Rich Hill Deserves to Pitch Opening Day – the Dodgers Owe Him

With Clayton Kershaw out, the Dodgers have announced Hyun-Jin Ryu is the front-runner to pitch on Opening Day. They couldn’t be more wrong. Dick Mountain deserves that ball – the Dodgers owe it to him.

I was born in the shadow of Dodger Stadium and immediately drenched in Dodger Blue. Chavez Ravine is my baseball cathedral, Vin Scully was the golden voice of summer all my life, and Tommy Lasorda remains the greatest Dodgers manager ever. My favorite things are coffee, beer, and the Dodgers beating the Giants. I also blog about my baseball card hobby at All Trade Bait, All the Time.

  1. The Dodgers owe him nothing. He is paid a lot of money to do a job. He is of course everyone’s sentimental pick to replace CK. But Ryu is the better pitcher. They want to win game one and right now it has not been settled who is going to be on the bump.

    1. I don’t think anyone outside this blog is really concerned about the decision, least of all Rich Hill.

The Dodgers just want to win. Probably the match up and subsequent opposing pitchers would factor into it.

It’s liberating and a sign of maturity to come to the realization that the world does not owe you anything.

      1. I don’t think anyone on this blog has any concern actually. Maybe there is some concern over there at the Pedro Philes or whatever it is called. Maybe you should stick over there patch, as you seem to have a real bug up your ass with this blog.

  2. Opening day starter is merely ceremonial. Not worth a discussion, much less a blog post.

But since it was brought up….

It’s about a ZILLION times more fun watching Hill pitch than Ryu.

  3. Michael……..Agreed! Ryu should be the one……..Six years a Dodger, in the Kershaw/Greinke shadow and largely over looked……. it should be Ryu!

  4. I just hope it is a real starter and not some bullpen game or “piggyback” game. I am setting my standards low…

If I was forced to pick, Hill.

  5. I’ll take Ryu

    I didn’t watch the video so I don’t know
why Oscar would say the Dodgers owe Hill an Opening Day start. They do owe him $18,666,666. For that he doesn’t really have to do anything.

  6. Hill will be out for several weeks after MRI.

Looks like Ferguson and Urias will need to step up. Or Santana.

No more dumpster dives please. Let the kids play.

  7. Urias, Ferguson and Garcia make the team. Gonsolin sent to AAA. Only 1 roster spot left, since there is not a real long man on the roster with Stripling being forced into the rotation because of injuries, looks like it might be either Stewart or Santana. I think Stewart will get the nod. Rotation is Ryu, Maeda, Stripling, Buehler and Urias.

    1. I like that rotation. But I see none of them as even a 7 inning starter and every one of them needing time off before the All Star break. We may be forced to go with Gonsolin, May and Santana sooner than preferred. The only guy on this roster I see as an All Year player is Bellinger.

      1. Totally agree. Roberts has said to not be surprised if Gonsolin and May get blooded this season.

That’s the benefit of depth, and the curse of the trend to reduce arm usage.

        1. I think it’s depth only if they can step in and step up. Every team has the same number of players in their organization. Even the stinko giants have people available. They don’t have depth, they have people.

I hope we do see these guys this year and I hope they give this team depth by being good.
