Urias Gets Another Chance To Earn First MLB Win

The Dodgers staved off embarrassment and a sweep at the hands of the Pirates with a come from behind 5-4 win. Scott Kazmir turned in another poor performance, by allowing four earned runs in the top of the first inning, but didn’t allow anything the rest of the way. His outings are really becoming a detriment to the team. It’s extremely difficult to muster up the energy to win a ball game when you’re constantly losing before the chairs are warm.

The offense came through this time despite Dave Roberts fielding another all righty loser lineup with a below Mendoza line (Kike Hernandez batting .189) hitter batting lead-off. Their lineups are so stupid, but thankfully the Dodgers got a couple of big hits from Yasiel Puig, A.J. Ellis, and Howie Kendrick. Newly acquired Chris Taylor tripled in his first game which means he’s already outhit Kike Hernandez for the entire season. Honestly though, the Dodgers need to dump him. Do they really need Kike if Taylor can back up at shortstop?

All of this was tempered with the news of Clayton Kershaw’s sore back and Justin Turner’s leg cramping. Even when we do get a good win under our belts you can bet dollars to donuts that somebody will get hurt. Don’t worry though, both injuries are considered minor and Kershaw is not expected to miss his next start. Thank god.

So the Dodgers will now fly to Milwaukee to close out the road trip with a three game set at Miller Park. The Dodgers defeated the Brewers three out of four last week at Dodger Stadium. The good news is that the Dodgers will lead-off the series with super prospect Julio Urias. The Brewers will tab Chase Anderson again.

Urias faced the Brewers last week and tossed five shutout frames against them. He allowed just one hit and struck out eight but was not involved in the decision. Overall he is 0-2 with a 4.33 ERA in 9 starts. Over 27 frames he’s whiffed 35 and walked just 9. He has posted an 11.7 strikeout per nine rate. He’s actually pitched very well, in limited innings. The Dodgers are sure to have him on another 90-95 pitch count limit. Perhaps this will be the day he picks up his first MLB win? Will this be his final start of the season?

Right hander Chase Anderson (4-7 5.13) faced the Dodgers on June 18 at Dodger Stadium and was hammered. The boys in blue rocked him for seven earned runs on six hits over 2.1 innings of work. He hasn’t started since then. He’s 1-2 with a 5.07 ERA in 7 career starts against the Dodgers. Anderson is 3-2 with a 4.66 career ERA at Miller Park. If Adrian Gonzalez could get his back and mind healthy that would be just super perfect because he’s hitting .462 (.6 fir 13) with a home run against Anderson.

In case you haven’t heard, minor leaguer Brock Stewart will start on Wednesday against the Brewers. Of course a roster spot will need to be cleared so somebody is going to get cut. I’m crossing my fingers that the Dodgers will finally cut bait with Kike Hernandez. Crossing arms, feet, legs, and eyes. Needless to say Stewart was pretty stoked.

The Dodgers are kind of stupid because they could have had Carlos Frias start, but they already had optioned him, so they have to wait the full ten days before recalling him. The only other way to get him back up sooner is to replace an injured pitcher. The 24-year old right hander has split time this season between Tulsa and Oklahoma City. It looks like the bum merry-go round of the back end of the rotation continues. I guess you could say that the “depth” that all the Friedman butt kissers raved about has produced Brock Stewart. The truth is the front office has absolutely no plan. They’re just going to week to week. To nobody’s surprise Brandon McCarthy, Hyun-jin Ryu, Brett Anderson and the rest of the walking wounded have yet to pitch in the majors this year.

In other news Nick Tepesch was claimed off of waivers by the A’s. Makes you wonder why the Dodgers punted that game away. Couldn’t they have just used Frias? The front office defies common sense. The Giants finally lost a game, so the Dodgers (42-36) are now 7 games back in the NL West standings.

  1. I take exception to your statement that I am a butt kisser. I will think for myself. All you do is bitch about every player. You cannot say anything good even if it bit you in the ass. They are not in first place, but they are ahead in the wild card. I guess that means nothing to you. I support the Dodgers. I am not going to be a negative like you. You have chased many good people off. The only people left are the negatives.

      Scott I still say that to be disappointed you have to have bought into the “this year” grandiloquence. I didn’t, and being in the Wild Card conversation is a big deal for me.

      1. Well I think that talk about the WC before the all star break is truly sad given the best pitcher in the game, Jansen in the pen, Agon’s bat, Puig’s bat/speed/arm , Seager’s offensive punch, and Grandal’s pitch framing bs. And here we are talking about the WC before the AS break 🙁

        It is what it is! And what it is depends on what adj you prefer. I’ll take mediocre. Hopefully that word doesn’t upset anyone.

  2. I am a fan. As is Scott and he has every right to demonstrate his passion as he so chooses. Frankly to talk pretty and lovely about this team 24/7 distorts the reality.

