The Dodgers just completed a successful home-stand against the Giants and the Cubs taking two of three from both. So the letdown occurred yesterday against the Rockies in Coors, where the Dodgers were pounded 8-1. The Dodgers now lead the Giants by 1 1/2 games in the NL West. So today the Dodgers will look to rebound with Rich Hill on the mound, who will face off against Tyler Anderson.
Game time 540pm SNLA.
Before I get into the breakdown of today’s game. I have observed two troublesome trends going on with the Dodgers. The bullpen is getting worn out and offense is starting to have some lulls after being hot for so long. Yesterday ROY sensation Corey Seager was hit by pitch in yesterdays game.
X-rays negative on Dodgers rookie Corey Seager. He was hit by a pitch on the left wrist in the seventh inning. https://t.co/jBpsRlIg7F
— Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) August 30, 2016
So Corey Seager has a sore wrist and will probably not be in the lineup tonight. September call-ups are coming and I think that will help with the bullpen. The offense could get a boost with Yasiel Puig being called up or if they pull a stunner and trade him to the Brewers for Ryan Braun. The need a right handed bat to combat their issues with left-handed pitchers.
Rich Hill will be on the mound today. He had a successful debut in his first start against the “Hated Ones.” He threw his overhand curveball with great effectiveness. Today the altitude in Coors field will present a challenge. Hill this season on the road is 7-0 with a 1.41 ERA in 7 road starts with Oakland this season.
Hill has pitched in Coors before and is 0-2 with an 8.80 ERA in three starts their while he was with the Cubs in 2006, 2007, and 2008. So many moons ago. This season Hill is 10-3 with an 2.09 ERA. The Giants will be facing Greinke and the snakes tonight in the bay.
The Dodgers will face left-hander Tyler Anderson 4-5 3.69 ERA. With another lefthander on the mound against the Dodgers. You can expect a right handed lineup and no Corey Seager. I would expect runs to be at a premium. The Dodgers were hit a total of three times. Maybe their will be some retaliation.
This lineup will oppose Hill today:
8/30 @Rockies lineup vs LAD
Blackmon CF
LeMahieu 2B
Arenado 3B
Gonzalez RF
Hundley C
Dahl LF
Cardullo 1B
Adames SS
Anderson P— MLB Replays (@MLBReplays) August 30, 2016
Rich Hill faced the Rockies in Spring training when he was with the A’s. Hill got through four innings despite walking six and allowing five runs. The game was on March 15th. Mark Reynolds had a three run homer and Nolan Arenado had two hits. He a right handed lineup that day.
This is the Dodger lineup for today:
https://twitter.com/truebluela/status/770741772364283904?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw
In Anderson’s previous game against the Dodgers, he held them to two runs and six hits in seven innings Aug. 3 and was the winning pitcher in Colorado’s 12-2 romp. Anderson has great changeup and can strike out a lot of hitters.
This is how two of the Rockies hitters have fared against Hill in regular season action.
BATTER | AB | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | BB | SO | AVG | OBP | SLG | OPS |
Nick Hundley | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | .000 | .000 | .000 | .000 |
Mark Reynolds | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 1 | .000 | .250 | .000 | .250 |
Totals | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 1 | .000 | .250 | .000 | .250 |
This is how some of the Dodger lineup has fared against Anderson.
BATTER | AB | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | BB | SO | AVG | OBP | SLG | OPS |
Adrian Gonzalez | 3 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | .333 | .333 | .333 | .667 |
Enrique Hernandez | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | .000 | .333 | .000 | .333 |
Howie Kendrick | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | .000 | .000 | .000 | .000 |
Joc Pederson | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | .000 | .333 | .000 | .333 |
Carlos Ruiz | 4 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | .250 | .250 | .250 | .500 |
Corey Seager | 3 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | .333 | .333 | .333 | .667 |
Justin Turner | 3 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 2 | 0 | 0 | .667 | .667 | 1.667 | 2.333 |
Scott Van Slyke | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | .000 | .000 | .000 | .000 |
So no Gonzo, Pederson, Slyke, or Seager today. Hopefully it won’t be raining today. If it does rain I hope its raining some Dodger runs. Also this just in:
Puig claimed by unspecified team, per @JonHeyman. Again: Trade more likely in off-season when #Dodgers can deal with 29 clubs, not one.
— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) August 30, 2016
We will see what happens with this development. I feel either Puig comes back. Or the Dodgers trade for some prospects. Ryan Braun is still out there. Stay tuned. Go Dodgers.
Another interesting lineup for sure
At least Toles is playing
If you haven’t seen this ESPN interview with Puig, I think you will find it interesting.
http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/17422404/yasiel-puig-tries-make-best-triple-a
Rich Hill was brilliant in his Dodger debut. The AL knows all about him. He was spectacular for the A’s on the road but has been roughed up in Coors Field in the past. With a make shift lineup there will be little margin for error. After taking two of three from SF, the Dodgers can’t afford to monkey around with the likes of the Rocks. Win one for the Gipper (Corey) tonight!
