgrade at every aspect of the game and he’s even been able to nurse Bud Norris through 5 or 6 innings against the Cubs. The ERA is excellent when Ruiz is catching.

          1. AJ has contributed a few times in PA and Ruiz has yet to do so here. 5 X 0 = 0 just as does 3 X 0 = 0

  16. According to True Blue LA’s roster and salary page, Toles is under team control for 5 years as Mark has indicated. He was signed as a minor league free agent so he has 3 options left (he was called up for the 1st time this year).

        1. Doesn’t mean he is a lock to make the team next year……count the OF……Thompson, Pederson, Ethier, Puig, Hernandez, Kendrick will be in the mix, Verdugo is coming, SVS, and the beat goes on……Barnes and Segedin can play the OF too, and who knows, FAZ might resign Reddick…god forbid….

          1. Not to many players are a lock, but I don’t think Toles has a problem, with a healthy competition.

And he has been fine sitting and waiting for his turn, since he was called back up.

And that says a lot about him.

        2. He has been good, but that does not guarantee he does the same thing next year…….stuff happens…..They might cut Ethier in spring training and eat his contract ala Crawford, but I doubt it.

  17. And after all that hoopla, rhubarb, and celebration our Dodgers are capable of losing the next two. It’s just the way our Dodgers play.

  18. If I were hitting off Cueto (assuming I could actually hit). I would repeatedly step out of the box when he was set. He tries all of the quick pitch stuff and when he gets into a rhythm, he is tough. I’d make him loose his rhythm.

    Bye Bye Bud Norris!

    1. Mark

If they get runners on base, that is another way to get to him.

They say he bothers hitters more like Turner, that uses that leg lift, as there timing mechanism.

In softball quick pitching is ilegal, a pitcher must stop and present the ball.

  19. I’m definitely rooting a Toles to win that LF spot next year. Kendrick could be the super utility player. 2nd base will be the big question mark along with the futures of Puig and Ethier.

  20. Important Dodgers Memorabilia at auction: Marble Ebbets Field Plaque from the stadium, 1913. Thought some of you old guys (like me) might like to know about this.
    https://new.liveauctioneers.com/item/47644426_important-ebbets-field-1913-marble-plaque-from-the

It’s at JMW auction in Kingston, NY. Don’t be afraid of the $7,500 open–things often go for way less than opening bid here. Looks like a great piece to me…buy it for yourself…buy if for Brooklyn…or maybe Mark should buy it for Badger as a peace offering (yeah, right). Or maybe it’s a chance for FAZ develop some real Dodgers bonafides and buy it for the Clubhouse or the Dugout. Anyway, hope someone with real team creds buys it–and enjoys it!

  21. From Puig’s Facebook page where he and two buddies are wearing T shirts which say: #DontLookAtMe #PuigNotLookingAtYou

I hope this guy can step up his game. I would hate to lose him.

  22. I wish everyone would come back, especially with what the Dodgers are doing right now.

It must be hard to stay away, especially after last night’s game.
