Dodgers Look To Declare Their Independence From The NL West on Independence Day

Dodgers vs. Snakes

Do you know the Dodgers hadn’t had an off-day in nearly three weeks? That’s 20 games in the last 20 days. So after a much needed day of rest on Monday for the boys in blue they return home tonight on Independence day to begin a six game home stand that will lead us up to the all-star break. They begin the stand with a huge three game set against the second place Dbacks. Clayton Kershaw will open the series against fellow southpaw Patrick Corbin.

The Dodgers did not have a happy flight home as they dropped the series finale to the Padres after Kenta Maeda was horrible and the Dodgers left way too many runners on base. Yet they still won two of three and still hold a 2.5 game lead over Arizona in the NL West. The Dodgers have a 55-29 record and the Dbacks have a 52-31 record. The Dodgers have the best home record (33-11) in baseball and the Dbacks are 20-18 on the road.

Corbin has not walked more than three batters in any start this season and has just 26 in 90.2 innings of work in 2017. However he’s allowed over 11 hits per nine innings and posted a 4.76 ERA in 16 starts. Corbin is 6-7 and has 78 strikeouts to go along with a 1.5 WHIP. The Dodgers defeated Corbin back on April 15 as he allowed three earned runs. Overall Corbin is 3-8 with a 4.34 ERA in 13 career starts against the Dodgers. He’s pitched better at Dodger Stadium, posting a 2-3 record and a 3.69 ERA in 7 career starts at Chavez Ravine.

The Dodgers have put up very good numbers against Corbin. Future all-star Justin Turner is batting .389 against him. Check out the rest of the numbers below.

Kershaw is undefeated in his last 11 decisions. He hasn’t lost since May 1 against the Giants and was 5-0 in the month of June. He manhandled the Angels with seven shutout frames and 12 strikeouts in his last start. Kershaw leads the National league with 12 wins, (12-2) record and he has a 2.32 ERA in 17 starts. Kershaw is 77-30 at Dodger Stadium with a 2.04 ERA. You could say that Kershaw pitching at home is normally a safe bet to win every time out. Kershaw is 13-8 with a 2.66 ERA in 25 career starts against the Snakes.

Paul Goldschmidt– The all-star first baseman has a .991 career OPS at Dodger Stadium and is batting .330 with 14 home runs at Chavez Ravine. He is also hitting .313 against the Dodgers with 25 home runs. I really despise this guy.

The pitching match-ups for the rest of the series will see big right hander Zack Godley counter Alex Wood in the second game. In the series finale Robbie Ray will take on Rich Hill.

Don’t forget to vote for Justin Turner in the finale vote. As of now he seems to be in the lead. Let’s get JT to the all-star game! He certainly is very deserving.

In other news Kenley Jansen was named National league reliever of the month and Cody Bellinger was named National League rookie of the month…… No surprise there for either player. Kenley good. Bellinger good.

Don’t forget to check out the newest LADR video recap as Oscar drinks more beer. I’ll be on the next one with him, although I may not be able to drink as much beer as him. I promise to try.

Happy Independence Day everyone!

  1. Big series. It’s a test to see whether our offense or their pitching will start to regress first.

  2. Nice article in LA Times about Morrow’s resurgence. I am a bit concerned with a Morrow-Baez-Jansen bullpen lineup as they are all power strikeout pitchers but maybe it will work.

Dayton quietly had a good June. I think he’ll be there at the end.

      Your concerns are not unfounded.

And Morrow proved your point last night.

Like you, I still don’t trust our set up pitchers.

Baez can get a little shakey at times, like he did against the Reds.

And he hasn’t been very good, at coming into a game, with runners on base, in the last three or four years.

But he has been better this year.

And you never know how a pitcher will perform in the post season, that hasn’t been before, so I think your concerns are right on.