    Scott’s ire toward our team is welcome change over the ass kissers on other blogs. Plus I enjoy Scott’s writing. So from my view keep up the good work Scott! And if the dodgers were to send Kike packing that would be hilarious after all the BS about how he is the ultimate utility player.

  3. They have to clear a roster spot because they just claimed another utility player off waivers. Similar to bringing Frias up for one game and then sending him back down, or getting Venable for a week. If managing a roster is that so challenging it takes 5 GMs to do it, no wonder they’re in trouble.

    It’s a great opportunity for Stewart, but it points out how desperate the pitching situation has become for the team. McCarthy is coming, ready or not. I realize that in rehab games how a player feels is more important than how he pitches, but when
    he gets to the bigs it will be a different story. He hasn’t looked good against SingleA hitters so far.

    1. Our utility guy is playing 3B? Hopefully nothing serious with Turner, just the dreaded “day to day”.

    I’m going on record – somebody will make the move to a 6 man rotation soon, and others will follow. We are one surgery away from this becoming a reality.

  6. I am sure the butt kickers will agree with the head butt kicker. I do not mind some negative comments but when the head writer is negative all the time, then I have a problem.

    Frias had his chance to be a starter. He blew it. He is not the answer to our problems. The writer uses Frias as an excuse to blast the front office. I would much rather have Stewart who I know very little about than Frias who I know is no good.

  8. Bolsinger, Frias, and Lee are not the answer. Lee is now gone. Bolsinger needs to be traded. Until Frias can command his pitches, he needs to stay at AAA.

    Yes, I am mad about a few things FAZ has done. Signing Kendrick after signing Utley was a dumb move. I hate the line ups. Go with your 8 best players. I do not like Sabermetrics or whatever you call it. However, I am not going to bitch every day. Baseball is a tough game. Batting 333 is very good. That means you fail 2 out of 3 times. You would not succeed in any business with that average.

  9. Frias was basically another 5 inning guy. Third time through the lineup and he gets lit up….short reliever? Maybe, but not as a starter….he is way behind guys like Holmes, and Montas, Cotton and Deleon…..even Stewart is rated higher than he is…..

Wow – the tone of this blog has suddenly gotten hostile – interestingly, it happened shortly after Mark accused Chili of lying in the last thread (saying someone is disingenuous is another way of calling someone a liar). Now, posters are accusing each other of being a** kissers or of being negative all of the time.

    Tone, people, tone. Act like grown ups.

    I am always in favor of seeing whether one of the products of our vaunted farm system is major league ready. It is way better than having some washed up hack make a start. I would much rather see Urias or Stripling pitch then someone like Kevin Correia (remember him?) did a few years back. Maybe Urias can get a win; maybe Stewart will be good. It’s worth a shot.

    I don’t think that we need yet another minor league infielder/AAAA level player/waiver pick up. The roster churn drives me crazy. I would rather see the Dodgers pick up a player that they actually need.

    I still think that this team is not prioritizing a win in 2016. I still think that they are rebuilding and trying to stay competitive simultaneously. It really isn’t working. The guys on the roster now mostly won’t be here in 2018 and almost none will be here in 2019. The Braintrust isn’t going to do anything that will jeopardize the rebuild that is currently happening. The team will continue to be mediocre for the remainder of the season.

    The Dodgers that we saw right after Guggenheim et al bought the team in 2012 were trying to accumulate major league talent ASAP to rebuild on the fly and be competitive right away. That was expensive and while the Dodgers improved right away, they didn’t get to the Series. The Braintrust wants its own players, managers and coaches to try to do it its own way – the SABER way. They are jettisoning all of the players and coaches and even many of the prospects obtained by the prior management, including player evaluation and development people and scouts.

    The Braintrust may sign or trade for another crummy or marginal pitcher or two and even a bat or two, but it will all be cheap and short term. As Badger has said for months, the Dodgers are playing for the future and not for 2016.

This is about the time where frustration over the team’s relative lack of success (and I say relative because they still have a winning record and are in the wildcard spot) is creating a tone that is boiling over with hostility and negativity.

        I started reading this blog when it was Mark’s. I don’t think he’s a FAZ ass kisser. Some of the proposals he makes are …off the wall. He stirs shit up, which I like amid this echo chamber of whining conformity, and I think he has really good insights often enough and is not afraid to criticize where it’s due.

        Yes, I’m disappointed in the team’s performance so far. Why compound that by having to sift through this shit?

      As for being negative, I have actually been pretty even keel this year. I said in spring training and you can go back through my articles for proof that I thought the Dodgers would win 90 games. I still think they’ll probably be around that neighborhood as long as they don’t lose Kershaw for any extended amount of time. The fact remains though that most of the front office’s moves have not worked out and been lackluster. The Giants have smoked the Dodgers this year. Second place is not good enough for me. If mediocrity or second place is good enough for you, then please enjoy by all means. Don’t let my words stop you from enjoying second place in the standings.

