Rich Hill Makes Dodger Debut Against Cueto And Giants

Rich Hill

The Dodgers (70-55) have turned into the Red Sox or the Blue Jays or something. They just won’t stop hitting. The offense has been carrying this club on its back and it’s incredible. The Dodgers have now scored 28 runs in their last two games. Tuesday night’s opener against the Giants saw the Dodgers plate 9 runs on 14 hits in their 9-5 win.

The Dodgers scored one run in each of the first three frames and then tacked on another two runs in the fifth inning to knock Madison Bumgarner out of the game. And wasn’t it sweet seeing him walk off the field sad? Blue collar wondermen Rob Segedin and Andrew Toles each hit another home run and Justin Turner and Corey Seager each had 3 hits apiece. Everyone contributed; even Kike Hernandez had two hits. The win puts the Dodgers two games ahead in the NL West.

Now the Dodgers must strike when the iron is hot and extend that lead. They’ll give the ball to Rich Hill who will make his Dodger debut. The Giants will try and even the series behind Johnny Cueto. It’s anyone’s guess how many blisters will appear after tonight’s start.

Dodgers vs. Giants

Johnny Cueto-14-3 vs. Rich Hill-9-3

Game Time – 7:10 PM – TV-SNLA

For Cueto, he’s having a great season by all accounts. He is 14-3 with a 2.90 ERA in 25 starts. He’s whiffed 152 and walked 33 in 173.2 innings pitched. He’s posted a 1.088 WHIP and allowed 8.1 hits per nine innings pitched. He’s had a bit of a rough month posting a 4.44 ERA in August. This is his fourth time this season facing the Dodgers and he is 2-0 with a no-decision. Cueto is 4-5 with a 3.06 ERA in 11 career starts against the Dodgers. He is also 2-4 with a 3.03 ERA in 6 starts at Dodger Stadium. Chase Utley hits Cueto well to the tune of a .355 (11 for 31) average with two home runs. Unfortunately he’s been dealing with a foot injury and may not be in the lineup.

As for Rich Hill, he is making his debut for the Dodgers. He’s been out since July with a blister on his finger and he also had been dealing with a sore groin when he was with the A’s. I wonder how big this blister was because his start kept getting pushed back over and over. Hill was 9-3 with a 2.25 ERA in 14 starts for Oakland before being dealt to the Dodgers. Hill is 2-1 with a 3.18 ERA in 5 career starts against the Giants.

I can’t keep up with all of the injuries, but I am sure you have heard the news by now. Brett Anderson and Scott Kazmir were placed on the DL and the Dodgers called up Charlie Culberson, Ross Stripling, and Luis Avilan. Anderson has blisters, and Kazmir is having a problem with his neck. I’m just stoked that Anderson won’t be facing the Giants on Thursday night. I don’t want anyone to get hurt of course, but that would have been a for sure loss. Ross Stripling will be making the start on Thursday night and that gives the Dodgers a real chance of winning.

Oh and Clayton Kershaw is feeling a lot better. He could be back sooner than you think.

Go Blue!

  1. We finally may get to see DeLeon this weekend against Cubs:

Dodgers’ Jose De Leon: Candidate to start Saturday
    by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
De Leon seems like a top candidate to start Saturday against the Cubs in place of Scott Kazmir (neck).

The stars seem aligned for De Leon’s long-awaited major league debut, as Kazmir is on the DL and De Leon is coming off his most dominant performance yet with Triple-A Oklahoma City. De Leon took a no-hitter into the seventh inning Monday and finished with 10 strikeouts over seven scoreless innings, his second straight start with double-digit strikeouts and zero walks. He has posted a 2.86 ERA, .199 BAA and 98:20 K:BB in 78.2 innings with Oklahoma City this season. An official announcement regarding Saturday’s starter may not come until later in the week.

  2. The Dodgers need Rob more than Robin needs Rob right now. Sad but true.

It wouldn’t hurt my feelings to see Segedin penciled into the lineup every night in RF.

