Tired Dodgers Need Scott Kazmir To Give Them Innings

Scott Kazmir

The Dodgers (48-40) rolled over and played dead on Thursday evening in the opening game of their four game series against San Diego. Hyun-jin Ryu’s return was unsurprisingly unsuccessful as the left hander allowed six earned runs in five innings to the lowly Padres. Sadly most shoulder injuries like the one he had are often career enders. The Dodger bullpen is completely taxed because of the rotation’s inability to pitch past the fifth inning and that 14-inning marathon loss to the Orioles on Wednesday. The offense gave up as well. The hitters folded up like a tin can collecting only two hits against opposing starter Drew Pomeranz. Oh and Corey Seager’s hitting streak ended at 19.

Hyun-jin Ryu made 89 pitches, but the Dodgers were forced to call up right hander Carlos Frias to give them some innings. Here’s a noteworthy stat: Since May 14 the Dodgers have had a starting pitcher not named Clayton Kershaw pitch into the eighth inning only once. That is why the Dodgers have problems. The rotation is simply just not giving them enough innings. They’re not going deep into games and it’s taking a toll on the bullpen. The guys have pitched well, but the Dodgers need innings. The pathetic loss to the Padres gives them three consecutive losses and is not putting them in danger of even falling out of the wild card race. The Dodgers are also now 6.5 games behind the Giants in the NL West race. The Dodgers are tired and they need the all-star break badly.

Dodgers Lineup vs. San Diego

Andrew Cashner-3-6 vs. Scott Kazmir-7-3

Game Time – 7:10 PM – TV-SNLA

In the second game of the series with the Padres, the Dodgers will give the ball to Scott Kazmir. Meanwhile the Padres will counter with big flame throwing Andrew Cashner.

The 29-year old Cashner (3-6 4.42) has seen his strikeout rate decrease significantly. In 2015 his strikeout per nine rate was a hearty 8.0. He whiffed 165 last season, but this season that total has dropped to just 6.5 per nine. Cashner has whiffed just 42 in 59 frames this season. He still throws pretty hard so I am not sure what the problem is.

Cashner has faced the Dodgers just once this year back on April 6 in San Diego. The Dodgers defeated him as he allowed five earned runs on six hits over 4 innings. Cashner has made 11 career starts against the Dodgers and is 1-6 with a 2.56 ERA. He is 1-2 with a 3.03 ERA at Dodger Stadium. Take a look at the Dodger’s numbers against Cashner. Adrian Gonzalez has destroyed him. He’s hitting .344 (11 for 32) with 4 home runs off of Cashner.

The Dodgers will be counting on Scott Kazmir (7-3 4.37) to give them some innings. Unfortunately he hasn’t done that much this year. Kazmir has pitched into the seventh inning just twice all year. He averages just less than 6 innings per start. Somehow the Dodgers are going to need to squeeze some innings out of him. The veteran has made two starts against the Padres this year and is 1-0 with a no-decision. Overall he is 1-0 with a 4.37 ERA in 4 career starts versus San Diego.

In other news, Corey Seager has announced that he will participate in the 2016 home run derby. That’s pretty cool but I hope that it doesn’t screw with his swing like many thought it did with Joc Pederson’s last season.

The Dodgers sure could use a day off. I know I could too. After tonight only two games remain until the all-star break. Time is flying by.

Go Blue!

  1. “Yes, my velocity went down in the fifth inning compared to the first few innings, but we’ll just have to adjust as I go a little more, play more games,” Ryu said through an interpreter. “Hopefully I will feel better.”

Yeah, hopefully. And hopefully McCarthy can go 7 each time out until November. And hopefully Kershaw comes back 100%. And hopefully Wood. And Anderson. And maybe even De Leon.

Just hoping. And thinking. And prayin. Plannin and dreamin…..

I don’t think a move for a pitcher will do any good unless we start hitting as a team. This RISP issue must be fixed. How? The only way this team has a chance at playing .600 ball, which it’s going to take to make up 6.5 on the gnats in 74 games, we need to hit as a team. . The giants are good. They are on pace to win 100. They may not get that, but barring disaster they are gonna win 93. We need 45 out of 74 to match that. With our issues I don’t see that. I think we can play for the Wild Card and hope like hell we close with a flurry. It’s possible. Likely? Of course not. But as long as I’m here watching every game I want to see them play well.

Hitters gotta hit. Turner, Puig, Thompson, AGon, Grandal and Van Slyke, have got to turn it up. Utley has to keep it up, Seager? Hold on kid. It’s a long season.

So, all that said, don’t trade any real assets. You want to swap role players? Ok. If by the deadline we have not improved, SVS, and Grandal can go. I would be ok with Kendrick going, Hatcher, Hernandez could benefit from a change in scenery, some A ball players can go. But don’t trade any real prospect assets. Not for this year’s team.

  2. Totally agree, no need to go after pitching if you can’t get hits and runs. I’m getting older but I’m pretty damn sure if you don’t score (in any sport) you don’t win. At least that’s what I remember.

  3. Worst hitting OF in MLB. All 3 positions are 24th or worse (29th, 25th, and 24th). Trade for a real RH OF to play LF. LAD needs 1 RP and 3 Position players. RH LF, Post Mendoza C, and a Lead off .300 BA CF. That is all.

Happy to see 6 LAD prospects in the new top MLB 100 and 3 are actually position players!!!!!!!!!!!

