This is Commissioner Manfred’s “Mountain” Landis Moment

100 years ago, “Mountain” Landis banned the Black Sox for life when they cheated in the World Series. This is MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred’s once-in-a-lifetime moment. He holds the power to be just as puntative on the Cheating Astros. Will he be a “Mountain” or a molehill?

I was born in the shadow of Dodger Stadium and immediately drenched in Dodger Blue. Chavez Ravine is my baseball cathedral, Vin Scully was the golden voice of summer all my life, and Tommy Lasorda remains the greatest Dodgers manager ever. My favorite things are coffee, beer, and the Dodgers beating the Giants. I also blog about my baseball card hobby at All Trade Bait, All the Time.

  1. He’ll try to split the difference between “Mountain” and “Molehill” and he’ll satisfy no one, not to mention not properly deal with the issue.

When he does what feels like little to nothing to most fans he will DIRECTLY be causing even more fans to be cynics about MLB and have they’ll have cause to be fans even less.

    Vacate the championship
Take away all post season bonuses
Especially take away the only thing player’s money can’t buy – The rings!
Ban Astros from 2020 post season play and place them on 5 years probation
Remove all draft picks for 2020 with further removals in the event of any future cheating.
Require they issue a formal written apology to fans signed by all players and management.

  2. More like “everybody say you’re sorry and that you’ll never do it again”

Baseball doesn’t want to discipline anyone. Fans are stupid, they’ll get over it.

    1. They could make it really hurt and ban all Gatorade towels from being hung up in the dugout. That will show us all how serious the MLB is, dammit!

  3. Manfred is no Landis. Landis was granted total power by the owners, that was the only way he would take the job. At least one owner was really sorry he took it. Cominskey. There will be fines, and there might even be a couple of suspensions, or bans. But it won’t be the players who get fined, no way with the new CBA getting re-negotiated here soon. The Stros will keep their title and their rings. I definitely think there will be a couple of heads offered up for sacrifice.

  4. No way they vacate the Championship; this isn’t college football. Maybe just give us Yordan Alvarez back?

BTW, Kenasaw Mountain Landis was his full name…no quotation required.

    1. There will probably be some fines. A couple of guys might even get suspensions. But they are not taking anything away from the Stros unless they make them give up slot money or picks. Manfred does not have the same power that Landis had.

  5. New report on ESPN say’s that Manfred has stated that the penalties could be severe. Now what his definition of severe is, we will have to wait and see. But so far, the only team under investigation is the Stros.

  6. Grandal signs with the White Sox. 4 years 73 million. Works out to a little over 18 mil a year. Giants have a new guy in charge. Majority owners kid. MLB.com has an article about 5 trades that make sense. They have Betts coming to LA with no extension guarantee for Pederson, May and Ruiz. I do not make that deal.