BTW, I watched last night and couldn’t help but think that Grandal must be one of the worst backstops in the MLB. Yes he got crossed up a few times, but damn he is absolutely awful blocking balls in the dirt, he has some how find a way to make the ball accelerate once he has the ball ricochet off his glove, mask, shin guard or anything else attached to his body. A guy batting .230 has to contribute with some form of defense. He is awful!

    1. Been saying that a long time. By the way, the Dodgers might need him, but family is way more important than the game…sorry

        1. I was in the Army. Was in Germany when my first daughter was born in Santa Barbara. My second daughter was born in Germany so I was there for that. My son was born in Long Beach, but me and his mom were not on good terms then. I did see him when he was 3 days old….

    1. Well, he has been a 4 WAR player 3 straight years and the comparisons made are valid. Does FAZ do that? It might depend on how he, and the Dodgers, finish. If I had to venture a guess? I doubt it.

  3. Misc.

    1. I do expect Walker Buehler to be in the Dodger’s rotation next year… if he is healthy. He was ready two years ago.

    2. I find it astonishing fans still want Matt Kemp. WHAAAAAATTTTT? Clubhouse cancer, outta’shape, arthritic, can’t field, prima donna, waste of a roster slot player? Please!

    3. Rich Hill has a lot of pressure on him tonight. He has to pitch well – he is the Dodgers next last hope.

    4. Johnny Cueto has a 4.25 ERA since the All-Star Game: 42 IP – 49 H – 1.37 WHIP – compare that to 2.47 ERA and 1.00 WHIP Pre-All Star Game. I’m just sayin’

    5. Way to beat Cueto: He likes to quick pitch and vary his delivery, so just step out and ask for time a lot!

    6. Puig has played his last game as a Dodger.

    7. Reddick should be sitting… unless he owns Cueto or something.

    8. I find it amazing that many baseball sites rate Grandal #4, #5 or #6 Best Catcher in Baseball and people still trash him. There is none so blind as those who will not see!

    9. Justin Turner will likely get 4 years/$60 million. I would not pay that, but someone will.

    10. Kenley Jansen will be the closer for the Red Sox next year!

    1. I totally agree on #2
      Hope so on #6
      Agree on #8
      Slightly disagree on #9
Not sure about #10- depends on what the top offer is in years and $$$

    2. Who are the blind? The baseball sites?

Rick Monday was critical of his inability to shift his body on a ball low and away. He tried to back hand it, missed it of course, and allowed the runner to move up a base.

At this point there is less room for error. By that I mean less games to make up mistakes. And it’s less in Sep. Bad defense at catcher in a close game with a few weeks remaining is asking for lots of trouble.

    3. 1. I like your optimism, but right now there are too many arms in front of him and they will baby him next year. We may get a glimpse in Septmeber 2017, but 2018 is more realistic.
      2. I’m with you on Kemp. Maybe getting dealt to Atlanta will humble him. Greinke supposedly was much happier with the clubhouse when Kemp, Hanley, and Beckett were gone.
      6. If Puig is left in OKC in September, you’re correct. I would prefer to see him and Toles in RF.
      7. Reddick should sit. I’m not a hater, but play the hot hand and it isn’t Reddick.
      8. Grandal has issues blocking balls, throws okay, but is absolutely an offensive weapon when healthy. Framing is night and day compared to AJ and has become a good game caller. I’m a fan.
      9. Pay the man! He’s a team leader. He’s a gamer and with such little RH power out there, he a must re-sign. I absolutely give him 4/$60 if that’s what it takes. They’ve gotten him on the cheap while they have other bloated contracts. Reward him for his work.
      10. Montas is gone, Baez isn’t an option. If not Kenley then who? I think he’s walking but if so they better get Chapman, Melancon or someone of their ilk.

  4. Whether you like Puig or not( I don’t), I was wondering how we have faired without him. I’m not sure when he officially went to OKC but the last game he played with the big guys was 7/31.
In August we have scored 112 runs in the 20 games we’ve played. That’s 5.6 runs per game. Offensively we seem to be better without him. Not sure what we were with him. Defensively, sure he’s better than Reddick and Toles but overall I think we’re better without him.
I could be wrong but I doubt it.