      This remains my blog (Oscar’s too) and I will run it how I see fit, but the name calling and accusations will stop now.

  13. Most of us, we who post here, are life-long, or at least long time Dodger fans.

    There are many Dodger blogs or sites for fans to read and post thoughts and ideas. Some of them can be cheerleader types. I believe this one is bases presently in reality of what is happening down on the field of play.

    The owner of this site, Scott, is being realistic most of the time and criticizes 1) the playing by the Dodgers players 2) the roster moves by the G.M. 3) the long-range plan of the braintrusts. Finally, 4) some of the line-ups used by the manager; which are about the same as the last manager.

    1) most of the players on the roster are not having very good seasons. Most. Some are actually terrible. 4 players have spent much of the season below .200 and starting a number of games, not just pinch-hitting. 5 or 6 players are around .250 when they should be higher. AGon has not been the player of old.

    2) Roster moves seem to happen daily with his GM. Some from injuries, others to fill in a roll. And some to try out other players that MIGHT be better than what is here.

    3) And the long-range program plan — seems to be, hold any bright young prospects and do not trade them. Go to Dollar General every week to see what cast-off is on the shelf and give them some money and bring them in. And then sit back and wait for the young superstars to be — become real major league producing players. BUT THIS IS LOS ANGELES and fans expect more than a .500 club.

    4) and these left / right line-ups that still keep the team around .500.

    Scott I am with you — tell it like it is, not sugar-coat it. (Harrison Ford in 6 Days & 7 Nights).

Actually, using “liar” as a way to define the meaning of “disingenuous” is “deliberately disingenuous” which could rise to the definition he dealt!         That’s really wrong! Seager, Urias, Pederson, Turner, Gonzo, De Leon, Cotton, and a bunch more are a big part of the Dodgers. They got rid of the guys who couldn’t play – Lee, Crawfish, Guerrero, et al. In the front office, Vance Lovelace, Alex Tamin, Gerry Hunsicker, Pat Corrales, Aaron Sele, Jose Vizcaino, Ralph Avila, Scott Akasaki, et al are all part of the prior regime.         Maybe, maybe not! It depends upon what the deal is and who is available for what… I really can’t answer that question. I’m sure they value some prospects more than others now.

  19. You know, for years I wasn’t sure if I was a breast man or an ass man. My friends helped me figure it out, they kept saying – “hey, you’re a real ass man”.

    We are allowing ourselves to be divided by opposing opinions. Until recently there was only one guy that resorted to name calling. Now others have stooped to his level. It’s your board, you can do with it what you want. We still have some freedom of choice. I don’t like most of FAZs moves, but I choose to believe they aren’t trying that hard. No GM team is this bad with moves unless they are doing it on purpose.

    Now, doesnt that help you feel better.

      1. I think Trayce is a much better OF than Kike who is a natural infielder. He does not have a great arm, and limited range……he also needs to be in AAA working on his hitting. He is hurting the team more than helping at this point

          Kike is a natural infielder, but he doesn’t mis judge to many fly balls, like Trayce has, especially in center.

          I do like Trayce a lot, but I think he handles the corner outfield positions better.

          That could change in time.

          I think Kike should go down, but if Joc was out, I might think different, but Trayce could change my mind in center, in time.

    You see, just because I say it doesn’t make it true. It’s only been 10 or 12. But many know your brag flag has been flying high for about 2 decades now.

      That was a great catch!

      Joc is more use to Dodger stadium which has padding on there walls, unlike Miller Park.

      They said that Joc’s scans were negative, but I still wondering about his soft tissue in his AC joint.

      But it sounded from Roberts that it was only bruised.

      Joc said that it knocked the wind out of him, so that is partly why he stayed down so long.

  23. I do agree that Baez and Hatcher have to go. Howell is not very good either. He is not used much. Right now Liberatore, Blanton, Coleman, and Jansen are the work horses. I still have hope for Fien.

  24. Ah, boys being boys and showing their bad sides. One thing we can all agree on is that we all have different opinions of how the FO is doing and what should be done about it. Are there some on here who irritate? Probably, but since this is the internet, basically none of us really has ever met the other. Some people are more irritating in person than online. I have had my fair share of confrontations online with some that I considered mental midgets, who lacked any common sense on any subject concerning the Dodgers. Some of the trades I have seen proposed boggle the mind. But since I reside in Colorado, my chances of meeting anyone on here are pretty slim. I did when I went home to California meet up with a poster I met on Dodgers nation. He is a pretty nice guy, and although we have different opinions on some of the moves this team makes, and differing views of some players ability’s we both agreed that what the FO’s plan is, no one knows. We are not privy to what they are thinking and sometimes what they are thinking is very frustrating to the fans who want that championship NOW!. Scott is not an umpire, and he cannot control what is said on here, but he like everyone here is entitled to his opinion. There should just be less name calling……..and a little more unity, since we all want the same thing…….Dodger wins……criticism of the FO though is always welcome!
