When the Dodgers were down 5-0 I had resigned myself to accepting that the Dodgers were going to lose. That the series was going back to Dodger Stadium for game 6 and that we would all be pissed off on Halloween. Thankfully the Dodgers had other plans and decided they had enough. They were not going back home to play a game 6, they were going back home for a parade and to celebrate. The Dodgers rallied back from a 5-run deficit to score 5 unearned runs in the top of the fifth and then score another two in the top of the eighth (after being down 6-5) to defeat the Yankees 7-6 in game 5 of the World Series and win the World Series Championship. Freddie Freeman was named World Series MVP. Well deserved.
They had a little help from the Yankees piss poor defense. The Yankees unraveled in the top of the fifth with two crucial errors and a mental error when starting pitcher Gerrit Cole forgot to cover first base on a grounder to first from Mookie Betts. The list of New York defensive miscues included three errors, mental error from Cole, a balk, a catcher’s interference and a partridge in a pair tree. But before that, the Yankees were giving us nightmares. Jack Flaherty lasted only 1.1 innings giving up three runs in the bottom of the first and another run in the bottom of the second. Aaron Judge hit a two-run home run followed by Jazz Chisholm Jr. hitting a home run as well in that ugly frame. Before we knew it, it was 5-0 Yankees. The Bombers hit four home runs in the first three innings.

On the other side, Cole was cruising through the first four innings. The Dodgers did not have a hit until that fateful fifth inning. It looked like we were screwed. And then the Yankees shat all over themselves, and the Dodgers had one clutch at-bat after another. It all started with an Enrique Hernandez single. Tommy Edman’s fly ball to center clanked off of Judge’s glove (HA!) for an error. The first of many for the Yankees tonight. Will Smith’s grounder to short should have been at least one out, but Anthony Volpe’s throw to third to get the lead runner was off and everyone was safe. The Dodgers now had the bases loaded. After Gavin Lux and Shohei Ohtani struck out, Mookie’s slow grounder to first should have been the third out, but there was nobody covering first base. Anthony Rizzo was too far off the bag when fielding and Cole forgot to cover the bag. A run scored and it was 5-1.

The inning continued. Freddie Freeman (the 2024 World Series MVP) dumped a single to center to score two and the Dodgers cut the lead to 5-3. Teoscar Hernandez’s double off the wall in left center scored two more runs to tie the game at 5-5. The Yankees actually loaded the bases in the bottom half of the fifth but Alex Vesia got Gleyber Torres to fly out to keep them off the board.
But the Yankees would retake the lead in the bottom of the sixth off of Brusdar Graterol. That happened when Aaron Judge and Juan Soto walked, and Giancarlo Stanton’s sacrifice fly put the Yankees ahead by a 6-5 score. We all waited.

Then came the top of the eighth. With the Yankees still up by a run, the Dodgers would once again rally to score two and take the lead for good. It all started again with a Kike single off of Tommy Khanle. Edman’s broken-bat ground ball single to the hole at short put two on with none out. Will Smith worked a walk to load the bases. New York manager Aaron Boone brought in Luke Weaver and the Yankees were flustered. Lux’s Sacrifice fly to center scored Hernandez to tie the game at 6-6. The Yankees defensive boners continued when Shohei Ohtani was awarded first base on a catcher’s interference call. Then Mookie Betts’ sacrifice fly to center scored the go ahead run, and the Dodgers were back on top 7-6. But the job was not done yet.
In the bottom of the eighth with one out, Blake Treinen gives up a double to Judge. Then Chisholm walked and Treinen had to really dig deep to retire Stanton on a fly ball to right. He then struck out Anthony Rizzo and the Dodgers were just three outs away from a championship.

Move to the bottom of the ninth. The Dodgers bring in Walker Buehler, who like Treinen has balls of steel. Volpe ground out to third. One out. Catcher Austin Wells strikes out. Two outs. Former Dodger and now idiot, Alex Verdugo whiffs to end the series. THE LOS ANGELES DODGERS ARE WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS!!!!
And all is right with the world. I’ll have more later, but I’m tired and want to celebrate. Thank you Dodgers, this is an incredibly special moment for all of Los Angeles and Dodgers fans around the world. The Dodgers have won the World Series, and thank goodness they saw it in Los Angeles. I have tears in my eyes!