      1. Yeah, Agone has really gotten hot, and Franchise , Grandal, and JT have continued playing great

        It’s become a deep lineup

  5. I think JT is def worth a 4/55 deal. Even if he regresses a bit during the last 2 years , he’ll be a great platoon player for our next 3b, whether that’s Edwin Rios or someone else. Right now he’s our #3 hitter, and you don’t just let those walk away for nothing. He was a late bloomer. He had surgery to repair his knee earlier this year and is better than ever. There’s no reason to think that he’ll suddenly regress.

It’s no coincidence that we started to wake up when he started to get hot. He and Seager are our MVP’s (along with the bullpen)

    1. Bobby
I agree with what you said about Turner.

He is one of our big guys, that grinds out good at bats, and and he is somewhat a leader for this team.
Turner is way to clutch to let go, and he would take a little less, to stay with the Dodgers.

And Turner plays a good third base, so a is a two way player.

      1. I don’t see FAZ offering a 4 year deal to Turner, especially if its in the 50-60M range. I think he and Jansen are both gone after this year.

    2. He’s right; someone will pay Turner and Jansen…probably a team from Northern California that wears Halloween colors.

  6. Interesting. There is a lot to talk about there. I’ll wait for others to comment.

Just a note – 2 years ago, 2014, Buehler was 19 and pitched 102 innings. He’s pitched 90 since then. I wouldn’t expect him in the rotation next year.

    Puig is done in Oklahoma?

    1. Fansided said this about Walker:

I think one of the top arms in the minors that is yet to receive much hype is RHP Walker Buehler. The latest top pitching prospect to come out of the factory that is Vanderbilt, the Dodgers were ecstatic when he fell to them at pick 24. Tommy John surgery has slowed his path to the big leagues but he is expected to resume pitching in the instructional league later in the year. Buehler is credited with 4 above average pitches, emphasized by a fastball that consistently reaches 96. His pitchability earned him some comparisons to former Dodger, Zack Greinke, and it is believed Greinke even gave the Dodgers his tick of approval in the War Room last June. Once Buehler returns to health he should be on the fast track to the big leagues.

I have seen him and I am convinced he will be a starter in 2017. I think at least 7 rookies will make an impact next year:

      1. Barnes
      2. Buehler
      3. Calhoun
      4. De Leon
      5. Toles
      6. Segedin
      7. Stewart

      History will tell.

      1. And 5 the year after that. And 5 more the year after that. And 5 more the year after that…..remember what I said, ‘don’t invest in anyone’s jersey.’ Here today, gone tomorrow….thats the world of FAZ.

With the exception of Longoria, I mean Seager.

  7. It was Mattingly who couldn’t deal with the distractions. And our bullpen implosions doesn’t seem be Honeycutt’s fault now, simply curious.

On Puig, I think we need plus speed and durable hamstrings way more than his defense at this point, righty power be damned. And I surmise that it’s the hamstring thing that got him sent down. Remember how Mattingly dealt with that last year, by making snarky comments. Well Roberts didn’t make any comment on it this year and simply sent him down.

    1. Just to clarify – I found it curious Honeycutt was retained, and I had my doubts about him.

But given how we’re hitting now, and how we’re piecing pitching together, I’d say Mattingly and McGwire have a lot do to with how things were done (or not done). They had much much better teams than Roberts and Ward. This year’s a big vindication for Honeycutt.

      1. YF

Mattingly’s team has one of the best batting averages in baseball, but they have trouble scoring runs.

        Doesn’t that sound familar?

  8. I hope we resign Turner. I do think Jansen will sign with another team. McCarthy, if he gets his act together, could be a very good relief pitcher. He has electric stuff. I could see him as a closer.