Ryu performed worse than Stewart (And even Bolsinger, and Urias, and Stripling) . Send him back to the DL. Or maybe the gamblers just brought him back too soon, another bone head thing that they have done.

Fien 6 runs on 5 HRs. A very lucky guy. He will not last the season when he starts giving up hits and walks before the gopher balls.

    1. They are all with the Brewers Bob. except .300 leadoff hitter. In whiche case if we get the other three that you mentioned we won’t need the 4th player(.300 CF).

  4. Considering he hadn’t pitched since 2014 I don’t think Ryu was that awful. Bad throw by Seager and another misjudged line drive by Puig made it worse. Seems to me they could have given him another start or two in the minors to build up his strength and brought him back after the break but WTF.

From down here I can’t hear the phones ringing from other teams wanting to trade for some of our “depth”. We’ll have to wait and see, but I wouldn’t trade unless it was to unload some of the deadwood or add a player who would help the team next year. Lucroy, anyone?

    1. That outfielder that Mark talked about on one of the prior sites, is suppose to be coming up to the Dodgers today.

      Remember Mark mentioned Andrew Toles.

He is the one coming up to the big team.

He started at A level this year, just like Brock Steward.

He is a centerfielder, so he will be interesting to see.

He has speed to steal bases, and he hits for an average, and he also has gap power.

      1. Friedman signed him when he was at Tampa. Wow, he’s been at Double-A for a month and they’re bringing him up already? This is player development?
Good luck to the young man, but this smacks of desperation…like most of the moves in the past month.

      2. I with hold judgement until I see him in more than a handful of games, BUT Trayce Thompson had better be worried,,,,

        1. Michael
Both Joc and Trayce should be worried.

Joc has still not proved he can hit at the big league level yet.

    2. Most people won’t give quality for crap “depth”. That whole depth issue that was touted at the beginning of the season really was a stupid argument, many pointed that out and only a very few in hear tried to sell that hogwash to the rest of us. Hell, go to the city dump, there is plenty of depth to those piles of trash, however it ain’t worth a damn thing, it just takes up space and stinks (see me working it?) So should our depth or farm system be called “The Dump”?

      1. He has been around a few years, had some personal problems over in Tampa. Was a minor league free agent signing this winter……speed, good glove, stick is a question…

  5. I just noticed what is so terribly wrong with the LAD pitcher’s subconsciousness.

The SPs should always come before the RPs. But, if you go alphabetically down the LAD roster the first 8 of the 9 pitchers listed are RPs and the last 4 are SPs. This just can’t ever be right. Neddy Jr. needs to find some SPs whose names will appear at the beginning of the alphabet in order to put the positional Karma in the right order. They really need Anderson to be activated in order to bring some order back to this tradgedy 🙂

      1. Beachy on the 7 Day AAA DL for 3.5 months. Not even on the 40 man roster yet getting paid a nice $1.5 mil just to rehab. Maybe he will be part of the 2018 Plan!

  6. Anyone see the piece on ESPN.com about how many All-Stars were signed or drafted by Theo Epstein? Doesn’t seem fair.

  7. Cashner throwing BP, Kazmir not going to give the Dodgers the innings they need. I think I’ll just read about this one tomorrow.

  8. to bad corey is going to be in the home run derby ..the last three yrs ..each dodger that has been in there ..the second half sucked..hope he isnt the same.

  9. KazMire sucks again. Another bullpen game. Bring up a LR tomorrow and send Baez to AAA to learn another pitch over the break.

LAD finally have a C above the Mendoza line.

Seager needs a day off really bad.

Woody Wood Pecker seams to have had more players thrown out at Home this year than Al Bundy did all of last year.

  10. Well that was interesting. We beat up on a .437 club. Good for us. Well, actually one guy beat up on them. Kemp 0 for 5. I don’t want him anymore.

Didn’t Grandal have a couple hot streaks last year? Just checked – .375 in May, .340 in July. Hit .234 for the year. He could do that again I suppose.

Kazmir. Starting pitching. Coleman and Howel didn’t look good. The cracks are widening.

      1. Why did they give him 3 years, I can’t believe they were standing in line to sign him. By that time, all the better pitchers were gone; Why not offer him $15MM with performance bonuses AND a vesting option (Like if he pitched 180 innings or whatever) for the next season at a small raise, and the same thing for a third season. The vesting option would have protected both him and us and allowed him to make more money than his present contract.

        1. They did a similar thing with McCarthy. Neither deal makes a lot of sense, but, that’s Friedman.

I’m ready to see what De Leon can do. Last two outings, 5 and 6.1 IP. If he could match that at the big league level, why not him? He’s a Top 20 MLB prospect, he’s 24 in a few weeks, put him in there.

        2. Wondering

You just don’t give a pitcher, a multi year contract, that had to be released by the Angels, in 2011, because he was not effective.

These deals look good in Oakland, and Tampa Bay, and that is only because they don’t have the money a big market team has, to sign reliable pitchers, that you have to pay more money for.

They talked about his opt out being a smart deal.

How can anyone that knows enough about baseball, think this guy would have teams lining up, to sign him to another multi year contract.

Deals like these, and for pitchers, that have long injury histories, don’t let you keep your prospects.

Because when they can’t make there starts, or can’t pitch effectly, you have to get replace ments, but at the market price, or for even more value, because teams know your desperate to replace these pitchers.

This will cost you more money, and more valuble prospects.

        3. You answered your own question, W: By that time the better pitchers were gone. Just like by the time they got around to hiring a manager and coaching staff…
