Is Yasiel Puig being Punished Harshly because of Racism?

Yasiel Puig was suspended for two games for his scuffle with the Giants’ Nick Hundley. At the same time, Miami Marlin Jose Urena was (in effect) only suspended one game for intentionally throwing at a batter. Some folks out there are seeing this through the lens of racism. Here’s my take:

I was born in the shadow of Dodger Stadium and immediately drenched in Dodger Blue. Chavez Ravine is my baseball cathedral, Vin Scully was the golden voice of summer all my life, and Tommy Lasorda remains the greatest Dodgers manager ever. My favorite things are coffee, beer, and the Dodgers beating the Giants. I also blog about my baseball card hobby at All Trade Bait, All the Time.

  1. Please correct me if I am wrong, but don’t they get docked their pay for the length of the suspension, not just the number of games missed? That would make it more expensive for Arena

  2. I’m still waiting for the Mexican mafia hit team to attack Dodger stadium, like so many fans were trying to convince me was a sure thing.

Let’s list his alleged trangressions: speeding on a florida highway, fighting in a night club.
    That’s it.

The rest is silly baseball stuff: showing up late , not hitting cutoff, failure to run out occasional fly balls, baserunning blunders, running over outfielders (all of which have improved)(except hitting the cutoff man, which could use some more improvement)

When you list reality, it seems kind of silly to crucify a mid twenties guy from another county for some pretty mundane stuff.

  3. Wow did I say or miss something entirely? All I said was the fines seemed to balance it out. Did the site get highjacked?

    1. You are correct in that daily pay is also affected by the suspension. So if two players earn the same salary the guy suspended for six days loses more cash than the guy suspended for two days. Puig earns around 7 mil per year. I don’t know what the Marlin pitcher earns.

  4. My comment:
Puig’s actions were comically stupid. He got what he deserved. Appeal or not, short term memory sets in and this will be all behind us come September. Hopefully he will learn and continue to mature.