    1. I agree. He’s a late bloomer. 4 years at 50-60 million is not deadweight.

My worry on Jansen being gone is not him being gone, but how we go about replacing him. Our short term internal options have been traded away. Heaven help us if we decide to sign another veteran closer for 3 years ….

      1. Supposedly we have amid in the minors who can throw 97 mph. If he is ready to start an MLB game, as some here are proclaiming, then he can definitely pitch one inning.

I hope we drop the closer mentality.

  9. I love beating the giants. giants fans are sour today. What a beautiful sound. Like Spring, with birds in the air, the sun shining, and looking forward to the summer. Back to reality: now that we can score runs, let’s put these bastards out of the playoffs all together. No wild card. I want the Cardinals and Marlins. Maybe Pirates. Last year Vin made the comment that the team could not beat playoff teams during the season, so it was not surprising that it was unsuccessful during the playoffs. I think we have done well against playoff potential teams this year. Maybe someone can look that up. I can’t give enough credit to Manager Roberts. What a smart guy. Watching his interviews, he seems to be able to digest data from different sources, add to it the human element of being baseball player, and stay the course. I bet the players love the guy. Puig is the cog in the wheel. It would be a horrible move to bring him up and upset the vibe that currently exists. Maybe Roberts can make that work. If he can, he is Manager of the Year. To hell with Joe Maddon.

  10. I have been waiting for our team, to get another chance against Cueto.

I hope they can hit him hard, but mostly, I hope we win this game.

Giant fans, have just become so arrogant, after the Giants three World Series wins.

They need to be put in there place.

  11. I get that Buehler could be a special talent. And he had his TJ early so he has a shot at rebounding. But you’re talking about him being in a Major League rotation in 7 months. That’s nuts. He will be most fortunate to be in a position for a September call up in a year.

I would like to see Turner back, but I think it needs to be said that we may be seeing the best Justin Turner year right now. He’s about to turn 32 and it’s a contract year.

Grandal’s reputation as a good “catcher” is likely based on the value given framing. I think that’s overrated. My eyeballs tell me he is lazy behind the plate on pitches in the dirt or he just can’t react quick enough to get in front of them. Either way a lot gets by him. And his arm is unreliable. How many times have you seen him miss the target at second. His career CS% is below league average. We like him when he’s hitting, but that is streaky. As long as he hits I can put up with his defensive shortcomings.

AGon. Heart and soul of this team. What a great pickup for this franchise.

Blister Boy last hope? So if he fails are we throwing in the towel?

    1. On Grandal: watch and see where he falls after the season is over. Right now, among Catchers he is

      4th in RBI
      1st in HR
      4th in Slugging
      8th in OB%
      6th in Fielding %

      For your reading:

      http://www.latimes.com/sports/dodgers/la-sp-dodgers-grandal-20160506-story.html

Grandal is not perfect, but he is a TOP 10 catcher… maybe TOP 5 and I’m OK with that because he will get better.

AGon. Heart and soul of this team. What a great pickup for this franchise.

A-Gon is a very nice player… when you don’t take into consideration that getting him costs the Dodgers $43 million a year. That is 3 or 4 times more than anyone pays for a 1B, but hey… it’s only money and the Dodgers are making money hand over fist! Well that’s dumb, but you believe it so… it must be true.

      Blister Boy?

I hereby christen you Blister Lips.

  12. I usually do not pay attention to anything that Steve Garvey says but he said one thing that I completely agreed with just last week. HRs get you into the playoffs but BARISP get you to the World Series Championship. Lets hope that the LAD can do both for 2 more months.

I have been for weeks, and still am convinced that Toles is better than Reddick. Please just play the best players and rest then 1-2 days a week,

it appears that the Moron still can’t refrain from trying to making up for his presumed Little Man.

Sophmoric comes from 2 Greek words. Wonder if the moron even knew that wihout somebody else telling him a few years ago. Those two words might be Mark Timmons but that can’t be true because Mark would mean “full of knowledge”, but at least Timmons would then mean “devoid of wisdom”, which those of use who refuse to exist in hia Nrcissist/Codependent Fool Relationship paradigm already understand.

