Wood and Bellinger Honored as Top NL Pitcher, Rookie in May

The ballots are in and the Dodgers stand atop the NL as having the top pitcher and rookie for the month of May. The Southpaw Assasin and future ROY helped lead the Dodgers out of the .500 doldrums and to the top of the NL West, and now they are being honored by all of baseball.

Alex Wood was lights out in May. He went 5-0 with a 1.27 ERA, 41 Ks and only 7 walks, with a 1.02 WHIP. Unfortunately, he’s currently on the Dodgers’ 10 day DL with joint inflammation, so the Dodgers Nation is waiting for more information on that.

Wood is also holding on to the Major League’s top consecutive innings scoreless streak at 25 1/3 innings.

Cody Bellinger‘s nubers were as impressive from the offensive side of the ball. He put up a line of .245/.315/.566 and an incredible .880 for May. He scored 22 runs and had 26 hits with 5 doubles, 1 triple and 9 home runs and 27 RBIs. He’s played both infield and outfield, recently making highlight worthy catches from left field.

Congratulations, boys! You earned it.

I was born in the shadow of Dodger Stadium and immediately drenched in Dodger Blue. Chavez Ravine is my baseball cathedral, Vin Scully was the golden voice of summer all my life, and Tommy Lasorda remains the greatest Dodgers manager ever. My favorite things are coffee, beer, and the Dodgers beating the Giants. I also blog about my baseball card hobby at All Trade Bait, All the Time.

  1. I was just reading about a new book that a writer wrote.

It is about the Dodgers and Reds rivalry, in the 70s.

It is called The Greatest Forgotten Rivalry in Baseball.

The author did interviews with both the Reds and the Dodgers players, and also actually interviewed fans, that remember the rivalry.

I do remember that the author talked about the 1973 season, but I don’t think it is only about that one season.

  2. Dammit.

I remember the rivalry. The Reds were in the West, and were very good. The giants for years sucked, so it was Dodgers v Reds. I remember one year, ’74, the Dodgers won 102 and the Reds won 98.

      1. That was back in the 50’s Big Klu was with the Sox in the 59 series. Cut the sleeves off his uni to show his guns. Had massive arms.

      2. Close. Kluszewski. And he was way before the 70’s.

Kershaw was great. He was also outpitched tonight.

    1. Badger

Any Dodger fan back then, hated the Reds, and really hated Pete Rose!

That is when I begin watching the Dodgers.

The Dodgers always gave the Reds a run for their money, or just beat them, and I often wonder why more Dodgers didn’t make the hall of fame, from that era.

The Reds had so many of their players make it.

  3. And there’s not a thing we can do about it. You send your best out to perform, the rest is up to them.

The Squirrel is really stepping up this year.

You might have to find a new name for him!

That looks like a pretty buff squirrel.

  4. Squirrel will have to prove it over a full year before he gets out of the nut house. He did that half season thing before, and last year he tailed off badly. He is doing what he did the first year. I give no second half swoon discounts.