Hernandez, since returning from the disabled list on July 31, is just 4-for-24 (.167) with a double and six walks (.333 OBP) against southpaws.
I know. Hence I’d rather Joc get some of these at bats now vs lefties.
Unless we’re really gona bench Joc in the playoffs every time a leftie is pitching??
They must think he’s a better option than Toles. I’m a Hernandez supporter but I don’t know about this.
Does that look like a 6 run lineup? A lot of second stringers there.
If it’s not the Braves then he just has to get past AZ, SD, and Cincy to get to the Brewers. Can tonight’s games re-shuffle the order or is it set. I think Milwaukee and those three teams are all within a game of each other.
Be funny if the Braves were the team, and Matt Kemp was the offer
Puig, Ethier, Kendrick, and Kazmir for Kemp. Just trying to move some salary back to Atlanta.
It’s already been reported that it isn’t the Braves or Marlins. Not that anyone thought it was the Marlins.
Wouldn’t it have to be a team in our division first?
It goes in reverse order of record. National League first and then if he clears all of the NL teams it goes in the same order through the AL teams.
Pedro Baez demoted to AA Tulsa, and Fein called up. Off to the hospital and off here for a while……
I bet they going to have Baez learn a couple new pitches.
MJ:
It goes in reverse order of the standings. What division the team is in doesn’t matter. It’s the NL first and if no team claims him, it then goes to the AL.
Hawkeyes
Thanks for answering my question!
The combo of Hill not being successful in Denver, and the line up without Agone and Cory , makes it look to me, that this game is another give away.
Just so we’re aware of how bad Reddick has been for us:
83ab, 12 hits, .145 avg, .202 obp, .157 slugging
he has ZERO rbi so far with us! Tomorrow is Aug 31. Has any regular ever been traded to a contender at the deadline, and not even driven in 1 run almost a month into it, all while playing fairly regularly? And batting 4th a lot of the time????
Dude needs to wake up today and crank one. I think once the monkey is off his back, he’ll get back on track.
Bobby
I thought you were going to say, will the Dodgers let Reddick go, once Ethier comes back.
No point in releasing him now, they can have 40 players on their roster after tomorrow. So if/when Ethier comes back, it won’t affect him, except maybe in playing time.
Wondering
I hope they finally stop playing him.
It was bad enough that the A’s made us take him, we don’t have to continue to play this guy, and make the trade even worse.
But if Roberts thinks the front office love this guy, he might be trying to do his best.
I think Hill is not the guy you want pitching at Coors. Big curveball is not so big – just fat!
… but with high humidity, he may stand a chance.
Mark
Since Hill throws curve balls as much as fastballs, I wonder how many of his curves actually hang when he pitches.
Followed by Stripling and his curve ball…
So do we just hope that Greinke beats the Giants tonight, and the Giants get sweeped?
Swept.
Wondering
I know my tenses but sometimes when I come back to fix something, I mess up.
It is really hard to correct things on a little iPhone.
Bum
That is why it was important to win the game that Maeda pitched.
He is our best pitcher, at Coors field.
Well, who knows when our game will start, so time to watch the Giants/Dbacks!
Bobby
I was looking at Reddick’s Babip and he only had a Babip at 300 once before in his career, besides the Babip he had with the A’s this year.
And both instances he only had about 250 at bats.
From Baseball Tonight on ESPN:
If Puig is not traded by the deadline, he will be brought up in September. However it may NOT be the 1st. FO thinking of keeping Puig in OKC until their season is over.
Also Baseball tonight has named Corey Seager the the BEST SS in the majors. A little love from the East Coast.
From MLBTR:
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports (via Twitter) that the White Sox attempted to claim Puig, but he did not make it to them on waivers. That would indicate that either a National League team or one of the few American League teams with a worse record than the ChiSox won the claim. Factoring in previous reports that the Marlins and Braves didn’t make the claim, the team that claimed Puig is one of the Angels, Athletics, Rays, Twins, Cubs, Nationals, Dodgers, Giants, Cardinals, Pirates, Mets, Rockies, Phillies, Brewers, Reds, Padres or D-backs.
I don’t think the Dodgers claimed him…
You go ’round and around it
You go over and under
I go through
You break my legs, then make me walk
You seal my lips and demand I talk
You blind my eyes, then ask me if I like what you drew?
Yeah, you do
You go ’round and around it
You go over and under
I go through
How about a little O.A.R. during the rain delay?
Rumor has it that the Red Sox put in the claim on Puig.
I would take Moncada even up! 😉
Well game is officially postponed.
Tomorrow we play at doubleheader at 12pm then 5pm
A day game! Like our chances unless tonight’s lineup is out there. Coors: just put the Rockies out of their misery and move the team.
Snider
That was funny.
But I do think the Rockies should have an inclosed there place.
It is tiring for the players, and the fans waiting for these games.
And they have to many of these rain outs.
If they inclosed this place, I wonder if they could control there enviroment better, and help there pitchers, with the elevation problem.
The Reds have had multiple chances to work deals with the Dodgers. This year’s trade deadline, the Chapman deal that fell apart, and the sequential Frazier 3-way. I don’t see them looking to add Puig now.
