Urias Leaves Early, Offense Never Arrived, Dodgers Shutout 0-3

Yesterday the Dodgers kicked the Yankees around their own stadium. Today the Bronx Bombers took sweet revenge – one home run at a time. Julio Urias was sent packing in the fourth, and the Dodgers forgot to unpack their bats all night.

3rd inning
Urias found himself in a jam with Yanks on second and third, but there were two out. He got a strike out to end the threat.

4th inning
Urias got a double play, but with one on, he hit a batter with his 70th pitch. He then gave up a slowly hit single to load the bases.
Urias couldn’t close the inning, so he gave way to Luis Coleman. Grounder to Corey Seager, job done.

6th inning
Up to this point, Dodgers pitching held up its part of the bargain, but the offense was barely sparking.
There were only a few Dodger baserunners over the first five innings, and nobody advanced them.
That happened again in the 6th.

7th inning
Welp. It was coming sooner or later, I suppose. The Dodgers refused to score, so the Yankees went ahead and got it started. Two solo home runs off Stripling made it 0-2.

8th inning 0-2
New Dodgers pitcher (Jesse Chavez), same result. Another homer. 0-3

That was all she wrote, as the Dodgers flailed and floundered in the ninth.

Dodgers lose 0-3

Julio Urias didn’t give up any runs today, but he continued to suffer from the youth syndrome of using far too many pitches per batter.

His curve ball was effective, but he wasn’t able to consistently knock batters out once he got two strikes on them.
He tried too hard to aim pitches with two strikes, wasn’t very good at it, and bloated his pitch count.
In addition, he was bit by sneaky singles that put men on and increased the stress factor of every inning.
On the bright side, Urias continued to exhibit maturity and steadiness on the mound. He wasn’t visibly rattled by hit batters or walks, and ultimately, he didn’t surrender any runs. So there’s that.

Viva Urias: Julio now leads the NL with the most pick-offs (6).

The word Is out: The Dodgers continued to field an anemic lineup against left handed pitching that again resulted in anemic results. Everybody knows. Just announce your starting pitcher is a southpaw, and the Dodgers will go to the B-level hitters, in bizarre batting orders, and then you win. It’s a simple recipe we may see repeated until the Dodgers plunder away all of their lead in the NL West, and any playoffs mojo they’ve built up.

Julio Urias went 3 2/3 innings with 4 hits, 0 runs, 3 walks, 2 Ks.  ERA 3.50

Team with RISP: 0 for 5

  1. Only comment is that Sabathia pitched a great game. They still cannot hit lefty’s. And thank you Padres for beating the Gnats.

      1. Did not see the game, so anything I would say besides what I said would be making things up. Giants imploded?> Well good….I watched the Dodger game and went to bed….

        1. I thought the Giants won last night, but I guess that isn’t true, and that is great news right now, epecially after that terrible platoon team did nothing against Sabathia.

And no other team has had much trouble hitting Sabathia, so that tells you how bad this platoon team is.

Besides the fact that they are dead last in offense, in all of baseball!

  2. Oscar

I am just as frustrated with this platoon line up, as you and Scott are.

I just don’t see why they don’t try anything different, because it hasn’t worked all year.

And when they face a leftie, they need to have the best productive offense, a team can have.

Players need to find a way to get on base, and the next hitter, has to move the runner over.

And if the runners is on third, with less then two outs, Roberts needs to try to bunt the run in.

Maybe the regular line up, could be more productive on offense as a team, then the platoon line up, in scraping runs in.

Considering they are getting most of the consistent at bats, I would try them for a change.

And I would tell them they will need to work hard as a team on offense, to be productive, and get runners over, and get runners home.

  3. I think everyone agrees about this rightie lineup. We should be in playoff mode now. That means no starts for Segedin and them. I’d rather see Joc in there and prove to me that he is a worse choice than Kike and Segedin. Besides, baseball is is played on both sides of the field, and Joc is a better CF than Kike.

And yes, what great news to wake up to. Giants bullpen gave up 5 in the 9th, including the last 3 on a 3 run hr with 2 outs and a 1-2 count to some dude that none of us have ever heard of.

Magic number 15. Today we get Kersh. Let’s go win a road series vs a good team.

  4. We all have voiced our opinions on this team over the last few months. Some people agree with and others they do not. I have become a lot more mellow about the other guys opinion lately. I realize that we all have our own take on the team. There are a few who still think they should call people names and dis what ever take they might have. But opinions are like rear ends, everybody has one and they all stink. The facts are that this team, despite obvious short comings, a rash of injuries, and a totally new coaching staff has played far better than expected. The word GRIT comes to mind. They have displayed a lot of it. Yes, we all know they do not hit left handers all that well, but Bumgarner has not beaten them in over a year. We all dislike the platoon system, but since he sat down for 2 days 1 1/2 months ago, Gonzo has been the Gonzo of old. Not possible without someone to play in his place. Some of the platoon guys have played pretty well. Others have been lousy most of the year. Kike Hernandez has been a lost soul since early May. They sent Puig out to get his head in the right place, came within 20 minutes of trading him, and he has played his heart out since he came back. Kike should have been sent down 2 months ago. He is not that great in the OF, and his hitting has not been there. I think part of the problem with LH pitching has been the long absence of Scott Van Slyke. Scotty kills LH pitching. Losing Thompson hurt too. But they are in first place, 4 games up and 19 to go. 6 more with the Gnats, who they can really put in a hole next week when they are at Dodger Stadium for 3 HUGE games. The team we see is the team we have to live with. Making out a 25 man playoff roster is going to be a huge challenge for Dave and the FO. There are some holes, and there are some strengths. But one thing for sure, they need to be healthy and on a roll when they head into the playoffs.

    1. Michael
Agone has looked bad, in the last couple games, in his at bats.

Maybe Agones neck or back, has been bothering him a little right now, and he needs a day off.

Because he doesn’t look bad often, unless he is hurting.

I also think that Urias might be getting tired too.

He hasn’t looked as sharp lately, especially in his last two starts.

Before you could see improvement in each start he had.

This along with Mark saying Urias’s velocity is down, makes me think he is getting tired.

About our leftie hitters, Bochy use to platoon his young leftie hitters, but now they are playing and hitting better against lefties, so maybe next year, they should play the lefties, even against leftie pitchers, and see what happens.

And of course I agree with you Bobby, why play these part time players, that are not making a difference with there bats, and they are liabilities on defense.

      1. A-Gone had a 9 game hit streak. He was not looking bad, pitchers were being careful with him. He has always been a sucker for that low outside pitch and that is where Sabathia was pitching him. He is a veteran, he would let Roberts know if he was hurting because that would hurt the team. Ethier never has been good against lefties. We do not know how Joc would hit them because he sits most of the time. Early in his career Utley hit pretty much everybody. Even A-Gone has been successful. It changes year to year and no one really has an explanation for it. Last year Turner was pretty good against LH. This year, he is struggling. Kike hit both L and RH pitching last year, this year he couldn’t hit a bull in the butt with a bass fiddle. Reddick struggles against LH. For some reason it is team wide this year. Grandal has a higher average from the right side, but little power. So they do the platoon thing and hope for lightning in a bottle, and so far it has not worked. There will be adjustments this winter you can bet. If they decide to give up on Puig, the Braun trade will be revisited. There will be new blood in Dodgerland next year. On the field, and the mound. And for the first time in 67 years, no Vinny to tell us about it. I portend a large turnover on this roster this winter, with a few surprises mixed in.