If you do not understand this paradigm then I suggest that you research it on the internet and then you will understand what is happening i here. Scott appears to accepted the role of Codependent Fool by imposed by Mark and that is why the continues to allow the garbage to continue in here.

Here is hoping for another good game tonight!

    1. BOB
That last stat that you used, is said to be the reason that the Giants were so successful in the post season, as well as the Royals.

Toles is a good contact hitter, and has really good bat speed.

And like I have already said, he slows the game down.

    2. Bob, you are totally out of touch with reality.

I have already warned you, now you are insulting me? Consider this a second warning. Third strike and you’re out. First offense is a one week ban. DO NOT TEST ME

      1. So you threaten to ban BOB? He’s just telling the truth Scott. Mark insults all who disagree with him and you say nothing but you threaten someone that insults him? Have you ever considered he may be right?

You might want to consider taking your scolding directly to him. I don’t want to see it here.

        1. No, he’s not telling the truth. He’s unstable. He’s not right. He’s sick. And for you to essentially use and co-opt his instability as ammo in your perpetual ego driven dick swing with Mark that has been going on for over a decade I find really objectionable.

  13. In response to Mark’s 1st post:
1 – Buehler won’t be ready for the rotation next year
2 – Glad Kemp is gone. The Dodgers need a RH power hitter, but Kemp is damaged goods and not good in the clubhouse
3 – Hill is important – Kershaw is more important
4 – Cueto tends to fade in the 2nd half
6 – Puig is done in LA
8 – Grandal a top offensive catcher – not good at catching the ball or throwing the ball
9 – Turner will get 4/$60MM – if the Dodgers don’t resign him, who plays 3B? Who replaces his production?
10 – Same question with Jansen?

As to Mark’s 2nd post, Barnes looks like a AAAA player to me. Calhoun not a good 2B. Toles and Segedin have earned another look – I suspect Van Slyke is gone next year. Not enough of Stewart to know if he is major league ready – so far he hasn’t pitched well. I think that Stripling has earned another look. Urias should start the season in the rotation.

  14. Hill not as sharp as he will be but looks better than the flotsam and jetsam that has been posing as the Dodgers’ rotation.

He will have control issues – not a good follow through – he doesn’t land properly on his front foot – too many arms and legs and he doesn’t finish his pitches.

IN short – he will be a plus if he can stay healthy (a big if).

  15. I don’t know why Buehler can’t be in the rotation next year… at least by May. In June he will be 20 months removed from his TJ. He has very good 4 pitches, with a quick delivery and is very athletic with a repeatable delivery, and throws 96+ MPH with excellent control. When he was drafted, most publications thought he was MLB ready. His TJ derailed that. I am willing to bet he will be in the rotation next year at some point. If the Dodgers have 5 better starters than Buehler, then I will be ecstatic!

  16. It just occurred to me why Badger is ragging onYasmani. He’s trying to obfuscate the fact that I have always said Grandal was a 25+ HR guy and he disagreed.

    I get it now…

    Crow!

    1. All I said was I didn’t think he was all that defensively. He’s 18th in rGFP. Didn’t want to mention that did you. As soon as framing is devalued his 9th ranking will fall. You also said he would hit .275, so take your crow and shove it.

    1. Don’t ban him. He’s a sick man! Let him go…. He’s not hurting anyone.

BTW, Zach Lee is 0-6 with a six-something ERA after the trade for Taylor!

        1. He has been really profane and obnoxious. I usually err on the side of letting everyone have his or her say, but he has been beyond the pale as far as I am concerned.

    2. No. Free speech. He doesn’t like Mark. He’s not alone there. He doesn’t like the fact you do nothing about Mark’s continued boorish behavior and he’s not alone there either.

      1. That’s funny. Before he became mentally ill – he hated you!

That says a lot, I think! You do appeal to some people.

I can show you the emails. Ken. MBAJDCPA ring a bell?