So, would AZ or SD claim him before he got to Milwaukee? AZ maybe to only block the Dodgers from getting a deal done. I can’t see SD looking to add him.
At least Greinke and Az beat the giants for us
Back to 2 games up
Greinke’s still the Giant killer.
Baez got sent down, finally. Fien back up. I like it.
Here is a good string of articles:
http://dodgerblue.com/phillies-aj-ellis-calls-justin-turner-heart-soul-dodgers/2016/08/30/?utm_source=Dodgers+Subscribers&utm_campaign=734017e022-The+DB+Report+04-2016&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_5603c26edc-734017e022-204389565
Good reads Bum.
“And I apologize for all the times that I did that with my previous manager Mattingly and now with Dave Roberts. I will show up early for you, but let me be Yasiel Puig, or advise me how you want me to play. But don’t take away the skills that I have, because then why should I play?”
Don’t take away the skills that I have? Or advise me how you want me to play? What? That doesn’t make any sense. What might he mean by these statements? I find it impossible to believe the Dodgers coaching staff isn’t “advising” him.
I think this is where the sports shrink may come in handy. It seems clear to me that there is a misunderstanding here. As a coach, all I see that I would change involve using his skill set more effectively. Hit your cutoff and pick up your base coaches when running the bases. In the box, have a plan and work it. And don’t swing at pitches out of the strike zone. Do THOSE things everyday, show up on time and have fun. I like the Wild Horse play. It’s the horses ass play I have a problem with. Be a professional and you will not only have more fun, you will win and make a lot of money doing it. When that happens, EVERYBODY is happy.
He reminds me of someone who keeps tweeting in spite of what his advisers tell him or the grief it causes him.
Badger
If Puig can’t play for Roberts he has problems.
I saw comments by a few Hispanic commentors, and they said what Puig said to the press, wasnt being humble, he was being more bothered because he is having to go through this.
There has to be somebody who can get through to him. I’m not sure how hard the Dodgers are trying. Maybe they’ve done all they can, or maybe they’ve done all they are willing to do. He’s a 5 tool talent and he’s ours. Since I don’t know what is going on behind closed doors I don’t know what they are saying to him, but if how management handled the Ellis situation is any indication, and I suspect it is, then I don’t think it’s a stretch to believe they are f’n this up as badly as they did in the moving of AJ. And I know saying that opens me up for more FAZ o wrath, but I can take it. I seek only solutions to problems, and Yasiel Puig is a problem.
Cubs Hendricks, he of a 2.09 era, has a fastball whose average speed is 87 mph.
Bum
That is why I think Maeda will get better, the more he knows the league.
As he approaches 150+ innings on shorter rest than he’s had as a professional I grow increasingly concerned. The best projections had him at about 165-170 IP. I had him at about 165, which at 5 innings per outing is 4 more starts. Hope I’m wrong about that.
Rizzo, Bonds, Seager all choke(d) up on the bat. Why wouldn’t everybody?
Bum
It is just stubbornness.
At least do it with 2 strikes.
Nope. Not these guys.
I was reading MLB Trade and it was odd, because in two of there different threads they said that Kazmir isn’t hurt.
One said unlike Kazmir’s injured team mates, Kazmir is close to coming back.
And in another thread, it just said he wasn’t hurt.
I thought it was odd, that we haven’t heard any specific injury, when it came to Kazmir, and McCarthy.
Usually they are pretty specific about injuries.
I thought I heard his neck was stiff and that was messing with his mechanics which supposedly has been put back to normal.
I like this Vin story:
http://www.dodgersnation.com/stories-by-scully-vin-scully-meets-the-pope/2016/08/30/?utm_source=DNVersion1&utm_campaign=6fc153206a-RSS_EMAIL_CAMPAIGN&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bc32bd168c-6fc153206a-15564917
Bum
I heard that but there was no specific injury reported.
Don’t you think they took a scan?
I’m sure players and pitchers,
have little aches and pains, here and there, but they don’t go out on the DL.
You are not going to like the line up today.
I personally don’t like this line up, so hopefully we win.
Grienke wasn’t Grienke-good last night. But good enough. How many games does he have against us down the stretch? I hope none.
One I heard he is pitching Monday at Dodger stadium
Dbacks have looked better of late. And we know much everybody in the West loves to beat the Dodgers. All those September dates are circled on their calendars.
Yes, The Greinke non-signing by FAZ paid dividends last night.
Congrats Zack, on lowering your ERA to 4.17.
12 wins on a team that has had a lot of trouble winning. The team has won 15 of his 22 starts. In August he’s gone at least 6 in four of his five starts. Without looking it’s probably safe to say we don’t have anyone who does that.
Maybe, but, AZ is paying for his 222.2 IP of 1.66 ERA baseball (2015 stats), instead of his 136 IP of 4.17 ERA baseball (2016 stats). Sadly for AZ, they will be paying for those 2015 stats for another 5 long years.
I see your point.
Sounds like you are more concerned about the money. I just want more better pitchers. I couldn’t care less about the money. What’s a few million among billionaires?