  17. Hill has been out 6 weeks but is nails and has not walked anyone. This is why FAZ got him. He might give us 7!

If Clayton comes back, everything will change.

  18. Scott,

Don’t let me tell you what to do or Bob will accuse me of controlling you. 😉

All I am saying is he doesn’t bother me. I know Bob (Ken) and he really is sick (and I mean that). He didn’t used to be like this. I hate to see a guy banned who may not be with us for long. Humor him.

While I am at it, Roger Dodger, BOB, Dino Chavez and Quas all need our prayers and support as they are all fighting health issues.

    Godspeed!

      1. Scott, if it isn’t too much trouble, why not just moderate Bob?

These rules courtesy of Jon Weisman’s original list at Dodger Thoughts
        Thank You For Not …

        1. using profanity or any euphemisms for profanity

        12. claiming your opinion isn’t allowed when it’s just being disagreed with

        1. Some of those sound silly silly (oops, did it again)

Using sarcasm in a way that can be misinterpreted? Really? Some of the world’s most interesting writers use sarcasm. We can’t control how someone interprets.

          #6. not going to happen

Most of those I can live with. The big one for me is to respect others opinions and don’t resort to name calling. This should be fun. All rules can be covered under one word – civility. Show respect and we won’t need code of conduct rules.

    1. NO rehab assignment – 1st game with more than 5 pitches since 7/7. He was on a short leash. he will throw more pitches next game

      1. I think he did great. I’m impressed so far. Do it a few more times and maybe the trade won’t look so terrible.

  19. I say don’t ban him. We all like you , Scott, and most of us could give a crap if he pms on you. Ignore him. You have too many good posters on this board to let 1 get to you

Great 6 by Hill. Now let’s pray Baez doesn’t give up one of his infamous hr

  20. Roberts did the right thing. Hill hasn’t pitched in 6 weeks. Let him pitch 7 the next game. Win the war, not the battle.

  21. OK so I have to insult you Scott. “Your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries”.
Let’s see if any of our witty posters can identify that.

    1. “Hamsters are prolific breeders in the wild and elderberries were made into wine, thus mom was a slut and dad was a drunk.”

    2. You have been watching too much Monty Python and if you think it makes sense, you are OOT (out of touch).

      😉

      Did I pass?

  22. Hill was looking very good with his variety of curve balls and different angles. Lots of weakly hit balls. Dodgers Stadium is a good place for him, especially if he gets a late afternoon game with the shadows. Looking forward to his next start.

  23. It was great to see a pitcher, pitch with great confidence, like Hill did tonight.

I don’t want to elaborate anymore, because I want to wait until Hill has thrown a few more games.

Because McCarthy was pretty good in his first few games, then everything went south.

But Hill pitched a very good game, and he never once, showed that he was under so much pressure, and we know he was.

I just wish our guys could figure out Cueto.

  24. Nice outing by Hill. Rather amazing considering how long he was out. Loved the side-arm curve to Crawford. Reddick isn’t as bad as he’s played, but it is going to be up to Hill to convince me that was a good trade with Oakland.

  25. From being at the game today, I could really see the movement on Hill’s pitches. I”m assuming he must’ve looked great on tv.

As I said above, earlier, before the game, this start by Hill was actually more important than the win itself. If he’s back, and if his blister issues are done with, then we actually have a legit front line starter until Kersh comes back and makes it 2.

As far as Walker Buehler is concerned, I do remember reading last year that he was one of the most advanced pitchers coming out who could be on a fast track to the bigs. His stuff is like Zack Greinke, with a few more mph on that fastball. I’m still amazed he threw 97 in his first start. He will be one to watch for the rest of the year and then next year

  26. Said the other day Hill and Reddick would have to be BIG contributors
in the last five weeks to make up for the hurt they’ve been so far.

Great start on that by Hill tonight, especially considering no publicized
    rehab starts. Impressive.

Nice work by Manager Dave sitting with his arm around Reddick.
It’s what the kid needs – he always plays well WHEN COMFORTABLE….
hope he gets into that zone soon.
